Oil production now 1.7 million barrels daily, says FG

The Federal Government, on Friday, announced that Nigeria’s oil production has increased to about 1.7 million barrels per day, up from the 1.1mbpd recorded in August 2023. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, disclosed this in a session with journalists at his office in Abuja on Friday. He said, “We have a sole agenda and it is to increase crude oil production. Once you increase production there will be more revenue for Nigeria and that is the recipe to virtually all the problems we have in this country. You know that Nigeria is very dependent on oil, even our budget is always predicated on how many barrels of oil we produce. Although the non-oil sector is thriving, for us to solve our problems we need to earn enough forex. “And substantial part of our forex comes from the oil sector. So my ambition is to see how I can lead the sector to increase production and how we can get more revenue to be able to fund strategic national projects. “We are already increasing production steadily. As at August it was about 1.1mbpd, but as at today it has increased to between 1.3 and 1.4mbpd exclusive of condensates, if you include condensates it will be about 1.7mbpd.”

Our National Secretary’s Office isn’t vacant – PDP Source

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has not declared the office of National Secretary, currently occupied by the its Imo State Governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu vacant, a party source has said. According to the source who pleaded anonymity; because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the media, the clarification became necessary in order to dispel speculations that the PDP National Working Committee, NWC, was looking for his replacement.   Vanguard gathered in Abuja, on Friday, that Anyanwu , popularly known as “Sam Daddy“ among his supporters, has continued to play his role as Party scribe even while still holding the party’s governorship ticket. The party source said, “Contrary to speculations in some quarters, the PDP NWC has not demanded for the resignation of the Head of our Secretariat. So, the issue of looking for a replacement hasn’t arisen. “His campaign has not affected the performance of his official duties. Besides, he has not breached any law by remaining in office as our National Secretary.” A member of the NWC, who also pleaded anonymity, further explained that, “the NWC has since considered all issues and noted that Senator Anyanwu, hasn’t violated any section of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act, 2022, or the INEC and PDP Guidelines by retaining his party position. “Relinquishing that office however becomes mandatory when he wins the election and is sworn in as governor.” The Party official equally noted that the requirement for resignation as contained in the Electoral Act, does not apply to those holding elected offices. This, he said, “Explains why elected persons, such as: “The President, State Governors, National and State Assembly members contest elections while retaining their elected offices adding that such is also applicable to elected Party officials. “There is no portion in the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act and the current PDP Guideline that provides that an elected Party official should resign before contesting election at any level. “That is why no Party official had been barred from contesting election while holding Party elective position. “So, the NWC never met to ask that Senator Anyanwu should resign or be replaced as National Secretary. “The NWC has no contemplation in that regard and there are no issues whatsoever to warrant such, especially as the Secretariat is running smoothly and effectively.” “Our party and all of its organs are currently more focused on ensuring victory in the November 11, 2023 Governorship elections in Imo, Bayelsa and Kogi State and this is what should be of interest to any genuine Party member. “What is paramount to us in the PDP is to win the November 11, 2023 Governorship election and make Imo State safe and prosperous again. “The PDP is standing very strong in Imo State, we have a very popular candidate in Sen. Samuel Anyanwu who is also the National Secretary of the PDP. “His mission to Make Imo Safe Again is resonating across the State and an overwhelming majority of the people of Imo State are rallying with him to achieve this.”

Israel’ll not stop fighting until Hamas loses military potential – Foreign ministry

Israel will not stop fighting until the Palestinian Hamas movement will no longer have any military potential, Foreign Ministry spokesman Walid Abu Haya told Sputnik on Friday. “We will see the end of this war once Hamas loses its military potential,” the spokesman said. In recent years, Hamas has refused to accept the Middle East Qaurtet’s terms on settlement, including recognition of agreements between the Palestinians and Israel, preventing the organization from becoming a political party, Abu Haya added. The spokesman also said that there is no difference between Hamas and the Islamic State terrorist group (banned in Russia) as their goal is to “exterminate the Jewish people.”

Police impound 10 vehicles over “one chance” activities in FCT

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) says it has impounded 10 vehicles suspected to have been used for “one chance” activities in the territory. The Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the FCT, Mr Haruna Garba, said this at a media briefing on Friday in Abuja. He said the vehicles were impounded by the newly created ‘Anti-One Chance Squad’ of the command to curb the menace of “one chance” activities within the FCT. According to him, most of the vehicles impounded had tinted glasses on them and during searches, axes, cutlasses and knives, ostensibly for use in carrying out their criminal activities were recovered from the vehicles. He said the three suspects who arrested in connection with the seizure of the vehicles were currently under investigation. Garba said that operatives of the command from Zuba Division, on Oct. 8, arrested three suspects over alleged armed robbery and kidnapping. He said the suspects were arrested following a distress call about some strange and suspicious movements around the Zuba Fruit Market. “Police operatives from Zuba Division swiftly mobilised to the scene and arrested a suspect, who upon sighting the police operatives took to his heels. “He was given a hot chase and apprehended by police operatives. “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of a 5-man gang and later led the police operatives to the arrest of two of his gang members. “Two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and 35 rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the houses of the suspects. “The suspects are cooperating with police authority to arrest the rest of the gang members,” he said. The CP said 62 cases of alleged disappearance of male organs had been reported in the FCT since the first case was reported in Gwagwalada on Sept. 21. Garba said 51 suspects had been charged to court for giving false information and inciting public disturbance in connection to male organ disappearance. “To this end, I want to reiterate my commitment and willingness to always work with FCT residents to defeat crime in all its forms in the territory,” he said. Thousands Flee North Gaza After Israel Evacuation Warning

Thousands of Palestinians fled to southern Gaza in search of refuge Friday after Israel warned them to evacuate before an expected ground offensive against Hamas in retaliation for the deadliest attack in Israel’s history. The call to get out came six days after Hamas gunmen burst through the heavily militarised border around the Gaza Strip and killed more than 1,300 people — most of them civilians — in an attack compared to 9/11 in the United States. Nearly 1,800 Gazans — again most of them civilians and including over 580 children — have been killed in waves of missile strikes on the densely populated enclave, the health ministry said. Hamas, proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the United States and Europe, took an estimated 150 Israeli, foreign and dual-national hostages back to Gaza during its initial attack, according to Israel. The militant group on Friday said 13 of them had been killed in Israeli air strikes. It has previously said four hostages died in bombardments, complicating any Israeli ground offensive. Germany Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, visiting Jerusalem on Friday, said Hamas was using residents as a “shield”. Tensions meanwhile rose across the Middle East and beyond, with protests in support of the Palestinians, while Israel faced the threat of a separate confrontation with Hezbollah in Lebanon. In the occupied West Bank, at least nine Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire during protests supporting Gaza, taking the toll there to 44 since Saturday, the health ministry said. ‘Impossible’ In Gaza, UN officials said the Israeli military, whose troops are massing at the border, had told them the evacuation should be carried out “within the next 24 hours”. It later admitted it would take more time, however, and did not confirm it had set the deadline. But the United Nations described the immediate movement of some 1.1 million people — nearly half of the 2.4 million in the Gaza Strip — “impossible”. It urgently appealed for the order to be rescinded. Aid agencies have warned mass evacuations would stretch support to the limit, as fuel, food and water dwindled due to an Israeli blockade. Hospitals are struggling to cope with the dead and wounded from the relentless bombardment, and the health system was already “at a breaking point”, the World Health Organization said. Ashraf al-Qudra, from the Gaza health ministry, said hospitals were “starting to lose capacity” and medicine was running out. In Jordan, after a meeting with visiting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, King Abdullah II called for “humanitarian corridors” to be opened urgently. Elizabeth El-Nakla, the mother-in-law of Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf, said in a video from Gaza that he posted online that people had nowhere to go. “One million people no food no water, and still they are bombing them as they leave. Where are we going to put them?” she said. “This will be my last video. Everybody from Gaza is moving towards where we are,” added Nakla, who was visiting relatives in Gaza from Scotland. “May God help us.” Hostages AFP correspondents in Gaza said the Israeli military on Friday dropped flyers warning residents to flee “immediately” south of Wadi Gaza, with a map pointing south across a line in the centre of the 40 kilometre-long (25 miles) territory. The army said it “will continue to operate significantly in Gaza City and make extensive efforts to avoid harming civilians”. “Hamas terrorists are hiding in Gaza City inside tunnels underneath houses and inside buildings populated with innocent civilians.” AFP correspondents said there were “heavy strikes” in the northern Gaza Strip on Friday morning, including Al-Shati refugee camp and Gaza City, primarily targeting residential buildings. The Hamas media office reported Israeli air raids on Khan Yunis and Rafah in the south. Israel’s army said its “fighter jets struck 750 military targets in the northern Gaza Strip overnight” including “residences of senior terrorist operatives used as military command centres”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to “crush” Hamas, and has likened the group to the so-called Islamic State. A ‘crime’ Hamas has said Palestinians rejected the evacuation request yet thousands of Gazans were on the move in search of safety, carrying plastic bags of belongings, suitcases on their shoulders and children in their arms. Some walked while others drove, with belongings strapped to the roofs of their trucks, cars and carts pulled by donkeys. More than 423,000 people have already fled their homes in the territory of 2.4 million, according to the UN, which said the evacuation order could turn “already a tragedy into a calamitous situation”. Gaza has been under a land, air and sea blockade since 2006 and Israel has vowed not to turn back on water, food and power supplies until all hostages are freed. Norway’s Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt condemned the siege while Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit said Israel’s evacuation order is a “forced transfer” that constitutes “a crime”. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said it will be “tantamount to a second Nakba” or “catastrophe”, referring to the 760,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes during the 1948 war that coincided with Israel’s creation. Palestinian prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza. Hamas has threatened to kill captives if Israel bombs civilian targets without advance warning. Military build-up Israel has called up 300,000 reservists while forces, tanks and heavy weapons have been moved to the southern desert area around Gaza, an AFP correspondent reported. In fields along the border, artillery fires like clockwork with a deafening noise every 30 seconds towards barely visible targets in Gaza, shaking the earth. Israeli soldiers have swept the southern towns and kibbutz farming communities since Saturday. They said they found the bodies of 1,500 militants, as well as large numbers of civilians killed by Hamas fighters. Yossi Landau, who has 33 years’ volunteer experience with Zaka, which recovers the bodies of people who suffered unnatural deaths, said in Beeri, just north of Gaza, he found a dead

Stop passing bills without our input, Senator Ndume, others, knock Akpabio

The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has slammed the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for approving the passage of some executive bills without seeking the input of other members. In a video from Thursday’s sitting, Ndume knocked the Senate President for passing certain bills without formal reading and members’ contributions. The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has slammed the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for approving the passage of some executive bills without seeking the input of other members. The Peoples Democratic Party’s Senator Ogoshi Onawo, representing Nasarawa State, also condemnes Akpabio’s quest to pass some bills hastily. “Very sensitive bills are brought and are expected to be passed with the speed of light, which is not good for the country. “Every senator here is supposed to be adequately informed; he does his research and makes a positive contribution, but in a situation where even money bills are brought and expected to be passed within two hours, it wouldn’t be better for the country.   He said: “Sir, you are on the seat today; history will judge you that things like this are not good for this country.”   Responding to Onawo’s comment, Akpabio stated, “If the bills we pass are good for the country, history will judge me right. I don’t think we would come here to pass a bill that’s not good for the interest of Nigerians. So, your point of order is noted.”
