Thailand approves same-s3x marriage

Thailand’s Senate has given final approval to a bill legalising same-s3x marriage, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to do so. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor with 130 senators supporting the bill, four opposing it, and 18 abstaining. The legislation will now go to King Maha Vajiralongkorn for royal assent, after which it will be published in the Royal Gazette and come into effect 120 days later. Opinion polls have shown strong public support for same-s3x marriage, and many Thai people have been waiting eagerly for the law to change. The passage of the bill is a significant milestone for Thailand and for the LGBTQ community in Asia. It follows similar moves in Taiwan and Nepal, and adds to the growing momentum for marriage equality around the world. Celebrations are planned in Bangkok and other cities, and many same-s3x couples are already making plans to tie the knot once the law comes into effect

Refrigerating cooked food for more than three days dangerous – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged Nigerians to refrain from storing cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days. According to the agency, cooked food stored in the refrigerator for days is susceptible to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, key agents of foodborne diseases that can lead to death. Food safety incidents are situations where there is a potential or confirmed health risk associated with food consumption. A food incident can happen, for example, due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, or natural events. NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye tasked all stakeholders in the food supply chain to take deliberate actions to institute a food safety culture in their operations to mitigate the food hazards and risks that could compromise food safety. The DG spoke at the 2024 World Food Safety Day with the theme: ‘Food Safety: Prepare for the unexpected,’ where she emphasised that food safety is a collective responsibility, and the need for everyone, from producers to consumers, to play their part to ensure that the food we eat is safe. According to the DG in a statement by the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola on Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that globally, one in 10 people fall ill, and 420,000 die each year due to consuming contaminated food. This results in the loss of 33 million healthy life years, with children under five and other vulnerable groups in poorer regions being disproportionately affected. In developing countries, about $110 billion is lost every year on medical expenses due to unsafe food. Adeyeye, who noted that food safety is not only important for public health but a sine qua non for economic development and food security, emphasised that everybody has a role to play from the farm to the table to ensure that the food we consume is safe and will not cause damage to our health. She added that for World Food Safety Day 2024, WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are asking all stakeholders along the food supply chain if they are prepared to address unexpected threats to food safety in an increasingly interconnected and interlinked global food supply. According to her, while being ready to manage food safety incidents requires dedicated efforts from policymakers, food safety authorities, farmers, and food business operators, consumers can also play a very active role. She, however, restated that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has developed programmes for the elimination, eradication, prevention, and control of diseases, which include the National Integrated Guidelines for Foodborne Disease Surveillance and Response, useful for preparedness and rapid response to emerging and re-emerging foodborne diseases. She challenged all the stakeholders, from regulatory officers, experts, producers, processors, distributors, retailers, restaurant outlets, and consumers, to consider if they are indeed prepared for the unexpected. “Let us all stay true to the statements ‘food safety is everyone’s business and food safety is a shared responsibility’ as we celebrate this year’s World Food Safety Day. “Working together, we will continue to strengthen our food safety system, ensuring its resilience, robustness, and preparedness for the unexpected,” she added.

‘Nigeria spends $600m annually on palm oil importation’

The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria (NPPAN) has revealed that Nigeria spends $600 million annually on palm oil importation. This was stated by Mr Alphonsus Inyang, the National President of the association, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja. Inyang criticised these expenses as detrimental to national development, suggesting that the funds could be better utilised within the economy if the palm oil sub-sector received adequate attention from successive governments. He highlighted Nigeria’s historical self-sufficiency in palm oil production, contrasting it with the current situation where a substantial portion of the country’s palm oil is imported. “In the 60s, Nigeria was the leading global producer and exporter of palm oil, controlling over 60 per cent of the world’s supply,” Inyang said. “Now, more than 50 per cent of our consumption is met through imports.” Currently, Nigeria ranks fifth among palm oil-producing countries, trailing Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Colombia. Inyang warned that Nigeria might lose this position to smaller countries investing heavily in the sector. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Nigeria produces 1.4 million metric tons of palm oil annually, accounting for 1.5 per cent of the world’s total output. This production level is significantly lower than the leading producers: Indonesia at 50 million metric tons, Malaysia at 19 million metric tons, Thailand at 3.28 million metric tons, and Colombia at 1.9 million metric tons. Inyang attributed Nigeria’s challenges to the neglect of the sector by past governments. He pointed out that while Nigeria is now the largest consumer of palm oil in Africa, with an annual consumption of approximately three million metric tons, domestic production remains below 1.4 million metric tons, creating a deficit of over 1.6 million metric tons. To address this shortfall, Inyang urged the government, specifically the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, to support NPPAN members with essential resources. “Our members can plant up to 250,000 hectares per year through the association’s National Oil Palm Strategy Development Plan. All we need are inputs,” he said. “The government does not need to provide and develop land for us. We need seedlings, fertilisers, logistics, and implements to close this gap within four years. “This will also create new millionaires in 28 states of the federation.”
