Alleged Tax Evasion: FIRS Moves To File Charges On Fleeing Binance Executive

The Federal High Court in Abuja, has fixed May 17th to rule on an application by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), seeking to serve by substituted means the charge against a top executive of Binance Holdings Limited, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who fled from custody while awaiting trial. Moses Ideho, Counsel to FIRS, hinted at moves to serve the charge of the fleeing defendant, on Tigran Gambaryan, the defendant who has been available since the matter started. This comes days after the Presiding Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, had ruled that it was proper to serve on Gambaryan, the charge against Binance, which is the first defendant in the case. The judge had granted the application of the prosecution, stating that the defendant could represent the crypto-exchange company. The counsel to the defendant, Chukwuka Ikwazuonu, however, said it was inappropriate to serve a criminal charge of another defendant on his client, prompting the judge to adjourn the matter for ruling on the mode of service.   Anjarwalla Escapes From Custody Last month, Anjarwalla escaped the custody of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). He was a suspect in the Federal Government’s ongoing probe into Binance activities in Nigeria. “The Office of the National Security Adviser confirms that Nadeem Anjarwalla, a suspect in the ongoing criminal probe into the activities of Binance in Nigeria has escaped from lawful custody on Friday, 22 March 2024,” the NSA Office said. “Upon receiving the report, the Office of the NSA took immediate steps, in conjunction with relevant security agencies, MDAs, as well as the international community, to apprehend the suspect.   “Preliminary investigation shows that Mr Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport,” it said. “The personnel responsible for the custody of the suspect have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances that led to his escape from lawful detention.” Until his escape, Anjarwalla, who holds British and Kenyan citizenship and serves as Binance’s Africa Regional Manager, was facing trial in Nigerian courts. The suspect escaped while under a 14-day remand order by a court. He was scheduled to appear before it again on April 4, 2024.

2024 UTME: Stop patronising fraudsters, JAMB warns candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has advised candidates writing the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) to desist from giving their details to fraudsters. The Board Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, gave this counsel when fielding questions from newsmen during the monitoring exercise at the JAMB Professional Centre in Bwari on Friday. “Today’s examination is very important to us because we have done so much engineering that we have been trying to do in the last seven years, and we are only successful about it today for the first time.   “Those who are fraudsters, who are doing all sorts of things, know they are in trouble because for the first time we are able to do certain things that we have been aspiring to do. “We have found out that some of the candidates are giving their details to fraudsters, and fortunately, we thank the security agencies as they have been marvellously good to us. “Almost all the persons that have been doing this (fraudulent activities) are already in their nets. I won’t want to mention the numbers, but I’m very happy to tell you that they are in the nets. “We thank the Inspector-General of Police, director-general of the State Secret Service (SSS), director-general of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, and the Nigerian Police Force National CyberCrime Centre (NPF-NCC),” he said. Oloyede, who commended the public, especially parents, for their smooth conduct, said parents usually constitute problems for students in previous exercises. “Everything appears to be going well. We want to thank the public for heeding our advice because it appears everybody is doing what they are expected to do. “Things will move smoothly if parents can keep away. They are the ones constituting problems for the students, but you can see everything is going well,” he said. The registrar appealed to the candidates who experienced glitches in the course of their examinations to remain calm, as they would be rescheduled to write their examinations. He explained that so far the exams had been going smoothly, as only one centre has been reported to have had one problem or another. “We appeal to the public to understand this; some entres will fail. I have heard of only one centre that has failed today. “By the end of today, I expect about 10 per cent of the centres to have one problem or the other because we know the level of development in different parts of the country. “We are not encouraging this, but when it happens, please do not disrupt others. “It is important to note that when a session fails because of a problem, you cannot bring those candidates to do session two, they will have to step aside, and the headquarters will have to be contacted. “The earliest time they can be scheduled will be after 4:30 p.m. so that those slated for sections two and three can write, and these candidates can now write for session four, and in some cases, they can even be scheduled for the following day,” he said. Oloyede called on owners of CBT centres to ensure that they keep their place secure by ensuring that non-candidates and parents keep their distance from the CBT centres. He advised candidates to be upright in their dealings while saying that most tutorial centres were only centres of corruption and malpractice, advising students to stop patronising them. Also, Fatimah Abba, supervisor-in-charge of JAMB Professional Centre, Kogo, in Bwari, said there had not been any technical issues as the exercise had been going on smoothly. Some of the candidates slated for the 8 a.m. exams expressed confidence in the conduct of the exams, calling on the board to sustain the tempo. Yusrah Umar, a first-time candidate, commended the exams’ conduct while calling on the board to increase the timing allocated to each subject to allow for better performance. Another candidate, Victor Ezekiel, said there were no technical glitches as the systems worked effectively all through the exams. NAN reports that over 500,000 candidates will be expected to have written the exams by the end of the first day. About 1.9 million candidates are expected to write the JAMB UTME, which is scheduled to commence on April 19 and end on April 29. (NAN)

Oil Prices Briefly Surge, Stocks Slide On Iran Blasts

Oil prices briefly surged and stock markets slid Friday on reports Israel had carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran, boosting investments deemed safer such as gold.   Iran’s state media reported explosions in the central province of Isfahan on Friday, as US media quoted officials saying Israel had carried out retaliatory strikes against its arch-rival. “Asian markets bore the brunt of the breaking news of a retaliatory attack on Iran by Israel, also sending Dow futures sharply lower and resulting in further spikes in gold and oil prices,” noted Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor. “US markets will not have the opportunity to react directly to the developments until later, but the escalation will put pressure on the main indices, which were already lining up for a weekly drop.” Crude oil prices dropped, having briefly surged as much as four percent on worries about supplies from the oil-rich region. The rush for safety also saw the yen rally against the dollar and gold jump back past $2,400 per ounce, while the Swiss franc and US government bonds won support. Israel had warned it would hit back after Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel almost a week ago, in retaliation for a deadly strike — which Tehran blamed on its foe — that levelled Iran’s consular annex at its embassy in Syria. Fears of a major regional spillover from the war in Gaza between Israel and Iran-backed Palestinian militants have since soared. Appeals by world leaders for de-escalation again echoed on Friday.   There had been no reaction from Israeli or Iranian officials, and the extent of the damage remained unclear. The mood among traders was already downbeat as they contemplated the prospect of the Federal Reserve staying pat on US interest rates this year following data showing jobless claims came in below expectations while a gauge of business activity hit a two-year high. Atlanta Fed boss Raphael Bostic said inflation is “too high” and he felt there was no need to cut borrowing costs until later in the year. New York Fed chief John Williams and governor Michelle Bowman also said they saw fewer reductions than expected, if at all, this year.
