So This Happened (239) | Punch0.00 / 0.00 3 Those said to be missing are Inspector Onoja Daniel, Inspector Onogho Felix, Inspector Emmanuel Okoroafor, Inspector Joel Hamidu, Sergeant Moses Eduvie, and Sergeant Cyril Okorie (SWAT). “The Nigeria Police Force is profoundly saddened by the devastating loss of the courageous officers in Delta State, who exhibited exceptional valour in the face of adversity. It added that the Force was committed to honouring the memory of their “fallen heroes by recognizing their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice”. It said the Force was also focused on the search for the other six policemen while all their families had been duly contacted. “In accordance with this commitment, the Force will posthumously honour the slain officers for their noble service and ultimate sacrifice at the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations Ceremony scheduled for April 5, 2024, in Abuja. The statement added, “In response to this grievous loss, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has taken decisive actions as expected. The bodies of six of the slain officers have been recovered after a fierce search conducted by a combined team of police officers and other security outfits. “Additionally, the Inspector General of Police has mandated the expedited processing and payment of all entitlements due to the families of the fallen officers, aiming to alleviate any financial burdens they may encounter in this challenging time. “Similarly, immediate measures have been initiated to ensure that justice is served swiftly and the perpetrators of this abhorrent crime are brought to justice. The Inspector General of Police has mandated the deployment of all necessary resources and personnel to apprehend those responsible for this senseless killing of our officers, and this has led to the arrest of five suspects in connection with the preceding incident and the killing, who are currently volunteering information necessary for the rounding up of all the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Defence Headquarters on Saturday said its troops were deploying efforts to track down the culprits responsible for the killings of 18 soldiers in the Okuama community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. In a statement signed by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, and made available to journalists in Warri on Saturday, it said that to “curb the freedom of action of terrorists and the perpetrators of insecurity across the country,” it had released a banner of wanted terrorists and their cohorts. “The banners would be deployed in strategic areas across the country. The deployment of the banner is for ease of recognition and arrest of the wanted persons,” it added. Also, a socio-cultural group, O’odua Integrity Network, on Saturday criticised a former military officer, Maj Gen Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd.) over his comment on the killings of the soldiers in Okuama, describing it as “unsolicited misrepresentation of private security oil pipelines surveillance”. This was contained in a statement signed by Chief Adewale Adeosun and Ige Kilanko, as the President and Secretary of the group, respectively. It said, “The press statement of General Olanrewaju had diluted intentions than meets the eyes. The local oil thieves and their international backers whose criminal activities were dealt crippling blows by the private security companies, have latched on to the Okuama killings to raise their ugly heads once again. “In a hurry to discharge the job he was hired to deliver, the retired general said constitutionally recognised military institutions should be positioned and equipped to do the job through specially-trained and strategically built forces like it’s done in India and Venezuela. “He poured venoms on the operators of private surveillance security providers hired by the Federal Government to safeguard the nation’s oil and gas equipment, labelling them as militants, thugs, and hoodlums, who are not different from bandits.” Meanwhile, a socio-political group in the Niger Delta region, Coalition of Niger Delta Activists, has called for the prosecution of military personnel involved in the razing of Okuama community and the extra-judicial murder of innocent civilians, including women and children. The group, led by Rex Anighoro, described the actions of the Nigerian Army in Okuama and other areas within the Niger Delta region following the killings of 17 soldiers as “egregious and crimes against humanity”. It noted that the development “constitutes grave violations of human rights and must be met with swift and decisive legal action”. “The development is already sparking outrage that demands accountability from activists, residents of the Niger Delta, and individuals of goodwill. Such acts, labelled as war crimes, are condemned unequivocally by CONDA as gross violations of human rights and dignity,” it added.

Resign now, Lagos LP tells Abure

Lagos chairman of the Labour Party, (LP) Rasheed Bamishe has urged the National Chairman Julius Abure to resign to sustain the party’s integrity. Bamishe said Abure should prioritise the party interest while a Caretaker National Chairman should be appointed to organise State Congresses before convening the National Convention. Speaking at the party secretariat in Lagos on Saturday, Bamishe called on the National Working Committee, members of the party Board of Trustees and other relevant stakeholders to prevent Abure from holding his proposed National Convention on March 27, 2024 “We urge Barrister Abure to leave the Party now because the litany of corrupt cases against him has done collateral damage to the image of the Labour Party. “The Labour Party which was formed by the founding fathers to be a beckon of hope for millions of Nigerians is gradually being destroyed by Barrister Abure and this should not be allowed to continue,” he said. Bamishe added that Abure was free to create his political party and manage its business but declared the Labour Party as a democratic organisation cannot function as a one-man show. He claimed that allegations of dishonesty, forgery, and fabrication of signatures have brought public shame and embarrassment to the Labour Party’s National Chairman Even if all these allegations are not true, the reasonable option open to the embattled Labour Party National Chairman is to step aside to pave the way for thorough investigations into the cases of alleged fraud against him. In a civilized clime, Barrister Abure should have exited office since the flurry of fraud cases against him became public knowledge but because of the culture of impunity in Nigeria, he is still clinging to power. “Barrister Abure should tell the world where the National Convention of Labour Party in which he emerged as National Chairman was held. “Barrister Abure is plotting to install himself again as the National Chairman of Labour Party through another illegal Convention and this should not be allowed to happen,” he stressed. He stressed the need for all stakeholders to unite to seek all legitimate options including litigation to make sure Abure is removed from office to restore credibility, dignity, and integrity to the party.

EXPLAINER: Everything to know about Moscow terrorist attack

In a harrowing act of violence, Crocus City Hall, a renowned concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow, became the scene of a brutal terrorist attack. The incident occurred just as the popular rock band “Picnic” was preparing to perform to a sold-out crowd. According to Russia’s prosecutor general, at least four individuals clad in camouflage stormed the venue, unleashing chaos and fear. The aftermath is grim. More than 60 lives have been claimed, with over 100 individuals sustaining injuries. The terror group ISIS has purportedly taken responsibility for the attack through its affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram, yet no evidence has been provided to substantiate this claim. As flames engulfed the concert hall, emergency responders sprang into action, evacuating approximately 100 people from the basement and initiating rescue operations for those trapped on the roof. The Russian Investigative Committee is treating the incident as a terrorist act and has confirmed that the death toll has risen to at least 133, with the possibility of further casualties as the search through the rubble continues. In response to this atrocity, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the nation, condemning the attack as a “barbaric act of terrorism” and expressing his determination to bring the perpetrators to justice. Amidst the turmoil, President Putin has also levelled accusations against Ukraine, suggesting the neighbouring country had plans to aid the suspects’ escape, a claim that Kyiv has vehemently denied. The swift action of Russian authorities led to the arrest of 11 individuals, including the four gunmen believed to be responsible for the attack. The head of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported these developments directly to President Putin. This tragedy has not only shaken Russia but has also caught the attention of the international community. U.S. officials, having previously gathered intelligence on potential ISIS activities in Russia, had issued warnings against attending large gatherings.

ALERT: Beware of scammers posing as officers, NDLEA warns Nigerians

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has warned the public, particularly those with relatives abroad, about a new fraudulent scheme being orchestrated by impersonators posing as NDLEA officers. This was made known in a statement by the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, shared on the agency’s website on Saturday. The statement said, “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency wishes to alert members of the public especially those who have loved ones abroad to a new scheme by scammers who impersonate NDLEA officers and call unsuspecting citizens to inform them of the arrest of their relatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja Lagos or any other international airport in Nigeria with illicit drugs upon arrival in the country. “After throwing the family members into panic, the scammers then make a demand of millions of naira to facilitate the release of such persons from NDLEA custody. We have thwarted a number of such bids in the past when the family members called the agency’s official contacts for help or clarification. “At the moment, there is one such scenario the agency has just investigated. In this case, the picture of a Nigerian man based in the US is being circulated with audio of a purported NDLEA officer negotiating the payment of N5 million with a female relative for the release of the US-based Nigerian man purportedly arrested at the Lagos airport on Friday 22nd March upon his arrival with a ‘contraband’“ Just like in previous instances, our investigation has also shown that the current incident is the work of scammers. No NDLEA officer is involved in the audio conversation and the person whose photo is attached to the audio recording being circulated is not in our custody at MMIA or any of our commands either as at yesterday or any other day. “The family members involved in this case are advised not to part with their hard-earned money to scammers. Nigerians with loved ones abroad are also urged to keep discussions on travel plans of their relatives to themselves to avoid the hijack of such by criminal elements for devious schemes. ”For those who may have a similar challenge, please feel free to seek help or clarification through any of our contact lines”
