Protest in Edo over Shaibu’s impeachment plot

Thousands of indigenes and residents of Edo North senatorial district in Edo state on Sunday, March 10, staged a peaceful protes over the plot to remove deputy governor Philip Shaibu. Shaibu hails from Edo North senatorial district of the state. The protesters also asked Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is at loggerheads with Shaibu over the authentic governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21, election to allow peace reign in the state. They also begged the speaker of the state House of Assembly Blessing Agbebaku, to shelve the impeachment move against Shaibu. The displeased protesters, who were chanting anti-Obaseki songs, were armed with placards bearing various inscriptions, including: “No to impeachment of Edo deputy governor”, “Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding”, “Give peace a chance” and “We choose peace against impeachment.” Others included: “Edo North people are saying no to impeachment”, “Drop impeachment move against your deputy,” “We are saying no to impeachment of Deputy Governor” and “Edo people reject impeachment of the Deputy Governor.” The protesters, who were mostly PDP’s members, supporters, grassroots’ mobilisers, lovers and admirers of Edo deputy governor trooped to the streets to protest the allegations against him, which they considered as not only frivolous, but political vendetta. The protesting women, men and youths, under the aegis of Edo North PDP Rescue Movement (ENREM), first converged on the popular Jattu Junction, Etsako West Local Government Area in Edo North senatorial district of Edo state, while they later marched round the major streets of the communities in Etsako West LGA. Leader of the protesters, Festus Owu, while addressing reporters, told Edo lawmakers to focus on providing good legislation for residents of the state, rather than engaging in the fruitless venture of impeachment that would bring no food to the table of the hungry Edo people, who, according to him, suffered the brunt of bad governance and poor representation in the state. The Agbebaku-led 24 lawmakers were asked to listen to the voice of reason, rather than working against the interest of Afemai (Edo North people), his own people, who elected him in Owan West constituency, to represent their interest. Owu declared that the persons behind the impeachment plot were people, who in the past, greatly benefited from the good gesture and kindness of Shaibu. He condemned the shocking roles of Obaseki in the impeachment saga, while reminding him of the inalienable and fundamental right of Shaibu to express his desire to be elected governor of Edo state. Leader of the protesters said: “Any party that wants to win election must believe in coherence, must believe in resolving the problems facing them, and not exacerbate them. Every man has the right to contest an election. Rt. Hon. (Comrade) Philip Shaibu has expressed his willingness to contest to be Edo governor, and anyone trying to stop his legitimate aspiration is deliberately returning Edo to the era of godfatherism “Governor Obaseki needs to be reminded of his statement few years ago that anybody, including himself, should be stoned whenever attempt is made to become a godfather in Edo politics. The governor will not be stoned, but will be left to be tormented by his own conscience. “Agbebaku shoule not to become a puppet and rubber stamp speaker, in the hands of enemies of Edo State, who do not mean well for the residents. The silence of the leadership of PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) is questionable, unacceptable and acceptance of being part of the ongoing evil in Edo State, as their silence is clear leadership failure. PDP leaders must quickly do the needful and save the party from imminent collapse. “If you tell a man not to farm in your farmland, it does not mean he will not farm that year. What Edo State desires now is peace.” Owu also admonished all stakeholders to join hands with Obaseki and Shaibu to ensure peace in Edo, and mobilise support across the 18 local government areas of the state for PDP’s candidate to win the forthcoming governorship election.

Court Orders Final Forfeiture Of 36 Exotic Cars ‘Stolen’ From Canada

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of 36 exotic cars, allegedly stolen from Canada to Nigeria. Justice Deinde Dipeolu made the final forfeiture order, while granting an application filed and argued by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Listed as respondents in the suit are: Wilmon Autos Nigeria Limited; Ikeoyi Enterprises; Ichie Autos; Bounce Autos; Assured Motors, Emeko Auto; CNC Auto; Green Hill Auto; First Core Auto; Samuel Motors; Unique Motors; Nice and Rich Auto; Overall Properties; GIDI Auto and Chris Jane Auto Nigeria Limited. The auto shops where the cars were recovered from are located are at Lekki-Ajah; Ojodu-Berger; Ikeja; Festac Town; Magodo and Ikota-Lekki areas respectively. On November 29, 2023, the court had made an order for the interim/temporary forfeiture of the cars, after listening to the EFCC’s lawyer, Abdul Rasheed who moved the application for the order. In granting the application, the court ordered the EFCC to advertise the orders in a national newspaper, for any interested persons/parties to appear before the court, and show cause, why the cars should not be permanently forfeited. At the resumption of proceedings last Wednesday, the EFCC counsel informed the court that the order of the court made in November 2023, had been complied with, by advertising the interim forfeiture order on page 19, of the January 30, 2024 edition of The Punch newspaper, and that no person or party has filed any counter affidavit to the forfeiture. The counsel therefore urged the court to grant his agency’s request by ordering the final forfeiture of the cars. The EFCC also attached an affidavit in support of the application of the final forfeiture order which was deposed to by one of its investigators, Olufemi Olukini. Parts of the deposition of the deponent in the affidavit read: “sometime in April, 2022, during an official meeting held at 7A Okoti-eboh Street, Ikoyi Lagos, between officials of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and EFCC officials, RCMP officials passed credible intelligence to the Commission which alleged that over 350 vehicles which were comprehensively listed out on an excel sheet with their respective vehicle identification Number (VIN) were stolen from Canada and shipped to Nigeria. “That these vehicles have been sold and/or being sold on an online website by some online vendors/agents while others are displayed for sale at various car stands across the country. “That our team commenced preliminary investigation into the case by identifying the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of each of the said stolen vehicle and subjecting them to analysis using open source intelligence (OSINT). And that preliminary results from the analysis revealed the vehicles were largely located across Lagos State metropolis particularly Lekki at different Car stands and places “Surveillance was thereafter carried out on the identified locations followed by sting operations which led to the recovery of the vehicles. “The VIN of the vehicles corresponds with those of the stolen vehicles contained in the Intelligence received from RCMP and no person has come forward to claim ownership of these vehicles. “Investigation carried out revealed that substantial number of the motor vehicles described aforesaid were stolen from Canada and shipped to Nigeria between the years 2019-2021. “That the cars were parked in residential driveways and company car lots in Canada from where they were stolen. And that various Canadian Insurance Companies which insured the vehicles indemnified the car owners and are pursuing criminal complainant lodged in Canada with the RCMP Liaison Officer attached to the Canadian Deputy High Commission, Nigeria in respect to the theft of the vehicles. “That based on the facts stated in paragraphs, the applicant filed an application dated 13th October, 2023 for interim forfeiture of properties to the Federal Government of Nigeria which was duly granted by this Honourable Court on 29th November, 2023. This Honourable Court ordered for publication of the said order in The Punch Newspaper and the Commission’s website for any interested party to show cause why the property should nof be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. “That in compliance with the order of Court, Applicant on the 30th January, 2024 made publication on page 19 of The Punch newspaper and the Commission’s website. Since then, no person, body corporate or financial institution has come forward to show cause why the property should not be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. “That applicant has now filed this Application for the final forfeiture of the Assets to the Federal Government of Nigeria. “That it is expedient and in the best interest of justice to grant this application. And that the respondents will not be prejudiced by the grant of this application.” After listening to the submissions and considering the documents attached, Justice Dipeolu acceded to the request of the anti graft agency and ordered the final forfeiture of the 36 cars. Blackout In Parts Of Abuja, Shiroro-Katampe Line Vandalised

Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were on Sunday thrown into darkness as sabouteurs vandalised the Shiroro-Katampe 330kV transmission line. According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the vandalism of the transmission line makes it the fifth of such incident within February and March this. The incident happened at 9am on Sunday. “Following initial investigations, TCN engineers attempted to restore operation but were unsuccessful,” said a spokesperson for the TCN, Ndidi Mbah. Mbah, in a statement, said efforts were made to identify the fault location, while linesmen were dispatched to physically patrol the suspected area. “During the fault tracing process, vigilante team leaders in the vicinity notified TCN linesmen of vandalism along the Shiroro-Katampe transmission line. TCN personnel confirmed the vandalisation of the 330kV Shiroro-Katampe transmission line 1, from Towers 244 to 245, and the conductors stolen. “TCN is currently mobilizing for conductor replacement, pending completion of security operations at the site. Nevertheless, the second line remains fully operational, in conjunction with the Gwagwalada 330kV line serving the Kukwaba-Apo axis,” Mbah statedm adding that the wheeling capacity of TCN towards Abuja and environs would be enhanced by the Lokoja-Gwagwalada 330kV transmission line. “TCN is working hard to minimise the adverse effect of these acts of sabotage on bulk power supply to Abuja and environs,” the company stated. “This incident adds to a series of vandalism incidents recorded by TCN in February 2024, including the destruction of Tower 70 along the Gwagwalada-Katampe transmission line on February 26, 2024. Other incidents include the vandalism of towers 377 and 378 along the Gombe-Damaturu 330kV transmission line on February 23, 2024, and the attack on towers 145 to 149 and 201 to 218 along the Owerri-Ahoda 132kV transmission line on February 15, 2024. “Additionally, on February 1, 2024, Tower number 388 along the Jos-Bauchi 132kV single circuit transmission line collapsed due to vandalism. “These acts of sabotage are unacceptable, and TCN urges relevant security agencies and host communities to collaborate in apprehending the perpetrators. Protection of the nation’s transmission infrastructure is paramount, and collaborative efforts are required to curb these incidents. “TCN calls upon all Nigerians to assist in reporting acts of vandalism. Electricity infrastructure is a national asset and safequarding it is a collective responsibility.”

Tinubu to launch students loan scheme Thursday

President Bola Tinubu will launch the Student Loan Scheme on Thursday, March 14, 2024. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Ajuri Ngelale, disclosed this when he spoke on TVC’s Politics on Sunday monitored by PUNCH Online. On the programme titled ‘Counting the Cost of Presidents Tinubu’s Reforms,’ Ngelale highlighted some of the President’s welfare initiatives being implemented at the moment, saying, “Later this week, on Thursday, the President will launch the historic National Student Loan Programme.” “This is a major form of obligation reduction for Nigerians and families and young people at a time when Nigerians are feeling the pinch. We believe this is the way to go,” he added. On June 12, 2023, Tinubu signed the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023, into law to enable indigent students to access interest-free loans for their educational pursuits in any Nigerian tertiary institution. The move was in “fulfillment of one of his campaign promises to liberalise funding of education,” a member of the then Presidential Strategy Team, Dele Alake, said. The Act, popularly known as the Students Loan Law, also established the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which is expected to handle all loan requests, grants, disbursement, and recovery. The government initially said it would take effect in September, but it did not. However, Tinubu had insisted that the scheme would go live in January 2024. Declaring the 29th session of the annual Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja open on October 23, 2023, the President said, “By January 2024, the new Students Loan Programme must commence. To the future of our children and students, we’re saying no more strikes!” He proposed N50bn for its take-off in the 2024 budget he presented to the National Assembly last November. On February 7, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, Dr Akintunde Sawyerr, exclusively confirmed to our correspondent that the much-awaited scheme would go live on February 21, when President Tinubu launches it at the State House, Abuja. However, the launch was delayed, with Sawyerr, alongside Presidency sources, explaining that the lag time is to enable the Fund to expand its mandate to include students seeking loans for skills development, as directed by the President. After receiving briefing from the NELFUND team led by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, on January 22, the President directed the Fund to extend interest-free loans to Nigerian students interested in skill-development programmes. Tinubu based his decision on the need for the scheme to accommodate those who may not want to pursue a university education, noting that skill acquisition is as essential as obtaining undergraduate and graduate academic qualifications. “This is not an exclusive programme. It is catering to all of our young people. Young Nigerians are gifted in different areas. “This is not only for those who want to be doctors, lawyers, and accountants. It is also for those who aspire to use their skilled and trained hands to build our nation. “In accordance with this, I have instructed NELFUND to explore all opportunities to inculcate skill-development programmes because not everybody wants to go through a full university education,” he had said. Linking this directive to the delay, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga had told The PUNCH, “Don’t forget that the last time they met, the President asked them to go and expand their mandate to include those who want to learn vocational skills. That could be the reason why the whole thing was delayed; they had to increase the scope.” On Saturday, Sawyerr also told our correspondent that the delay is due to unperfected backend systems to power the application process as the scheme is “entirely technologically driven.” He said, “The delay in take-off was basically to enable the agency to put all necessary measures in place as the scheme is entirely technologically driven.”

Naira will appreciate to N1200 against dollar – Goldman Sachs

Global investment bank, Goldman Sachs has forecasted that the Naira will appreciate to N1200 per US dollar in twelve months. Goldman Sachs analysts, Andrew Matheny and Bojosi Morule disclosed this in their recent analysis of Nigeria’s current economic realities. The US-based financial institution highlighted the recent upward interest rate adjustment by monetary authorities in Nigeria and a recent N1.6 trillion bill auction by the central bank as signals that the country is turning the tables on a previous unorthodox policy regime that hindered the naira from trading freely.   “These developments have prompted us to shift to a constructive outlook for the Naira, which our FX strategists expect to appreciate to NGN 1200 vs. the USD in 12 months,” Goldman Sachs said. Goldman Sachs backed the recent monetary policy by the Nigerian government to rescue the Naira, which was described as ‘cheap’ or undervalued. The analysts believed that the country’s foreign exchange crisis would be resolved if the government saw to monetary policies. Recall that the Naira traded at N1627.40 per USD on Friday at the FMDQ official exchange market The Central Bank of Nigeria has unveiled several monetary policies. The latest was the new draft guidelines for Bureau de Change operators in the last two months. Also recently, Binance, a cryptocurrency, discontinued its Naira transactions over regulatory clampdown by the Nigerian government.
