31 million Nigerians expected to be in food crisis – Report

About 31.5 million people, including 83,846 IDPs in 26 states and the FCT, are expected to be in crisis or worse between June and August 2024, a report, Cadre Harmonisé, has said. The report also stated that 24.7 million people including 14,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be in food crisis or worse between March and May 2024. Cadre Harmonisé is a food and nutrition insecurity analysis by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with technical partners including the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Analysiing the result further, it noted that about 1.1 million people in Adamawa State are expected to be in crisis or worse between June and August 2024, and about 2.1 million people in Borno are expected to be in crisis or worse between June and August this year, while 1.5 million people in Yobe are expected to be in crisis or worse between June and August this year. Also, deteriorated food consumption situation was also observed among populations in the inaccessible areas and the IDPs in Adanawa, Borno, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. It noted that the deteriorating food consumption results from a significant spike in food prices due to high production and transportation costs caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and its resultant impact on inflation and consumer price index rates on both food and basic non-food items. The report noted that the high cost of transport, inflation rate, and the volatile dollar-naira exchange rate have negatively affected households’ income. In the projected period (June to August 2024), poor microeconomic conditions and conflicts are expected to drive limited access to livelihood opportunities. “The nutrition situation in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) and northwest states of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara revealed the prevalence of malnutrition for Under-5 children to be in crisis in the current situation. However, the report said key drivers of the crisis include conflict and insecurity, fuel scarcity, naira devaluation currency crisis, and rising inflation and Consumer Price Index (CPI) rates. In his remarks, Country Representative of the FAO to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Koffy Kouacou Dominique, said the FAO will continue to support the Cadre Harmonisé process, especially in terms of funding as well as technical support and capacity building, across the country. Dominique, who was represented by the Deputy FAO Country Representative, Suleiman Abubakar, said the Cadre Harmonisé analysis produces the most reliable and widely acceptable data/results for humanitarian programming and food security. Also, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Temitope Fashedemi, who was represented by the Director of Special duties, Adedayo Modupe, said the government has put machinery in place to address the challenges to food and nutrition insecurity. Meanwhile, the Seme border command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’, Ikeja has intercepted 880 bags of white beans, 584 bags of onions and 400 sacks of grains on the verge of being smuggled into Benin Republic. The unit also intercepted export bound trucks loaded with 18 bags of dry pepper at Ajilete/Idiroko Road in Ogun State.

EXTRA: Kidnappers Deserve Death Penalty, Says Remi Tinubu

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on state governors and lawmakers to prescribe capital punishment for kidnapping. While lamenting the abduction of children and women whom she says are the future of the country, Remi Tinubu described the act as heart-rending. Her media aide Busola Kukoyi quoted Remi Tinubu as saying this during a meeting with the national women leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja. “They are cowards. Our hearts bleed. I call on the state governments that once we take hold of them, they deserve capital punishment. Why can’t they take men of their size, why are they touching women and children,” Remi Tinubu according to a Friday statement by Busola. ““What they are doing is that they are trying to kill our future, we all know that when parents are old, we rely on our children, we see them as our investments that have not gone to waste especially when they are successful. “Why will you now take them from their schools? Right now, I think enough is enough. As a former lawmaker, I believe that any one of them captured deserves capital punishment. “I believe most mothers will support me on this because we carry our children for nine months, and we cannot watch what we love to wither away,” she said. Senator Tinubu also told the women that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu places a strong emphasis on creating opportunities for women to thrive economically, socially, and politically. “As women, we constitute a significant portion of our society, and it is vital that our voices are heard and our contributions acknowledged. As women leaders, your role is very crucial to our nation’s development. You are the eyes and ears of the Government at the grassroots. I therefore encourage you to set a robust agenda for empowerment, inclusion, and welfare of women within our Party and across the Nation,” she told the gathering. Friday’s meeting coincided with the 2024 International Women’s Day with Remi Tinubu celebrating Nigerian women for their courage, resilience, and doggedness. “”On my part, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) was established to focus on championing women’s causes and implementing various programmes and initiatives nationwide with our motto, which states, ‘Towards a better life for families’. ““Accelerating progress in any endeavour requires that women have to be more involved, that is why I see investing in women, not as charity, but as a crucial strategy to build the future of our dear nation, Nigeria. ““Empowering women with education, resources, and opportunities to unlock their full potentials, such as supporting women’s businesses, investing in women’s health, agricultural programmes for women, and creating pathways for women in science and technology will help in dismantling economic and social barriers that women face. “”Therefore, my charge to you all is to be each other’s keeper, let us all come together, bond, and love one another. Each of you should commit to pulling a sister up, one at a time. You will all be amazed at what we can achieve collectively,” she said. Earlier, the group, led by its national leader, Dr Mary Alile; her deputy, Zainab Ibrahim, and members of the executive, thanked Senator Remi for her impact on the lives of Nigerians through various interventions on the platform of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). It also requested her help to press for more inclusion in the current government.

Over 3,500 terrorist attacks recorded in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger — ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States recorded over 3,500 terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic in 2023 which resulted in nearly 7,000 deaths. ECOWAS Commission, however, said the regional bloc was establishing a terrorism force to address the challenge. The Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, ECOWAS Commission, Amb. Abdel-Fatau Musa disclosed this at the weekly press briefing of the ECOWAS Commission held on Friday in Abuja. Fatau noted that nearly 2,000 attacks were recorded in Burkina Faso, over 1,044 in Mali, and 500 in Niger Republic. He explained, “The whole geographical area of West Africa is rich in human and natural resources. However, our geographic area is an area of immense vulnerability. “Particularly the Sahel countries; in 2023 alone, over 3,500 terrorist attacks were recorded. “This includes close to 2,000 in Burkina Faso, over 1,044 in Mali, and 500 in Niger Republic. These incidents resulted in close to 7,000 fatalities in the three Sahel countries of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. “In the three Sahel countries, a total of 4.8 million people faced food insecurity, 2.4 million people were internally displaced and close to 9,000 schools remain closed in the region. “Burkina Faso has already taken over from Afghanistan.” The commissioner added that the creation of Counter Terrorism Force was underway, noting that the region will soon work out modalities to finance the force. “On terrorism, you would recall during that the previous ECOWAS meeting, the Heads of State decided that there was a need to create a counter-terrorism force to help fight terrorism in the region. This is presently underway. “Very soon, there will be a meeting of Ministers of Finance and Defence to work out the modalities of raising our own resources in the region to finance that counter-terrorism force,” he said. The 15-nation bloc ECOWAS, formed in 1975 to promote economic integration in member states, has struggled in recent years to reverse a wave of military takeovers in the region, including Mali in 2020 and 2021, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Niger last year. The exit of three countries from ECOWAS threatened the African Continental Free Trade Area aimed at accelerating intra-African trade and boosting the continent’s trading position in the global market. Earlier, ECOWAS imposed economic sanctions on the countries. The sanctions were, however, lifted last week following the intervention of Nigeria’s ex-military head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon. The President, ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said the decisions were taken in the interest of unity and security in the African sub-region.

Abia police bust baby factory, rescue 16 pregnant women

Operatives of Abia State Police Command busted a baby factory Thursday night at Aba and rescued 16 pregnant inmates. The police also rescued eight children which comprised of five males and three females. Parading the inmates on Friday, an operative of the Rapid Response Squad that led the operation said that the rescue of the inmates followed credible information by locals at their disposal. The RRS operative said, “Yesterday night, we decided to visit the place, a four-story building with 10 flats and another adjacent building in the same compound. “We were able to capture 16 of them, all pregnant. One of the facilitators, Onyinyechi, was also pregnant and another, Ekpene (male) who lives in the compound was also arrested and eight children were recovered.” The operative said they were still hunting for other occupants, while the investigation has commenced, adding, “We are tracking them”. Speaking, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Ngozi Felix, represented by her Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ogechi Oguama, expressed her excitement, stating, “Today, we are celebrating the International Women’s Day, we are receiving back women ‘social mothers’ on their path to destruction.” He added that the ministry is collaborating with the office of the wife of the state governor to receive the women, and promised to keep them in “good custody while investigation is still on”. She lamented that most of the vices are poverty-driven and urged parents to be open to their children and train them on the right tradition. Also speaking, the state governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, commended the police and other security agencies on the feat, stating that they have shown commitment and professionalism and this is not the first time they are recording the feat. “The truth is that if they have not shown professionalism and commitment in ensuring that sanity is ensured, maybe, the discovery may not have been made. The police in the state determined that whoever is involved in the illicit activity must be brought to justice and needs the support of the public through credible information. “We as a government are committed to ensuring that peace, security and normalcy are restored in our state. The Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the office of the First Lady will do everything humanly possible to ensure that those girls are protected and properly taken care of, while we will give the necessary support to our security agencies, especially the police to ensure that whoever is involved are properly prosecuted,” he said. Ekeoma appealed to all that “this is not our culture and we are not known for this”. He also appealed to the parents to discourage their children from being involved “in this kind of activity” and advised those who see it as an avenue to make money that this is an unholy business, immoral, unacceptable and anti-society”. Most of the “Social Women” (inmates) attributed their going there due to abandonment by their parents.
