Chief of Defence staff accuses Finland of shielding Simon Ekpa, calls for his arrest

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has accused Finland of shielding the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra Simon Ekpa. Musa made this known during a special broadcast on Channels Television to mark Nigeria’s 25th Democracy Day in Abuja. Musa called for Ekpa’s arrest and prosecution, citing his harmful statements and activities in the South-East region. He questioned the European Union’s commitment to democracy in Nigeria, given their inaction on this issue. Musa emphasised the need for decisive action, including diplomatic efforts, to address the threat posed by Ekpa.   He said, “We have repeatedly complained about the issue of Simon Ekpa. He is in Finland and the Finnish Government is giving him all the support and he is doing what he is doing.” “The comments he is making, people are being killed and nothing is being done. This is democracy. If the European Union is supporting democracy and this is happening and they are not taking action, then they don’t mean well for Nigeria. “We have said that in clear terms. We need to diplomatically find means of getting him out of whatever it is that he is doing. He must be arrested, he must be prosecuted. “Look at it from the other way, assuming he is in Nigeria, he is doing that to the Finnish government, you think the European Union will allow that to happen? They definitely will not

N80bn fraud: EFCC accuses colleagues, others of shielding Yahaya Bello

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Wednesday, said ex-Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, who is accused of N80.2bn fraud, had ridiculed the Nigerian justice system by failing to present himself for trial in court. The EFCC acting Zonal Director, Benin Zonal Command, Mr Effa Okim, stated this during a familiarisation visit to the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Asaba, Delta State capital. The EFCC is having a running legal battle with Bello over alleged N80.2bn fraud. Following a failed attempt to arrest him and his repeated absence from court for his arraignment, the EFCC declared Bello wanted, while the Nigerian Immigration also placed the governor on a watchlist. When asked on Wednesday why the EFCC had yet to arrest Bello weeks after he was declared wanted, an irate Okim claimed that the ex-governor was being shielded by the system. “This is the last question I expected because the shame is on all of us. Is that a question I should answer alone? It’s not me, it is the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the EFCC zonal director said. “That politically-exposed Yahaya Bello, whose crime has been traced to him by allegation and has been invited by EFCC to come and explain, and for months he is acting drama and we are all here wanting to ask questions! The shame is our own shame! “Can’t we catch him? We can, but do we go all out to catch him? Do we need to do that when he has his masters? Can’t they call him and tell him, ‘You are disgracing Nigeria’? What are you telling the world? Tell him to go and explain himself like others have done.   “Where are the ministers? Where are Yahaya Bello’s colleagues, even in his hiding? So, Nigerians can’t tell him ‘This is not fair, go and report; they are not going to kill you’? But people are still eating and dining with him.” Okim said beyond legality, there was a moral aspect of the case. “Where has morality gone before legality that we can’t summon that man and tell him to go and report himself to the EFCC? Some persons are writing, supporting him, while some are criticizing the commission. “The problem is our own problem that borders on Nigeria’s image. Our children are watching their parents behave like children. “To me, the truth has vanished. Even in Animal Farm, this will not happen, that a man who was part of the system that was a custodian of our culture, rules and laws can behave like this and you are asking questions. “The media should come out for the first time to harmonise, criticise that action and forget about prosecution but tell him to make himself available; thereafter we know what to do.” Okim said the criminal justice system had been ridiculed by the actions of Bello, “And because we respect the law, we want to go by the process, we are inhibited that does not make us weak.” The Chairman, NUJ Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, assured the commission the support of journalists in the state.

Perm sec: My subordinate accused me of sexual harassment because I refused to pay her bills

Ibrahim Lamuwa, the permanent secretary of the federal ministry of foreign affairs, says he is being accused of sexual harassment by Simisola Fajemirokun-Ajayi, an official of the ministry, because he refused her demands. Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, had notified Folasade Yemi-Esan, the head of service of the federation (HoS), of the allegation. In a letter to Yemi-Esan, the minister said it was necessary to communicate the development to her following the “gravity of the matter” after Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, wrote a petition to him. However, in response to the allegation, Lamuwa said his failure to pay Ajayi’s bills on an official trip to Davos and refusal to grant her access to policy files and financial records of the ministry were the reasons why she accused him of sexual harassment.   The permanent secretary said he has never sexually harassed her but has maintained a professional relationship with all his subordinates. “I have served for nine years cumulatively in the State House, in the Office of the Vice President, Chief of Staff to the President, and the exalted Office of the President at various times under Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, Mr. David Edevbie, Amb. Abdullahi Gwary, and lastly, Amb. Lawal Kazaure,” Lamuwa’s leaked response reads. “I received three letters of commendation at various times from the State House for meritorious service. “On allegations of female directors being harassed, I have never had any incident with any female director in any hotel room, nor have I ever removed any female officers’ names from trips or postings because they refused to comply with any sexual demands. “No four women or any number could have shared any alleged ordeal with me with her, as no such incidents have happened in the past, and it is untrue that any such common knowledge exists in the Ministry, as there is no basis for it. “From the foregoing, I believe Mrs. Simisola O. Fajemirokun-Ajayi’s action might not be unconnected with my failure to pay her Davos bills or give her access to the Ministry’s policy files and financial records. “For example, on 12th January, 2023, while in Davos, on a WhatsApp chat, she tried to know what I and the DFA were doing about the payment of the outstanding Nigerian Mission’s 1st Semester Allocation of about N12,957,103,477, claiming to know the Minister has spoken to the CBN Governor on the issue. “In my response, I told her that Missions’ funding should not concern her, as it was being handled at the highest level. Her response was ‘Noted Sir. As directed by the Hon. Minister sir, does it concern Me?’. I wrote back to say, ‘I sorted that out with the HMFA yesterday’. And she said ‘thank you’. I knew she was angry with me about that. “It is clear that there are two issues that have been worrying Mrs. Simisola O. Fajemirokun-Ajayi and were therefore waiting for any opportunity to get back at me.” The permanent secretary added that they had exchanged jokes on many occasions in the presence of other people.

Blackout in North-East as vandals attack newly rebuilt power towers

Vandals have again attacked power transmission towers taking electricity to the northeast of Nigeria, leaving Maiduguri and its environs in darkness. The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, in a statement on Wednesday disclosed that two of its towers, T193 and T194, along the Damaturu -Maiduguri 330kV Single Circuit Transmission Line have again been destroyed by vandals.   TCN said it believes that the attack happened at about 10:15pm, Tuesday night, “when the 150MVA power transformer at Molai Substation tripped at the same time as the 330kV transmission line supplying bulk power to Maiduguri from Damaturu Transmission Substation”. The company explained that “after the line tripping, efforts were made by TCN engineers to close the Mulai – Damaturu line to enable bulk transmission of electricity, which failed repeatedly. Early Today, however, TCN lines engineers along with security operatives patrolled the line and discovered that towers 193 and 194 along the 330kV transmission line were brought down using an explosive device, whose fragments are scattered at the site of the incident. “The area affected by this incident is Maiduguri and its environs”. Recall that on the 28th of December, 2023, towers T193, T194 and T195, were destroyed on 28th December, 2023 using similar improvised Explosives IEDs. “Two out of the towers in question are the towers affected by yesterday’s vandalism attack, which were rebuilt after that incident”, it added. TCN said it is currently assessing the situation with the view to deciding on the best approach to ensuring the temporary restoration of the power supply while a contractor is mobilized to rebuild the two transmission towers. “We will continue to do everything possible with the assistance of security operatives to protect our transmission towers and we are also calling upon the government and well-meaning Nigerians to join in the fight against the destruction of our collective national assets”.

Salihu Lukman resigns from APC

Salihu Lukman, a former vice-chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the north-west, has resigned as a member of the ruling party. Last year, Lukman resigned from his position as a member of the national working committee (NWC) of the APC. He said, “the party is completely at variance with the founding vision of forming a progressive party”. Before this, he had also resigned as the director-general of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) in 2022.   In a statement on Wednesday, Lukman said his membership in the APC has been rendered useless. He noted that his decision was based on the lack of internal democracy and the inability of the leadership of the APC to allow reforms within the party. “Given all this, it is possible to remain in APC if, at all, President Tinubu will allow internal reform in the party to return it to its founding vision, which, as it is, is very remote. But my reality now in the party is that my membership has been rendered useless, and there is no need for me to continue to impose myself,” the statement reads. “I have therefore gone back to the trenches and will try to work with all committed Nigerians who agree and subscribe to the goal of actively campaigning for the survival and development of democracy in Nigeria. “We must grow our democracy to the point whereby elected representatives at all levels are accountable to the party, and it is possible for Nigerians represented by various interests to develop strong relationships with political parties and elected governments based on which policies of governments can be made to reflect the wider interests of Nigerians. “I am confident that a strong democracy with functional political parties is possible in Nigeria. I am also confident that, in our lifetime, we can produce governments that are truly capable of making the lives of Nigerians better. I don’t expect party leaders will agree with my decision. I believe that eventually, we will be united will all party leaders and other Nigerians who are committed to developing Nigerian democracy.”

We lost many subscribers —MultiChoice laments

South Africa’s TV giant MultiChoice posted a pretax loss of 706 million rand ($38 million) for the year ending in March, the company said Wednesday citing weak local currencies and a drop in subscribers. The company is the subject of a takeover bid by France’s Canal+, which already holds more than 35 percent of MultiChoice’s shares. “Volatile and weaker local currencies, power challenges in markets like South Africa, and a weak consumer environment due to rising inflation and high interest rates have created an extremely challenging environment,” MultiChoice said. The loss followed a 921 million rand profit before taxes reported the year before. It was compounded by a nine percent decline in subscriptions. Business in South Africa suffered from 275 days of rolling power cuts, which discouraged potential subscribers without backup power, it said. Group revenue was also down five percent to 56 billion rand, but the firm said that were it not for currency swings, it would have been up three percent. Africa’s largest pay TV enterprise, said it would accelerate a cost saving programme, prioritise customer retention, leverage sports renewals and further develop local content. Its Showmax video streaming business, which re-launched in February, was showing “encouraging early traction” with the paying subscriber base growing by 16 percent, the company said. In April, Canal+, a subsidiary of the Vivendi group led by billionaire Vincent Bollore, made a firm offer to acquire all MultiChoice shares it does not currently own. Upping an earlier rejected bid, it offered 125 rand per share, an amount deemed “fair and reasonable” by an independent board appointed by the South African firm. Canal+ is present in 25 African countries through 16 subsidiaries, and has eight million subscribers, according to the French group. Its stake in MultiChoice, Africa’s largest pay TV enterprise, has allowed it to gain a foothold in English-speaking and Portuguese-speaking nations across the continent. AFP

Soludo Backs Single Term For Politicians, Rejects LG Autonomy

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on Wednesday, threw his weight behind the growing calls for single term for elected office holders, arguing that any form of autonomy for local government areas in the country is against the tenets of true federalism. The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) proposed a single-parliament National Assembly in the face of dwindling costs. Soludo, who was Speaker from 2015 to 2019, spoke at The Platform Nigeria, a programme by Lagos-based church, Covenant Nation, to mark the 2024 Democracy Day. The event with the theme, ‘Democracy and the free Market Economy’ also has in attendance; former Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola; the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan-Kukah; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; among others. Soludo said, “Sometimes, these conversations about single term might begin to make some sense so that you fix it, whether you say four years or five years, six years, seven years, single term. “So, you are not thinking about the next election once you finish getting into this. I face that all the day in my state. You want to get into this (project), they say, ‘No, wait, you know you have an election’. And I say, ‘No, let’s get it, if we get there, we get there and if we lose, we lose.” ‘LG Autonomy Against True Federalism’ He said, “Funny enough, more recently, some people are arguing for the autonomy of local governments including some APC persons, which would take Nigeria back many decades from what a true federation is about. “There is no federal system in the world where you have three federal units. The counties in America where we copied (democracy), or there local governments don’t go to the centre to collect money directly. “Each states must have a power to design the kind of local government system that they want. That is what true federalism is about.” Soludo said some responsibilities in the Exclusive List should be dropped by the Federal Government to sub-nationals. “We need to tinker with the fiscal powers of the federal and state governments, devolve much of the responsibilities under the Exclusive List to the states, and at about 60 to 65 percent of the revenues to the states, with each deciding on the local system to adopt. “Why not consolidate the National Assembly into one with no more than five representatives per state? We don’t need a National Assembly costing over N300bn yearly to maintain. We don’t need it,” he said. ‘Tinubu Should Clear Economic Mess’ The Anambra governor admitted that President Bola Tinubu did not cause the extant economic problem facing the country. He said the country was suffering the accumulated poor actions and inactions of previous successive administrations since 1999. “We are now suffering the consequences of delayed adjustments,” he said, emphasising that Tinubu has “the historic duty to mobilise Nigerians to clean up the mess for future generation”. He said, “Nigeria faces fiscal quagmire and even technical solvency problems. Debt has piled to a level that leaves little headroom for more borrowing albeit at very high cost. Yet, the needs of the citizens keeps increasing in geometric proportion by the day.” The governor warned that printing more money would lead to spiraling inflation. “We are in a bind and we must get out of it,” he admitted.
