NIMC warns of websites harvesting data of Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against the activities of some unauthorised websites harvesting people’s data The websites are idfinder.com.ng, Verify.ng, championtech.com.ng, trustyonline.com, and anyverify.com. The NIMC gave the warning in a statement signed by Kayode Adegoke, its head of corporate communications, on Saturday. On June 20, Paradigm Initiative, a pan-African social enterprise, raised alarm over its discovery of the sale of national identification numbers (NINs), bank verification numbers (BVNs), and other personal data of Nigerians on a website for as low as N100. According to the organisation, a website known as ‘AnyVerify.com.ng’ was discovered to be involved in the commercial distribution of personal and private data of Nigerians. Paradigm Initiative added that several unauthorised websites are claiming to hold and provide access to sensitive personal and financial data of Nigerian citizens “for as little as 100 Naira”. “This alarming development presents a major breach of the fundamental rights to privacy, a breach of data privacy rights, and poses significant risks to individuals and the national economy,” the firm said. Reacting to the report, the commission said AnyVerify.com.ng and other aforementioned websites are data harvesters and unauthorised to access or manage sensitive data. The agency also denied the exposure of sensitive data of Nigerians “as alleged and reported”. “The commission, at this moment, assures the public that the data of Nigerians has not been compromised, and the Commission have not authorised any website or entity to sell or misuse the National Identification Number (NIN) amongst all the identities stated in the report,” NIMC said. “NIMC urges the public to disregard any claims or services these websites offer and should not give their data as they are potentially fraudulent and data provided by the public on such websites are gathered and stored to build the data services they illegally provide. “Consequently, the public should know that the commission has taken robust measures to safeguard the nation’s database from cyber threats- a secure, world-class, full-proof database is in place. “The commission’s infrastructure meets the stringent ISO 27001:2013 information security management system standard, with annual recertification and strict compliance with the Nigerian Data Protection Law.” NIMC also advised Nigerians to avoid giving their data to unauthorised and phishing sites, stressing that licensed partners or vendors are not authorised to scan or store NIN slips but to verify them through approved channels. “This poses the danger of data harvesting and comprises individual data,” the commission added. The Commission reaffirms its commitment to upholding ethical standards in data protection in line with federal government directives and data privacy regulations.” NIMC also said it is currently working closely with security operatives to apprehend elements masquerading as online vendors, and make them face the full wrath of the law. The agency urged the public to remain vigilant against false information and rely on verified sources for accurate updates.

For taking photos of cattle’, police beat up journalist

Gabriel Idibia, a journalist with the Daily Times, was reportedly brutalised for “taking pictures of cattle shepherded by police”. Idibia was said to have taken the pictures along Kachia expressway in Kaduna state, and was subsequently arrested on June 11. In a statement on Saturday, the Coalition for Whistleblowers Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) condemned the arrest, adding that Idibia was carrying out his constitutional duty. “Mr. Gabriel Idibia in a chat with the Centre for Journalism, Innovation and Development (CJID) confirmed that he was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) police station, Gabasawa, while taking pictures of a large herd of cattle being shepherded by the police on Kachia expressway, a usually busy road in the state,” the statement reads. “He was thereafter taken into custody and brutally beaten up. Mr Idibia insists that the physical torture severely affected his eyes, forcing him to access eye treatment. “His allegations have been corroborated by media reports and an eyewitness that was arrested along with him. “Before his arbitrary arrest, Mr Idibia had presented his I.D card to the police officers to identify himself as a journalist trying to cover the blockage of the Kachia expressway by the herd of cattle led by the same policemen. “He was however denied an audience by the belligerent officers who asked him to leave the scene of the incident for no reason. “The police officers thereafter seized his mobile phone and identity card when Mr. Idibia tried to take a picture of the road blockage and took him to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) police station, Gabasawa where he was detained from morning till late in the evening.” The coalition said Idibia narrated how the policemen forced him to write a statement without access to his lawyers or colleagues. “On getting to the police station, one of the officers who brought me to the station punched me in the face, and hit one of my eyes, leaving me almost blinded,” the statement quoted Idibia as saying. Mansir Hassan, spokesperson of the Kaduna police command, said he saw no sign of assault on the journalist. “He was eventually granted bail on self recognition,” Hassan was quoted as saying. The coalition asked Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted into the incident. CWPPF also demanded punishment for any officer found culpable.

Dekor Not Rivers Caucus Leader but Abiante, Say Ethnic Youth Leaders

Apex sociocultural youth groups known as Ethnic Youth Leaders has said that Hon. Dumnamene Dekor is not the leader of Rivers State Caucus in the House of Representatives but Hon. Dagomie Abiante. The youth group clarification was in reaction to a statement by Dekor who in the statement claimed to be leader of Rivers State reps Caucus and warning Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere to desist from what he described as misleading press briefings on the ongoing disagreement between the governor of Rivers State, Similanayi Fubara and the House of Assembly, and latterly, former Local Government Chairmen. The ethnic youth leaders in a statement signed by Director South South Region Comrade Hart Israel urged the leadership of the House of Representatives to suspend Dekor for impersonation, claiming a position that wasn’t his. The group appealed to Hon. Ugochinyere not to dignify dekor with a response, saying that his rantings are just weak effort to please Wike. The group said, “We are calling on the leadership of the House of Representatives to suspend Dekor for impersonation, claiming a position that wasn’t his. Dekor in a statement yesterday claimed to be leader of Rivers State reps Caucus and warned Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere to desist from what he described as misleading press briefings on the ongoing disagreement between the governor of Rivers State, Similanayi Fubara and the House of Assembly, and latterly, former Local Government Chairmen. “It’s actually laughable first of that Hon. Dekor impersonated Abiante and lied about a meeting that never held. He should be ashamed highlighting that Ugochinyere is not from Rivers State. Is he not ashamed that another citizen is doing a job he’s supposed to be doing to end the crisis in his state. Dekor’s statement is outright false, mischievous, malicious and undeserving of a member of the House of Representatives. We urge Hon. Ugochinyere not to dignify dekor with a response as he’s only trying to please his master.”
