Judge threatens to adjourn Kanu’s trial indefinitely

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court has threatened to adjourn sine die the trial of the leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Nyako said she would commence the trial when the defence was ready. She spoke following the insistence of Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, that his client’s rights to a fair trial were being disrespected. Ejimakor told the court that owing to the accelerated hearing granted by the court, there is a need for his client to be well prepared for the same trial, but the facility where he is being kept isn’t making it easy for them. He also accused the DSS of having hidden cameras around the meeting room where they were supposed to prepare for the said trial. But the prosecution lawyer, Awomolo urged the court to dismiss the application as the defense has not stated cogent reasons why the application should be allowed. The trial judge, Justice Nyako adjourned to May 20 to rule on both applications before the court and ordered that the prosecution commence trial. Nyako, however, stood down the matter for 10 minutes for the defense lawyers to have a quick meeting with Kanu. Details later. . .

Kano court affirms Ganduje’s suspension

The Kano State High Court has granted an ex parte order restraining the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, from parading himself as a member of the party. Subsequently, the court ordered that henceforth, Ganduje should desist from presiding over all affairs of the National Working Committee of the APC. The application granted by Justice Usman Na’abba on Tuesday followed an ex parte motion filed by Dr. Ibrahim Sa’ad on behalf of two executive members of Ganduje’s ward, Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area, the Assistant Secretary, Laminu Sani and Legal Adviser, Haladu Gwanjo (plaintiffs), who were part of the nine ward executives who suspended Ganduje on Monday. The court directed the four parties (respondents) joined in the matter, including the APC, NWC, APC Kano State Working Committee, and Ganduje, to henceforth, maintain status quo ante belum as of April 15, 2024, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit on April 30, 2024. Justice Na’abba, also held as prayed, stopped State Working Committee APC Kano from interfering with the legally and validly considered decision of executives of Ganduje ward, essentially on action endorsed by a two-thirds majority of the executives as provided by the party constitution. The ex parte order read,, “An order is hereby granted directing all parties in the suit APC (first), APC National Working Committee (second), Kano State Working Committee APC (third), Dr. Abdullah Umar Ganduje (fourth), to maintain status quo ante belum as of April 15, 2024.   ”The order thereby restraining the first respondent (APC) from recognising the fourth respondent (Ganduje) as a member of APC and prohibiting the fourth respondent (Ganduje) from presiding over any affairs of the NWC and restraining the state Working Committee from interfering with the legally and validly decision of the ward executives of Ganduje ward. “That the fourth respondent (Ganduje) is prohibited from parading himself as a member of APC or doing any act that may portray him or seem to be a member of APC pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.” Nine members of the Ganduje ward proclaimed the suspension of the National Chairman of the APC over the allegation of corruption slammed on him by the Kano State Government. The nine APC executives said they were prompted to act following a petition written by one Ja’afaru Adamu, a member of the APC from the National Chairman’s polling unit. In the petition, Adamu complained over allegations of corruption charges against the former governor just as he urged the ward leaders to investigate the matter to redeem the dented image of the party and the implication on President Bola Tinubu’s fight against corruption. Although the chairman and secretary of the ward failed to act on the petition filed on April 8, 2024, nine members of the executives, led by the legal adviser, acted upon the petition, a decision that led to Ganduje’s suspension.

45 Persons Die As Strange Disease Hits Kano Community

About 45 persons have reportedly lost their lives due to an outbreak of a mysterious illness in Gundutse village, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State. It was gathered that the victims, mostly women, children, and elderly individuals, exhibited symptoms such as malaria, diarrhoea, and vomiting. Dinosaurs Spine at Hang Dong, Ta Xua, Son La seen from above Residents expressed concerns about the sudden increase in deaths over the past two weeks, initially attributing them to common illnesses. However, the situation became alarming when the community started burying five people daily, indicating a more significant health crisis. Nigeria’s FX reserves dip by over $2bn in one month, lowest in 6 years Tough time to be entrepreneur in Nigeria Abu Sani, a resident who lost two children, said his family initially thought it was malaria affecting his two-year-old son, who sadly passed away despite medical intervention. He said a week later, another family member fell unconsciously and also succumbed to the illness before reaching the hospital. Another resident, Hajara Abubakar, who took her son to a local clinic for treatment, said, “For over two weeks now, people have been dying here from an illness we are yet to know. So far, I know of 40 people who have died.” Health officials at the Gundutse clinic told our reporter during a visit that 20 deaths had so far been documented. One of the health workers at the clinic, who preferred anonymity, said they had already reported the incident to the state’s Ministry of Health and that water and blood samples had been collected for laboratory analyses to determine the exact cause of the outbreak. While the residents await the test results, they speculate that poor environmental hygiene in Gundutse village could be a contributing factor. As a precautionary measure, the local government council closed one borehole, prompting residents to use well water instead. The interim chairman of Kura Local Government Council, Yahaya Tijjani Kura, acknowledged the illness but disputed the death toll, stating that only three children had died. However, the councillor representing Gundutse ward, Dauda Abdulhamid Gundutse, mentioned three to five deaths of children and ongoing treatments for others affected. Despite conflicting reports, a visit by our correspondent to the cemetery in the company of some locals revealed 35 fresh graves, including six for children, contradicting the lower figures provided by local authorities. When contacted, the Kano State Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said he was yet to receive official reports from the local government health officers but added that the investigation was ongoing to ascertain the real cause of the deaths.

Tinubu eyes $4bn annual savings from reduced bureaucracies

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday said Nigeria stands to benefit about $2.7bn annually by implementing the Single Window Project. He also noted that the project will save the country at least $4bn lost annually to complex bureaucracies and corruption hindering its trade efficiency. Tinubu revealed this when he inaugurated a new digital trade compliance initiative, code-named the National Single Window project at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja. The Single Window project is a cross-government website which will facilitate trade by offering a single portal for Nigerian and international trade actors to access a full range of resources and standardised services from different Nigerian agencies. The initiative, Tinubu said, would expedite cargo movement and optimise inter-African trade, thereby facilitating $2.7bn worth of annual paperless trade. While noting that the economy can no longer stomach $4bn annual losses, the Nigerian leader directed the Presidential Steering Committee on the National Single Window Project to “Dismantle all block webs” in the way of trade efficiency. This way, Nigeria would join the ranks of Singapore, Korea, Kenya and Saudi Arabia which have experienced significant improvement in trade efficiency after implementing a single window system, the president argued. He affirmed, “We cannot afford to lose an estimated $4bn annually to red tape, bureaucracy, delays and corruption at our ports. “The benefits of this initiative are immense. The paperless trade alone is estimated to bring an annual economic benefit of around $2.7bn US dollars. “Countries like Singapore, Korea, Kenya and Saudi Arabia have already seen significant improvement in trade efficiency after implementing Single Window Systems. It is time for Nigeria to join their ranks and reap the reward of a streamlined, decentralised trade process.” Tinubu lamented that although Nigeria has immense potential – having been blessed with people of resilience, creativity, and unwavering spirit of enterprise – “for far too long, our economic growth has been hindered by the complexities and inefficiencies in our trade processes.” “Today, we say that there should be no more,” he assured. He described the national single window as a game changer that will revolutionise the conduct of trade in the country, “by simplifying government trade compliance through a digital platform, we will unlock the doors to economic prosperity and all other opportunities.” The President also noted that the National Single Window will prevent revenue leakage and facilitate effective trade. “By doing so, we will create a more transparent, secure and business-friendly environment that will attract investment and spur economic growth,” he added. He assured the newly inaugurated steering committee of his full support admitting that implementing the National Single Window “will not be an overnight process.” “It requires dedication, collaboration and a phased approach. But I assure you, my fellow brothers and sisters, that we are fully committed to seeing this project through. “We will work tirelessly to ensure its success by engaging all partner agencies and stakeholders to create a system that works for every one of us,” Tinubu stated. The President charged the committee to get rid of any obstacles in their way, expressing his readiness to listen to new ideas to make the initiative succeed. “Dismantle all block webs along your way. I will be ready to listen to conversations, your discoveries, to any problem-solving areas that will make the Single Window a big success,” he remarked. Tinubu who serves as the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State argued that the Single Window Project transcends Nigeria. Therefore, by linking its system with those of other African nations, “we will expedite cargo movement and optimise inter-Africa trade,” he said. He called on all Nigerians to embrace the initiative with open arms appealing, “Let us work together as one nation to make the National Single Window a resounding success.” “This initiative is a testament to our commitment to regional integration and our belief in the power of collaboration. “Let us show the world that Nigeria is ready to take its rightful place as one of the leaders in global trade,” the President urged. Briefing State House correspondents afterwards, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Bello Koko, affirmed that imports would be cleared at all seaports within 24 hours, even though it takes 72 hours in neighbouring countries. Koko said the Single Window initiative will cut back the amount of paperwork involved in transactions for import and export as the relevant government agencies will now share information through a unified platform. “So, for clearance, the target is 24 hours. Of course, we know what is obtainable in neighbouring countries, it’s 48 to 72, but the target is actually 24 hours,” he asserted. Koko said key shipment details such as type, year of manufacture, Form M, and cargo weight, among others will be unified for seamless sharing across government agencies. He explained, “So, we are trying to unify this information in such a way that you fill as little as possible and all related government agencies that are in the value-chain of import or export processing, should be able to pick the information they need from there. So, you can see the picture here. We are reducing the current numbers. “The second thing is it’s not going to be printed. So, the efficiency it brings here is that you can fill it in your bedroom and your offices. “Shipping lines, freight forwarders, Nigerian Customs, NPA and so on should be able to process your requests, whether it’s in terms of import or export. That is the target.” Mr. Tola Fakolade is the head of the project secretariat. Members include representatives of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Marine and Blue Economy, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, the federal Inland Revenue Service, the Nigerian Customs service and representatives of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority. Others are representative of the Central Bank of Nigeria, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Nigerian Maritime Administration on Safety Agency, Nigerian Ports Authority and Presidential Enabling

Dangote refinery slashes diesel price to N1,000 per litre

The Dangote refinery says it has reduced the price of automotive gas oil (AGO), also known as diesel, to N1,000 per litre. According to a statement on Tuesday by the refinery, the price of the product was dropped from N1,200 per litre. “In an unprecedented move, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced further reduction of the price of diesel to from 1200 to 1,000 naira per litre,” Dangote refinery said. “While rolling out the products, the refinery supplied at a substantially reduced price of N1,200 per litre three weeks ago, representing over 30 per cent reduction from the previous market price of about N1,600 per litre. “This significant reduction in the price of diesel, at Dangote Petroleum Refinery, is expected to positively affect all the spheres of the economy and ultimately reduce the high inflation rate in the country.” The development comes days after Dangote refinery fixed the minimum volume of diesel that can be purchased by oil marketers at one million litres. The 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity refinery was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2023. Subsequently, the plant commenced operations with the production of diesel and aviation fuel on January 12 — after receiving six shipments of crude from oil marketers.

28 Killed In Fresh Attack On Benue Community

At least 28 people including six personnel of Benue State Community Volunteer Guards (BSCVG) have been reportedly killed by armed invaders in Gyaruwa axis of Gwer West Local Government Area, Benue State. Locals said that the attack occurred from Saturday to Monday during which the villagers were also chased out of their abodes in Tse-Kperyisa, Tse-Adaa and Tse-Shiver communities. They explained that the six security personnel were killed while escorting some mourners to bury their dead on Saturday and that by Sunday night, the attackers had killed 16 people while another six were killed along Adoka-Naka Road in Gwer West LGA. The villagers listed names of those killed in Tse-Kperyisa as: Atayugh Aondona, Atayugh Monday, Atayugh Friday, Atibee Kperyisa, Atibee Catherine, Anande Tete, Atsaga Ayange, Atsaga John Yeye, Oraduen Aondosoo and Ordem Msuega. Others killed in Tse-Adaa include: Msanhe Orgbo, Ayageor Ankina while in Tse-Shiver, Gor Kyor and Ormba Gbem were among those killed on Sunday night. It was learnt that two other victims were rescued, but later died in a hospital. The villagers said the slain bodies had been buried including that of one Atayugh Aondona who was beheaded and his head taken away by his assailants. Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Henry Agba, told journalists in Makurdi that the attack started on Saturday with the killing of six security personnel of Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards. Agba said, “They escorted some families to go and bury their loved ones and on their way back, they were ambushed and six of them were killed. Then on Sunday night around 11pm, they attacked a community in Gyaruwa and 14 were killed instantly. “On Monday, they attacked another village on Naka-Adoka road and killed people. Six dead bodies have already been recovered. So many people were injured and are in different hospitals in the LGA. “The Sunday attack happened at 12 midnight while that of yesterday (Monday) was during the morning rainfall. Alexander Anshungu (rtd.), confirmed 16 people were killed in the Gyaruwa vicinity where he visited for on-the-spot assessment of the Sunday attack. Anshungu added that the attackers used machetes in killing their victims in a most gruesome manner, adding that the Gyaruwa community had been deserted. Officials of the Volunteer Guards were however yet to react to the killing of their personnel at the time of filing this report as its Public Relations Officer promised to revert with details. Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benúe Command, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed to journalists that she received the report of 10 deaths from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the affected area.

Kaduna Assembly To Probe Loans Obtained Under El-Rufai

The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Tuesday set up a 13-man committee to probe financial dealings, loans, grants and other project implementations from 2015-2023 under former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s tenure. The House also mandated the committee to invite notable personalities that served during the period, including contractors, to explain how the loans and grants received during the period under review were spent. Chairman House Committee on Public Accounts, who is also the Deputy Minority Whip, Honourable Mugu Yusuf, moved the motion, saying the public needed to know what actually happened during that period. According to him, he moved the motion following the horrific comment made by the state governor, Uba Sani, on March 28, 2024, on the financial situation of the state. “People cast aspersions on the governor and the office, which is unfair. So as chairman House committee on Public Account committee whose responsibility is to ensure accountability and transparency, particularly on government funds in a state I’m serving as a legislature, I was moved by that in conjunction with other colleagues who feel the same. “I feel there is nobody better than me to move the motion intended to clarify if the governor is wrong for telling the reality and position of the state,” he said. He also said statistics showed that Kaduna debt profile was second next to Lagos out of the 36 states. He said if a state reached a position where payment of salary became a problem, then such a situation was a serious matter.   He said the committee has a month to submit its report to the House leadership. The chairman House Committee on Information, Henry Marah Zachariah, while briefing the media shortly after the sitting, said the House was not accusing anybody of wrongdoing, but was only interested in knowing how the loans and grants collected during the last administration were spent. He also said whoever refused to honour the invitation, the law would be used to summon them before the committee to explain what actually happened. He said all those invited are expected to bring along their documents to the committee to defend themselves.

Despite persistent increases, IMF projects decline in Nigeria’s inflation to 26%

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Nigeria’s inflationary pressure to ease to 26 percent this year. The fund spoke on Nigeria’s economic growth trajectory while presenting global projections from its World Economic Outlook at a news conference in Washington DC on Tuesday. Inflation has remained a major challenge for Nigerians and continues to worsen the operations of businesses in the country. To tame the inflationary uptick, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had raised the interest rate by 400 basis points (bps) — the largest in recent years — to 22.75 percent on February 27. The regulator further jacked up the monetary policy rate (MPR) by an additional 200 basis to 24.75 percent. Still, inflation has continued to soar in Nigeria, extending increases seen between 2022 and 2023 to 33.20 percent in March — up from 31.70 percent in February. However, speaking during the press conference, Daniel Leigh, division chief of the research department at IMF, said inflation would drop in Nigeria alongside global inflationary pressures estimated to decline from 2.8 percent at the end of 2024 to 2.4 percent at the end of 2025. “Growth in Nigeria steady, but actually rising this year from 2.9 percent last year to 3.3 percent this year,” Leigh said. “We’ve seen expansion from the recovery in the oil sector with a better security situation, and also improved agriculture, benefiting from the better weather conditions and the introduction of dry season farming. “So, there’s a broad-based increase also in the financial sector in the IT sector. Inflation Yes, it has increased. Part of this reflects the reforms in the exchange rate. So this explains also why we revised our inflation projection for this year at 26%. “But with the tight monetary policies and the significant interest rate increases during February and March, we see inflation declining to 23% next year and then 18% in 2026. So in the right direction.” The lender also asked central banks across the world to ensure that inflation is durably heading back to target.
