Bitcoin Zooms To Record Beyond $72,000

Bitcoin raced to an all-time peak above $72,000 Monday as the world’s most popular cryptocurrency won further support on greater trading accessibility and dollar weakness. The virtual unit struck $72,234 as dealers also eyed an upcoming industry event that traditionally boosts Bitcoin’s price. Monday’s spurt extended last week’s record-breaking run when the currency bulldozed its way past the previous November 2021 pinnacle of $68,991. Bitcoin won further support Monday after Britain’s Financial Conduct Authority watchdog said it would join US regulators by allowing the creation of crypto-related securities. US authorities earlier this year gave the green light to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pegged to bitcoin’s spot price, making it easier for mainstream investors to add the unit to their portfolio. Crypto ‘going mainstream’ “This (FCA statement) suggests that crypto is going mainstream, and not just bitcoin but also other established coins,” XTB analyst Kathleen Brooks told AFP. “We know that the demand is there, and this comes on the back of $10 billion of inflows into bitcoin ETFs in the United States.” ETFs are widely regarded by commentators as proof of burgeoning crypto interest from institutional investors, further buoying investor enthusiasm. Bitcoin is created — or “mined” — as a reward when powerful computers solve complex problems to validate transactions made on the blockchain. But the reward given to bitcoin “miners” — those who contribute to the creation of the blockchain by validating transactions — is about to be divided by two. Next month’s so-called “halving” has lent strong support to the unit’s price in recent days and weeks by tightening supplies. “Bitcoin has surged to a fresh all time high, boosted by strong ETF inflows and ahead of the April halving event,” said City Index analyst Fiona Cincotta. “The crypto market has skyrocketed 350 percent from its 2022 low and shows little sign of stopping after the doors have been opened to institutional investors and as retail investors experience FOMO,” she said in reference to a ‘fear of missing out’. Cincotta predicted that $100,000 could become “the next natural target” but sounded a note of caution. “Bitcoin is extremely volatile and could drop just as quickly as it has risen,” she warned. Who Created Bitcoin? Momentum came also from the weaker dollar as Friday’s US jobs data firmed expectations that the Federal Reserve remained on track to start cutting interest rates in June. At its current price, bitcoin has soared almost 70 percent since January, when it stood at about $43,000. However, it slumped to $15,000 in November 2022 following the collapse of crypto exchange FTX. The digital currency has a finite number of units. Bitcoin’s creator Satoshi Nakamoto has limited the maximum number of bitcoins to 21 million. An ongoing court case in London is seeking to determine whether Australian computer scientist Craig Wright invented bitcoin. Wright says that he is Nakamoto, author of a white paper that introduced the cryptocurrency to the world in 2008. Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit organisation set up to keep cryptocurrency technology free from patents, is suing Wright over the claims. AFP

PDP Expels Obio/Akpor Councilor After Declaring Support For Fubara

Days after resigning his position and declaring support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, former leader of the Obio/Akpor legislative council, Hon. Achor Nna has been expelled by his ward chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter titled ‘RE: EXPULSION OF HON ACHOR NNA’ dated 9th March 2024 and signed by the PDP Ward 9 Chairman in Obio/Akpor LGA, Collins Chukwu, the ward accused the lawmaker of failing to defend himself from allegations of misconduct and misappropriation despite receiving multiple invitations to do so. The letter which reads: “The Ward 9 PDP executive under the able Chairmanship of Chukwu Collins Wobo, JP on the 10th day of February 2024 received from the Elioparanwo PDP chapter the suspension of Hon Achor Nna the former leader of OBIO/AKPOR LGA council legislative arm. “In view of the above the chairman of Ward 9 acting in compliance with chapter 10, section 57 (1) of the party constitution set up a disciplinary committee purposely to ascertain the veracity of the allegations against Hon. Achor Nna. The disciplinary committee headed by Chief Solomon Chime Esq invited him (Achor Nna) severally and repeatedly to appear before the committee to defend himself of the grievous allegations (misappropriation of funds and misconduct) against him which invitations were utterly turned down. “In view of this, the committee recommended that he (Hon Achor Nna) be expelled from the party and the fact that Hon Achor Nna was unable to defend himself, he was expelled from the party, we had no option but to take this decision as the ward cannot condole his unwarranted acts and indiscipline. “So, the resignation of Hon Achor Nna from his position as the leader of OBIO AKPOR legislative council and as councillor Ward 9 didn’t come to us a surprise because he couldn’t defend himself from the allegations against him which led to his expulsion from the Party. “Apparently, the political crisis in Rivers state is far from resolution as both sides continue jostling for control of the political structure in the state.”

The state Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, who made this announcement during the Food Safety Stakeholders Forum, and the inauguration of the task force, held at the conference room of the ministry, Secretariat, Agodi in Ibadan, the state capital, said the decision was part of government efforts to uphold food safety standards in the state. Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Akintunde Ayinde, Ajetunmobi said, “Prevention is better and cheaper than cure; hence the need for people to adhere strictly to food standards to save lives in the state. “The menace of food poisoning, indiscriminate use of chemical products for food production, processing, packaging, and other sharp practices being carried out by food business operators have become great public health concerns in the state. “The directorate of Food, Water, and Laboratory Services is saddled with the responsibility to regulate food business operations to ensure the presentation of wholesome edibles for public consumption in the state, planned to double her efforts to monitor/inspect food business premises in the state. “Consequently, the use of Styrofoam for food services, storage, and other related usage in the state is also banned.” She declared. The commissioner explained that the task force would be sensitising the actors along the food chain on the importance attached to the implementation of food safety standards by the government. Earlier, the director of food, water, and laboratory services in the ministry, Afusat Akande, highlighted the basic requirements that actors along the food chain must meet before they can be certified. Akande explained that the requirements included routine medical fitness certificates from designated state government hospitals, evidence of regular fumigation of production premises by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources recognized consultant, and water quality analysis by the Ministry of Health recognized consultant, among others. The permanent secretary, Ayinde, who is the leader of the task force, promised to work with the ministry to achieve its set objective. The task force comprises members from the state Food Safety Management Committee, the Nigeria Police Force, the Association of Table Water Producers, the Association of Canteen Workers, and a host of others. In January, the Lagos State Government kickstarted the ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the state. Buhari: Tinubu has done very well — Nigeria is so complex

Muhammadu Buhari, former president of Nigeria, says President Bola Tinubu has done well given the prevailing circumstances. Tinubu has unfurled a slew of economic reforms since he took over the reins of leadership from Buhari on May 29, 2023. Some of the president’s policies — notably the removal of subsidy on petrol and the unification of the exchange rate windows — have led to galloping inflation and economic hardship. Protesters and organised labour have taken to streets across the country in recent weeks to rail against the worsening economic hardship and the naira’s depreciation. Speaking on Sunday when he received the comptroller-general and members of the management team of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Daura, Katsina state, Buhari said governing Nigeria is a tough job for anyone. He asked Nigerians to endure the economic hardship in the country and support the policies and programmes of the current administration. “I thank you very much for coming. I very much appreciate it. I thought Tinubu has done very well,” Buhari said. “Nigeria is so complex. Really, there isn’t much anybody can do.” On his part, Bashir Adeniyi, comptroller-general of customs, commended the former president for “transforming the NCS” during his stint in office. Adeniyi said the service would continue to ensure that the country’s borders are secured in order to enhance Nigeria’s economy.

More Pro-Wike Supporters Collapse Structure For Fubara

Barely four days after Achor Nna, the councillor representing the ward of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, resigned his position to support Governor Siminalayi Fubara, another group of Wike’s supporters have collapsed their structure for the Rivers governor. The latest to join Fubara’s camp is a group of 12 men who were Local Government Coordinators of Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political pressure group that was instrumental in the massive mobilization at the grassroots for the FCT minister while contesting the governorship elections in Rivers State since 2015. The coordinators represent Ogu/Bolo, Port Harcourt City, Opobo/Nkoro, Gokana, Bonny, Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Oyigbo, Asari-Toru, Akuku-Toru and Obio/Akpor local government area where the Wike comes from. The former coordinator in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Collins Onunwo, who led the delegation to the Governor at the Government House in Port Harcourt, said they decided to resign their leadership positions in GDI to protect, defend, and promote the interest of Rivers State and its people. Onunwo, who was a former caretaker chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, said the group has no option but to support Fubara, having freely given their votes and mandate to him, a decision that has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. He pledged the determination and dedication of the former GDI coordinators to the success of the policies and programmes of the present administration. “We want the public, Rivers people, and all Nigerians to know that GDI is the group founded by the former governor and now Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike. That group brought him to power in 2015 and supported his ambition in 2019. That group is his strength,” he said. “But today, we and our supporters have decided we are no longer members of GDI. The reason is simple: we want to be with Rivers people. Rivers’ interest is paramount. In 2012, GDI’s interest was to protect, defend, and promote our brother-in-law, President Goodluck Jonathan, because of our mother and sister, Dame Patience Jonathan; and it yielded good dividends to the state. “Through that struggle, our brother, Chief Nyesom Wike, became governor in 2015; and in 2019, when Abuja politicians said he will not return for a second tenure, we all rallied around him and defended our votes, and he served for eight years. “Today, Rivers’ interest is to protect our votes that brought in Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Executive Governor of Rivers State in the most credible, fair, and violence-free election. We have come to join millions of Rivers women, youths, elders, and other well-meaning people who insist that we must protect our votes to sustain democracy. Our concern is that we voted for PDP and Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and we must protect that mandate with all we have”. He further cautioned those fighting against the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr Edison Ehie, to retrace their steps, or prepare to face the wrath of Rivers youths, women, and elders. Also speaking, former Public Relations Officer of GDI ACF, Christian Abu, said that the simple message is that the ex-GDI coordinators just resigned to get Simplified, clarifying that GDI has been the vehicle and political structure for the successes recorded in the previous elections in the state. Abu said, “Getting Simplified means that the strategies, movement, and vehicle that always conveyed electoral successes to the previous administrations have brought the same support to the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara. “Our support for him today is total, and unwavering. We are committed and dedicated to his victory and mandate. We had sleepless nights to achieve this victory, and we have come to protect the mandate freely given to Sir Siminalayi Fubara under the platform of the PDP,” he added. At the meeting were the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Chijioke Ihunwo; and Special Adviser to the Governor on Power, Solomon Abel-Eke; among others.
