DSS Says Their Operatives Arrested Suspended UNICAL Law Dean

The Department of State Services (DSS), says its operatives arrested the erstwhile Dean of Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Professor Cyril Ndifon. The DSS director of public relations and strategic communications, Dr Peter Afunanya, who confirmed this to journalists in Abuja, said Ndifon was arrested on the request of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes Commission (ICPC), after he repeatedly declined to honour their invitation in the widely reported sex scandal case involving him and some law students. He also said Ndifon was arrested in Calabar, Cross River State by its operatives on 4th October, 2023 based on a court order. Afunanya said, “The ICPC has sought the collaboration of the Department of State Services (DSS), on the University of Calabar (UNICAL) sex scandal matter involving Professor Cyril Ndifon, the erstwhile Dean of Faculty of Law of the Institution. “The commission had disclosed the refusal of Ndifon to honour its several invitations thus his eventual arrest in Calabar, Cross River State by its operatives on 4th October, 2023 based on a court order. “However, the Service, following the commission’s request and in the spirit of interagency cooperation, supported it for a successful operation.” The secret police said the clarification “is to guide public understanding of the latest developments on the matter.” Recall that the sex scandal rocking the University of Calabar took on a legal dimension as Ndifon instituted a suit against the vice chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, and other officers at the National Industrial Court in Calabar, the Cross River State capital recently. But the university’s management has told the accused law professor that they would meet in court. The law professor, who is now on suspension, said he dragged the VC and others to court to seek redress and clear his name from the smear campaign, accusing the VC of sponsoring the protest simply because she wanted him out of his position as dean and in academia. Also joined in the suit with the VC is the university’s registrar, Prof. Dorathy Oluwagbemi-Jacob, for herself and on behalf of members of the panel investigating alleged misconduct brought against him. In the Suit No. NICN/CA/42/2023 between Prof. Cyril Ndifon (the claimant), the vice chancellor, University of Calabar, and three others as defendants, Ndifon expressed displeasure over what he described as dragging his image into the mud even when he did nothing wrong.

I consoled them that I will be applying for the court bail of their brother. “As we stepped outside moving towards the small gate leading to their Mammy market where I packed my car, the suspect’s Uncle said ” Barrister that Red deflected Highlander Jeep belongs to the suspect and was also impounded by the Police”. I told them not to worry that I will include it in the bail application. At that juncture I told my secretary to help me snap the plate number of the suspect’s jeep which she did with her phone. One of the police men named “Bishop” call my attention on interrogatory. [Full text] Atiku’s speech at press conference on Tinubu’s CSU record saga

Being text of a press conference by His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), Waziri Adamawa, Vice President of Nigeria (1999-2007) and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (2023), at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre on the 5th of October 2023. Protocol Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I consider it important to address and report to you today on issues that define the future of elective government and legitimate leadership in our country.   Political leadership and active citizenship matter because they are ways through which we all work together to build a country that works for all who live in it. Our country is bigger than any of us, and its standing in the world affects the fate of all who come from or live in it. As leaders, it is our duty to advance the well-being of all our people and of the country. For this purpose, my generation worked hard to return the soldiers to the barracks and to defend the right of the people to elect and establish for ourselves a legitimate government. Our elections are established and governed by law and founded on the constitution from which leadership and government in Nigeria alone derive their legitimacy. The people look up to us as leaders to respect these rules and, where necessary, to defend them. This is what brings us here. Today, we are called upon again as a people to uphold and defend the ground rules of elective government in our country. The constitution prescribes the requirements for those who seek the highest elective office in the land. It should not take months or, indeed, decades, for the institutions concerned to be able to do their work in establishing the credibility of any certificates presented by candidates for public office. We undertook this journey at great cost and for important reasons. The ground rules for legitimate governance in our country need to be upheld, and the reputation of our country is at stake. That affects everyone, Nigerians everywhere. I am a democrat by conviction and a citizen of a country that I love. The issues at stake in this case require us once more to re-dedicate ourselves to both the country and our constitution. Now, we entrust these facts to us all as citizens and as leaders of the institutions charged with interpreting our constitution. I should thank the lawyers both in Nigeria and in the United States, who have assisted us in bringing clarity and definitive answers to these issues that appear to have defied our institutions for nearly a quarter of a century. I also want to extend my gratitude to Nigerian citizens and friends of Nigeria both within and beyond the shores of our country for their patience as we have sought to find the facts and establish the truth. Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it. Former American President Thomas Jefferson once said, “If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the latter”. From exposing the Watergate scandal and unravelling the dubious certificates of politicians, journalists have maintained eternal vigilance by bridging the gap and stepping in when other arms of government failed. It is for these reasons that commendation must be given to David Hundeyin, an independent journalist whose extraordinary work and those of many more young people like him has become a source of inspiration. Special thanks must be given to the millions of Nigerian youths and citizen journalists too who continue to put out the truth online even when no one is listening. Indeed, the price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance. They have put the country first in their firm commitment to unravel the truth and hold leaders accountable. This gives me the hope that we have worthy partners in the struggle to reclaim the country we call home. This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar. It is a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, and accountability in our public affairs. In line with this, therefore, I am calling on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, our religious leaders, our traditional leaders, our community leaders, our political leaders, and in particular, Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP and, the leaders of every political party in Nigeria, and, indeed, every single person who loves this country, as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for the country, as I do, to join me in this campaign to enshrine probity, accountability and the basic principles of justice, morality and uprightness in our country and in our government. This is a task for each and every one of us. Thank you for listening. May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Certificate Controversy: Four Things CSU Documents Show About Tinubu – Atiku’s Lawyer

Kalu Kalu, the lawyer to Atiku Abubakar, says President Bola Tinubu’s academic documents released by the Chicago State University (CSU) indicated many things about the Nigerian leader.   He spoke on Thursday during a press conference held by his principal, the presidential candidate of the PDP in the 2023 election, in Abuja. Atiku had asked CSU to release the documents over suspicions that Tinubu forged his credentials from the schoool. During the event, Kalu claimed the documents that were handed over to Atiku’s team showed several things about Tinubu as captured below: 1. Forged Certificate? He claimed that “Bola Ahmed Tinubu forged the certificate he presented to INEC” ahead of the February 2023 polls. 2. Female Name Apart from that, Kalu said the document showed that Tinubu’s “qualifying certificate from South West College to Chicago State University bears a female name. This, he noted, showed that that “(qualifying) document does not belong” to Tinubu. 3. Tinubu’s High School Graduation Date Not just that. Atiku’s lawyer also said the documents from CSU showed that “Tinubu attended Government College Lagos and graduated in 1970 when indeed the school was established in 1974. 4. Identity Crisis Lastly, he told the gathering that the CSU document showed a “black American” owner and that “(in) the document Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted to INEC, he (Tinubu) denied having dual citizenship which means it does not belong to him. Then, the same document, oral deposition, said the A in Bola A Tinubu is Ahmed but the NYSC certificate Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted to INEC has Adekunle. I don’t know where Adekunle emerged from,” Kalu argued.

Tinubu’s academic records: Nigeria’s reputation at stake, says Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday said Nigeria’s reputation is at stake with the controversy surrounding the Chicago State University’s certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission by President Bola Tinubu. This is as he also urged the relevant stakeholders to uphold the tenets of democracy by establishing the truth about the certificate submitted to the electoral umpire by the President. “The reputation of our country is at stake and that affects Nigerians everywhere and wherever they may be,” Atiku, who was Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, said while briefing journalists in Abuja. Atiku, however, urged the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso respectively to join him in fighting for justice for the country. This quest is not for or about Atiku Abubakar; it’s a quest for the enthronement of truth, morality, justice, and accountability in our public affairs. “In line with this, let me call on all well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, religious, traditional, community, and political leaders. “In particular, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso of NNPP, leaders of political parties in Nigeria, and every single person who loves this country as I do, and who wishes nothing but the best for this country to join me in this campaign to enshrine accountability, and the basic principles of justice, morality, and uprightness in our country and in our government,” Atiku said. The former vice president also vowed to pursue his petition before the Supreme Court to a logical conclusion. “I will only drop the case when the court rules on it. If the court says I am right, fine. If it says he (President Tinubu) is right, fine,” he said. The PUNCH reports that the university released the academic records of the President on Monday and the CSU Registrar, Carl Westberg, also carried out a deposition of the documents on Tuesday, in compliance with the ruling of Magistrate Jeffrey Gilbert. Gilbert had on September 19 granted Atiku’s request for the release of Tinubu’s academic records but the President filed a review of the order. Tinubu’s lawyers insisted that the documents would not be relevant in Atiku’s appeal against Tinubu at the Supreme Court and asked for a review of the ruling. However, federal judge Nancy Maldonado overruled Tinubu’s objections and ordered the CSU to release the President’s academic records. In the CSU documents, the institution responded to Atiku’s four requests and affirmed that Tinubu attended the CSU Meanwhile, the Presidency on Wednesday insisted that the academic records released by the varsity had vindicated the President and confirmed him as an alumnus of the school. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Affairs, Temitope Ajayi, also submitted that the CSU never said the certificate presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission before the presidential election by Tinubu was forged in its deposition. Having obtained Tinubu’s academic records on the order of an Illinois, Chicago court, Atiku would on Thursday (today) file his application at the Supreme Court. Atiku, who contested against Tinubu in the February presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, is expected to file the documents he obtained from the CSU in furtherance of his election appeal at the Supreme Court.
