Cholera death toll hits 30 as 1,141 hospitalised

The National Biosafety Management Agency has called on the general public to exercise caution over the recent cholera outbreak in some states across Nigeria. Head, Information and Communications for NBMA, Mrs Gloria Ogbaki, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, quoted the Director- General, NBMA, Dr Agnes Asagbra, as saying there was need for carefulness. “Asagbra said Nigerians must exercise caution as Nigeria records 30 deaths and 1,141 suspected cases from the disease. “As we approach the festive period of the Salah celebrations, it is of utmost importance that we collectively prioritise the health and safety of our communities. “Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by the ingestion of contaminated food or water, has been reported in Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos States.’’ Asagbra said NBMA, in collaboration with health authorities, was actively monitoring the situation and implementing measures to contain the spread of the disease. She also called on Nigerians to imbibe various hygiene practices such as boiling drinking water or using certified water purification methods. According to her, there is need to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating or preparing food. The Director-General also urged Nigerians to always wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet, cook food thoroughly and consume it while it was hot. She advised that Nigerians avoid raw foods, such as fruits and vegetables unless they could be peeled or washed with safe water and to always keep the environment clean and dispose waste properly to prevent contamination. She said, “NBMA urges all Nigerians to be vigilant and adhere to these hygiene practices to protect themselves and their loved ones from cholera.” She called on Nigerians to be alert and report any case of cholera to the nearest hospital.

Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected South African president

South Africa’s parliament has re-elected Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s president following a landmark coalition deal between the governing African National Congress (ANC) and opposition parties. The new government of national unity combines Mr Ramaphosa’s ANC, the centre-right Democratic Alliance (DA) and smaller parties. In his victory speech, Mr Ramaphosa hailed the new coalition, and said voters expected the leaders to “to act and to work together for the good of everyone in our country”. The agreement was hashed out on a day of high political drama, which saw the National Assembly sitting late into the evening for votes to confirm who would hold power in the new administration. Earlier, a deal was struck following weeks of speculation about whom the ANC would partner with after losing its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years in last month’s elections. It got 40% of the vote, while the DA came second with 22%. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula called the coalition deal a “remarkable step”. It meant Mr Ramaphosa – who replaced Jacob Zuma as both president and ANC leader following a bitter power struggle in 2018 – was able to retain power. The next step is for Mr Ramaphosa to allocate cabinet positions, which will include members of the DA. The multi-party deal does not involve two ANC breakaway parties, and they will probably benefit if it fails to deliver the economic improvements demanded by voters.

Police Allege Irregularities, Corruption In Constables Recruitment

The Nigeria Police Force has raised an alarm over alleged irregularities and corruption regarding the recently released names of successful candidates by the Police Service Commission in the 2022/23 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise.   A statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the list released on the Police Service Commission portal is full of several names of successful candidates who did not even apply and therefore did not take part in the recruitment exercise.   According to the statement, the published list contains several names of candidates who failed either the Computer Based Test (CBT) or the physical screening exercise or both.   This includes those who made it to the last stage of the exercise but were disqualified having been found Medically unfit through the standardised medical test but who also made the list of successful candidates as published by the Police Service Commission.   The statement adds that, most worrisome is the allegation of financial dealings and corrupt practices leading to the outcome where unqualified and untrainable individuals have been shortlisted.

26 Pro Wike lawmakers remain sacked, appeal court rules

Sacked Pro-Wike Rivers State assembly Lawmakers have faced another setback as appeal court has rejected their request to stay execution of the order barring them from parading as Lawmakers after their sack. The Court of Appeal, Port-Harcourt at a virtual hearing today via Zoom gave its Ruling on two Motions filed by Martins Amaewhule and the other defected lawmakers challenging the order of injunction granted by the Rivers State High Court restraining them from acting as lawmakers. The Court in Ruling on the first Motion, granted the Appellants’ prayers for leave to compile and transmit the Records of Appeal, deeming the Appellants’ Brief of Argument as filed, accelerated hearing and a stay of further proceedings at the High Court. The Court of Appeal however refused to grant the prayer for stay of execution and setting aside the interim order of the Lower Court as there is a presumption of correctness of an order of a Court. It held that granting same would be tantamount to determining the appeal at this stage. The Court went on to order that the present status quo should be maintained pending the hearing of the Appeal. Ruling on the 2nd Motion which was brought to set aside the interlocutory injunction of the Lower Court, the Court of Appeal also refuse the prayer, and reiterated that the ‘present’ status quo should be maintained. The Respondents are to filed their Briefs within 72 hours of being served. The case has been adjourned to 20/6/24 for Hearing of the Appeal. Reacting to the court judgement, the Spokesperson of opposition lawmakers known as the G60, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere hailed the judiciary, saying that the judgement was in the interest of democracy and justice. He said the ruling will help maintain peace, stability and stop the endless attempt by sacked Lawmakers to undermine democracy. He added that the ruling is a good defeat to the several attempt to rape democracy norms.

UK records sharp decline in migration of students, foreign workers

The number of foreign workers and students moving to the United Kingdom has plummeted by nearly 30 per cent this year, according to new figures released by the Home Office. The drop, from 121,000 to 85,200 in the first five months of this year, aligns with both the Conservative and Labour parties’ promises to reduce net migration. This marks the largest decline since the pandemic, with skilled workers, students, and health and care visa holders comprising the bulk of migration to the UK. These three groups, along with their dependents, accounted for a total of 1.13 million visas issued last year. The Telegraph reports that the decline is largely attributed to measures implemented by the government, including restrictions on foreign workers and students bringing dependants, increased salary thresholds for skilled workers, and curbs on the shortage of occupation visa schemes. According to the data, net migration stands at 685,000 for the year ending December 2023, down from a record high of 764,000 in the previous year. The Conservative government aims to reduce immigration by 300,000, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowing to “halve” migration and reduce it further each year if re-elected.   Labour’s manifesto also pledges to reduce net migration, although the party has not specified a target or timeline. The party proposes to link training to immigration, requiring sectors applying for foreign worker visas to first train British citizens. Home Secretary James Cleverly attributed the decline to his actions, stating, “I took action to drive down legal migration. “Data released this week show visa applications have dropped 30 per cent amongst key routes. Labour opposed these actions at every opportunity. If you want to reduce migration, vote Conservative on 4th July,” he said in a tweet on his X handle. The Migration Advisory Committee chairman, Prof Brian Bell, believes the Prime Minister has a “fighting chance” of reducing net migration to pre-pandemic levels by the end of this year. The figures indicate a significant drop in visa applications across various categories, including a 25.4 per cent overall decrease in visas for foreign workers, students, and their dependants. The number of dependents brought in by students fell by nearly 80 per cent, while health and care worker visa applications decreased by 75.6 per cent. This development comes ahead of the July 4 election, with immigration policy playing a crucial role in the campaigns of both major parties.
