No food, nowhere to sleep, Boniface laments airport ordeal in Libya

Nigerian forward Victor Boniface has spoken out about the Super Eagles’ ordeal after being stranded for 12 hours at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya. The Nigerian team, in the country for a crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier, faced unexpected delays after landing on Sunday. Expressing his frustration on X on Monday, Boniface wrote, “Been at the airport for almost 13 hours, no food, no Wi-Fi, nowhere to sleep. Africa, we can do better.” The Super Eagles landed in Libya for their qualifier against the host nation, but their chartered ValueJet flight was diverted at the last minute from Benghazi Airport to the smaller Al Abraq International Airport, which is typically reserved for Hajj operations. According to a statement from the Nigeria Football Federation on Monday, this diversion occurred just as the pilot was completing his approach to Benghazi. The unexpected change left players and officials stranded without any reception or transport from the host Libyan Football Federation, despite arrangements being made. The team was supposed to be transported to their hotel in Benghazi, approximately three hours away, but the diversion disrupted these plans. The NFF statement added, “Fatigued players and officials have remained nonplussed as the host Libyan Football Federation failed to send any reception team or even vehicles to take the delegation members from the airport to their hotel, which is said to be three hours away in Benghazi. “The NFF made arrangements for separate vehicles for the team, but the plan was unhinged by the diversion of the aircraft. “Players have resolved not to play the match any longer as NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home

“We need his corpse for proper burial“—Son narrates how SuperSport crew member was murdered in Anambra

Babajide Omoniyi, the only son of late Kolawole Omoniyi, has narrated how the former staff of SuperSport was murdered in Anambra while traveling to cover the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying game between Nigeria and Libya. Mr Babajide who disclosed this to FIJ on Sunday, said that his father, who trained at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Jos, was killed on Wednesday by gunmen en route to Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Akwa Ibom. Hé said how what he first heard was that his father had been kidnapped. Babajide was trying to make plans to put cars up for sale so he could be able to afford the ransom whenever the abductors called. However, he was shocked to learn that they had killed his father. was shocked to learn that they had killed his father. “My father was a former staff of SuperSport, a subsidiary of MultiChoice, and was on his way to the match before he died. He was working as a freelance [journalist],” Babajide told FIJ. “He is the one who handles the monitor to stream the match, he usually operates and mounts the camera when Nigeria is playing on home soil, right from when he was with SuperSport. He has been doing the job for a while and would usually travel a lot in the course of his duty. “On the day after he died, my mum called me at 1:57 am to say she had not heard from him which was unusual. A well-kept tradition in my family is that anyone travelling would keep updating others about the progress of their trip. “But we didn’t hear from him and by Thursday morning, I had called him so many times but his lines were still switched off. I then had to take time off work to travel down to where my mum was.” Babajide further said that before he arrived at their family home, his mum had gotten in touch with someone who said she heard he had been kidnapped. “At this point, I was planning to put his cars on sale should the abductors call for ransom,” Babajide told FIJ. “This was without us knowing he had been dead since around 4 pm on Wednesday, and before we could even confirm this, it took tons of phone calls. When I finally found someone who could confirm the news, they said he had died and his phone had been taken away.” Babajide said no one has reached out to their family about the demise of his 66-year-old father and he worries that something might have happened to his body. “No one has reached out to us. I don’t even know where my dad’s body is. I just spoke to family members, and they’re worried that the longer the body remains unattended, we don’t know what could happen to it. How can we be sure that his body has been properly embalmed, like they said? How can we be certain it’s being properly taken care of?” he told FIJ. “How can we be sure we will receive a complete body, not one that’s decomposed when it’s finally brought home to Ibadan? We need to bury him. He doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. Yes, he’s dead now, but he didn’t deserve this humiliation. He worked too hard for that. He trained at NTA Jos, where he began his career, and I wasn’t even born then. I wasn’t born when he started working. “Someone who worked for over 37 years, was dedicated to his duty and reached the age of 66 while still active and agile doesn’t deserve this kind of humiliation. “Since Wednesday, we haven’t heard anything from anyone. The only information I’ve gotten is from the calls I’ve made myself. “I heard that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) actually paid for their flights before deciding to send them by road. I also heard that the first person they contacted to transport them agreed but was rejected because the company representative said it was too expensive, so they found someone else. “The route they took went through a place called Iseke, Aora, in Ihiala Local Government, Anambra State. I called an Igbo friend, and when I mentioned that location, he said that anyone familiar with the East knows not to travel that route. Even though they say the person they hired is dead, he should have known better than to take them through that area. “I just want my dad’s body so we can bury him in peace. He wasn’t a destitute. He has a family and a grieving wife, even if it’s a small family. We don’t want anything to do with justice; we just want to bury him. His body should be handed over to us. If anything follows, fine. If nothing does, who are we to say otherwise? I was told his body is in Asaba, and that the military moved it from the scene.” Babajide explained to FIJ that, contrary to the circulating news that his father is a journalist with SuperSport, his father had since left the outlet after they lost their broadcasting licence. “All the news circulating that he is a SuperSport staff, but it wasn’t the TV station that sent them on that trip. They lost their TV licence from the platform a long time ago. People are just spreading lies,” he said.

NEWS EXTRA: Super Eagles Stranded In Libya

Nigeria’s senior male football team is currently stranded in Libya, where it is to play the second leg of the AFCON 2025 Qualifier game. Following Libya’s 1-0 loss to Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, both teams were expected to face off again in Benina, their fourth Group D match. The Super Eagles had departed for Libya on Sunday afternoon, but according to reports from the camp of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), an hour to landing at Benghazi, their destination, the Nigerian aircraft was diverted to Al Abraq, a city which is more than two hours drive from Benghazi. The players and officials will now travel by road to Benghazi, the location for the return fixture. Videos released by the NFF on Sunday night showed Nigerian players and officials trying to resolve the issue at a Libyan airport. The Libyan authorities failed to provide transportation for the Super Eagles to get to their destination, forcing the NFF to make alternative plan, which was reportedly frustrated by their host. The airport gate was said to have been locked to prevent the bus from entering. “The tactics is targeted at frustrating the boys and wearing them out ahead of the game. They want to make it difficult for them to prepare for the match,” an insider who spoke off the record told Daily Trust late Sunday. With one point, Libya are currently at the bottom of Group D topped by Super Eagles which have seven points followed by Benin Republic (six) and Rwanda (two).

Police foil ‘another assassination attempt’ on Trump, arrest armed suspect in Coachella Valley

Authorities have arrested a man armed with guns and fake passes outside Donald Trump’s rally at Coachella Valley, California. The suspect, identified as Vem Miller, was intercepted by police at a checkpoint about a half-mile from the rally entrance on Saturday. In a statement, Chad Bianco, the Riverside County sheriff, said the suspect was carrying a loaded shotgun, handgun and high capacity magazine. ”On Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 4:59 p.m., deputies assigned to former President Donald Trump’s rally in the Coachella Valley contacted the driver of a black SUV at a checkpoint at the intersection of Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive,“ the statement reads. ”The male driver, identified as Vem Miller, a 49-year-old resident of Las Vegas, was found to be illegally in possession of a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine. ”Miller was taken into custody without incident and later booked at the John J. Benoit Detention Center for possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine. This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or attendees of the event.“ Bianco reportedly said the authorities “probably stopped another assassination attempt”. The incident comes months after the former president survived an assassination attempts during a rally. The bullet grazed Trump’s ear as Security operatives killed Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old suspect. Also in September, another assassination attempt took place at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach on Sunday. Donald Trump was playing golf in the vicinity as the gunshots rang out. The Secret Service ferried Trump to safety and said it is investigating the incident as a possible assassination attempt.

Atiku Should Stay Away From Contesting Elections, Says Fayose

A former governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose has advised the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to move on from contesting elections in the country. Atiku unsuccessfully ran for the highest office in the land in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023, with three losses occurring at primaries. ”I am sure at this stage with all due respect to him, he would rather want to stay away from politics of contesting elections again,” Fayose said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics while speaking on the crisis in the PDP. The 63-year-old suggested that holding the highest office in the country would lose its appeal and excitement for an octogenarian in the next election cycle. ”By the time Asiwaju(Bola Tinubu) will finish, Atiku Abubakar will probably be 80 or 81 so what will be the attraction? ”We should leave the stage when the ovation is loudest, I respect him and I think Nigerians are craving for a younger generation than ever before so on what basis will Atiku come and contest again,” he said. Despite his feelings about the former vice president contesting in the 2027 presidential elections, Atiku has shown optimism at making the 7th-time his lucky charm The 77-year-old told Voice of America Hausa in May “God willing”.when asked whether he would try again, He added that he won’t back down from running for President “As long as God gives me strength, good health, and long life”. “A former President of America, Abraham Lincoln, didn’t he vie seven times?” he asked rhetorically. Speaking on the chances of his party, challenging the APC, Fayose noted that the structures that once made the party great have collapsed and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections Peter Obi has become a more recognisable figure in the fight to oust the current administration. ”As I always say we can defeat the APC but when we don’t have a party again how can we defeat them,” he said ”When we complain about the APC and we don’t have a party and you can say you will do this and that, but when Obi is the voice of the opposition now. The press will call Obi than call the PDP and when the Publicity Secretary is suspending people and vice-versa, so where is the party?”

Obi, Otti’s panel lacks power to appeal judgment affirming Abure – LP

The embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has dismissed the threat by the party’s caretaker committee, led by Nenadi Usman, to appeal last week’s judgment affirming his (Abure’s) leadership. In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, the pro-Abure National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, contended that the Usman-led 29-man caretaker panel was unknown to law and thus lacked the locus standi to challenge the court’s judgment validating Abure’s leadership. The PUNCH reported last week the Nenadi Usman caretaker committee met with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, before deciding to drag Abure to the Appeal Court. The move came a few hours after the Federal High Court in Abuja declared the contentious national convention that returned him and his National Working Committee to office as valid. The court also compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognise Abure as LP National Chairman. The court ruled that the Nnewi convention earlier held in March was constitutional and in line with the laid down laws of the country. In a statement issued in the wake of the judgment, an excited Abure expressed his readiness for reconciliation and further appealed to Obi to help pacify the party bigwigs and other aggrieved members. Reacting in a terse counter statement released in Abuja on Tuesday night, the Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, announced that they would appeal the judgment. While urging the party faithful to remain calm, Usman disclosed the decision to appeal the judgment was consciously taken after they met with Obi to deliberate on the development. In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, said the Abure-led NWC was not losing over the threat to appeal the judgment. According to him, neither Obi nor the committee was a party to the case in the first place. He said, “It would be unfortunate if they toe that line because you can’t appeal a judgment that you are not a party to. The caretaker committee is not a body known to the Labour Party constitution. It is not a body known to the electoral law or the Constitution of Nigeria. So, they do not even have a locus. “The body was not part of the suit. The suit was between the Labour Party and the INEC. So you cannot appeal what you are not involved in. There are so many instances in the Nigerian law that say if you are not a party to any suit, you cannot appeal. So they have an alternative, maybe they can start a fresh suit. But their name, as I told you, is not even recognised by the law. “What is important is that the Labour Party has been in existence, and we have our fair share of crisis, which has been firmly resolved in the interest of the party. If you don’t like the leadership, you will have to wait until its term expires in four years. For now, the leadership of Julius Abure will expire in 2028. That is what the law has said.”

NERC: Niger, Togo, Benin owe Nigeria N9.41bn electricity bill for Q2 2024

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says international customers owe $5.79 million for electricity supply in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024. The debt amounts to N9.41 billion when converted using the official exchange rate of N1626.32/$ as of October 10. In its latest quarterly report, the agency said market operators (MO) issued an invoice of $15.60 million to four firms in three countries. Out of the aforementioned value, the electricity regulator said only $9.81 million was paid. The firms are Paras-SBEE and Transcorp-SBEE both from the Benin Republic; Mainstream-NIGELEC from Niger; and Odukpani-CEET from Togo. Under an international treaty, Nigeria sells electricity to neighbouring countries like Benin Republic, Togo, and Niger. The electricity regulator also said domestic bilateral consumers failed to remit N695.4 million out of N1.99 billion in the same quarter. “In 2024/Q2, the four (4) international bilateral customers serviced by the MO made a cumulative payment of $9.81 million against the $15.60 million invoice issued to them by the MO for services rendered in 2024/Q2,” the report reads. “Similarly, the domestic bilateral customers made a cumulative payment of ₦1,295.90 million against the cumulative invoice of ₦1,991.30 million issued to them by the MO for services rendered in 2024/Q2.” The NERC said some bilateral customers (domestic and international customers) made payments in Q2 2024 for outstanding MO invoices from previous quarters. “Cumulatively, the international bilateral customers paid a total of $16.65 million; Transcorp-SBEE and Mainstream-NIGELEC have made payments towards all outstanding invoices from previous quarters,” the commission added. “Similarly, the MO received ₦1,309.97 million from the domestic bilateral customers towards outstanding invoices from previous quarters; Mainstream Energy Solutions has made payment towards all outstanding invoices from previous quarters.” The regulator said under the special customers’ arrangement, Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and the host community did not make any payment towards the N1.39 billion (NBET) and N0.11 billion (MO) invoices received in Q2 2024. “This continues a longstanding trend of non-payment by this customer and the commission has communicated the need for intervention on this issue to the relevant FGN authorities,” the commission said. The commission said the continuation of the non-payment could trigger total disconnection from the grid.
