Fuel price hike unfortunate, insensitive, says Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi described the recent hike in the price of petrol products as “unfortunate and insensitive”. Obi made this known in a statement he titled “Reversing the Sudden Fuel Price Increase”, on his X.com account, on Saturday. PUNCH Online reports that transportation costs skyrocketed in the Federal Capital Territory following the hike in the price of petrol by some stations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in Abuja on Wednesday. The stations of the national oil company raised the retail price of petrol to N1,030 from N897 per litre across multiple NNPCL stations in the FCT. The new price, the second increase in one month, represents a 14.8 per cent or N133 rise. According to Obi, the increase in fuel prices has far-reaching negative consequences for the current Nigerian economic survival and well-being of Nigerians. He stated that reversing the sudden price hike relies on the hands of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri and President Bola Tinubu. The statement reads, “As Nigerians continue to groan under extremely difficult economic conditions, largely caused by the Federal Government’s wrong policy choices, the NNPCL has once again raised the price of fuel without providing any explanation. This is both unfortunate and insensitive, considering the wide-ranging negative consequences for our economic survival and well-being. “This is neither how an economy’s resources should be managed nor how a nation should be governed. In this new measure, there is neither sound economics nor necessary compassion. We are told that the NNPCL is now a limited liability company, regulated by agencies such as the NUPRC and NMDPRA, yet there seems to be growing confusion about the roles and responsibilities of the NNPCL and these regulating bodies. “Interestingly, both the NNPCL and the regulatory agencies are supposed to be under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria serving as the substantive Minister. Who, in this arrangement, is regulating who? With the unprecedented but avoidable hardship that Nigerians are enduring, the responsibility for providing a full explanation, offering alternative options, and most importantly, reversing the sudden price hike falls squarely on the Honorable Minister of Petroleum Resources/President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “We hope and pray that he acts in the best interest of the majority of Nigerians, who are living under unnecessarily precarious conditions, and that he does so before his return from his working vacation. To casually inflict such a draconian measure on the populace from the comfort of an annual vacation amounts to taking the people’s welfare lightly and for granted. A new and more compassionate Nigeria is indeed Possible.” Recall that following the hike, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, condemned the fuel pump price increase by NNPC, noting that a registered private company should not dictate fuel prices for Nigerians. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria also threatened to stop operations nationwide following the high cost of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, sold to IPMAN members by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. IPMAN revealed on Thursday that the cost of petrol from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery to NNPC was about N898/litre, but noted that NNPC was selling the same product to independent marketers at N1,010/litre in Lagos.

R Kelly’s daughter accuses jailed singer of abuse as a child

R Kelly’s daughter Buku Abi has alleged that the singer abused her sexually during her childhood. She made this known in a documentary on the TVEI Streaming Network. The singer has been in jail since 2021, serving lengthy sentences for several sexual crimes. Buku Abi, 26, said she was too scared to share her ordeal with her mother. “He was my everything. For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me,” she said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Abi’s mother, Drea Kelly, corroborated her daughters claims saying the singer shouldn’t have abused their child. “What he did to me, he did to me. But you didn’t have to do it to my damn kids,” she said. Abi said she now struggles with her childhood trauma. “I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life and changed who I was as a person and changed the sparkle I had and the light I used to carry. After I told my mom, I didn’t go over there any more. “My brother [Robert] and sister [Jaah], we didn’t go over there any more. And even up until now, I struggle with it a lot,” she said. Jennifer Bonjean, who is R Kelly’s lawyer, accused the ex-wife of having made the same allegation several years ago but were found to be untrue. Bonjean claimed the allegations were investigated by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and were declared “unfounded”. She said the documentary makers didn’t give the singer a chance to deny what he called “hurtful claims”.

Alleged money laundering: US accuses Allen Onyema of obstruction of justice in amended charge

Allen Onyema, chief executive officer (CEO) of Air Peace, has been charged by the US for alleged obstruction of justice. In a superseding indictment, the US attorney’s office, Northern District of Georgia, said Onyema and Ejiroghene Eghagha, the Air Peace’s chief of administration and finance, allegedly submitted false documents to end a federal investigation against them. Onyema and Eghagha have been under investigation for alleged money laundering since 2019. While the Air Peace CEO is accused of moving more than $20 million from Nigeria through US bank accounts in a scheme involving “false documents” to purchase airplanes, Eghagha is said to have committed aggravated identity theft in connection with the plot. In a statement on Friday, Ryan Buchanan of the US attorney’s office in Atlanta Georgia, said the defendants were trying to impede the initial investigation against them. “After allegedly using his airline company as a cover to commit fraud on the United States’ banking system, Onyema, along with his co-defendant, allegedly committed additional crimes of fraud in a failed attempt to derail the government’s investigation of his conduct,” Buchanan said. “The diligence of our federal investigative partners revealed the defendants’ alleged obstruction scheme, making it possible for the defendants to be held accountable for their aggravated conduct of attempting to impede a federal investigation. “Beginning in approximately May 2016, Onyema, together with Eghagha, allegedly used a series of export letters of credit to cause banks to transfer more than $20 million into Atlanta-based bank accounts controlled by Onyema. “The letters of credit were purportedly to fund the purchase of five separate Boeing 737 passenger planes by Air Peace and were supported by documents such as purchase agreements, bills of sale, and appraisals. “The documents purported to show that Air Peace was purchasing the aircraft from Springfield Aviation Company LLC, a business registered in Georgia. “However, the supporting documents were allegedly fake – Springfield Aviation Company LLC was owned by Onyema and managed on his behalf by a person with no connection to the aviation business, and Springfield Aviation never owned the aircraft.” The statement added that the defendants are presumed innocent of the charges and it would be the government’s burden to prove the defendants’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

NERC: FG incurred N380bn electricity subsidy bill in Q2 2024 — down by 40%

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says the federal government incurred an electricity subsidy obligation of N380 billion in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024. The NERC, in its quarterly report released on Friday, said the electricity subsidy bill dropped by N253.24 billion (40 percent) from N633.3 billion recorded in Q1. The drop, according to the commission, was due to the upward review of tariff for Band A customers in April. “It is important to note that due to the absence of cost-reflective tariffs across all DisCos, the Government incurred a subsidy obligation of ₦380.06 billion (52.51% of total NBET invoice) in 2024/Q2 (average of ₦126.69 billion per month),” NERC said. “Between 2024/Q1 and 2024/Q2, the subsidy obligation of the government reduced by – ₦253.24 billion, from ₦633.30 billion (90.57% of total GenCo invoice) to ₦380.06 billion (52.51% of total GenCo invoice). “The significant decrease in the subsidy obligation of the FGN is a result of the policy directive of the Government to implement reviews of tariffs charged to Band A customers while the tariffs for Band B-E customers remain frozen at the rates payable since December 2022.” The NERC said in the absence of cost-reflective tariff, the government covers the resultant gap (between the cost-reflective and allowed tariff) in the form of subsidies. The commission said for ease of administration, the subsidy is only applied to the generation cost payable by DisCos to NBET at source in the form of a DisCo’s Remittance Obligation (DRO). On April 3, NERC approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers under the Band A classification. The commission said customers under the classification, who receive 20 hours of daily power supply, will pay N225 per kilowatt (kW) — up from N66. Following the development, the agency said the approved tariff would reduce electricity subsidy for the 2024 fiscal year by about N1.14 trillion.

Contacted, the spokesman for the Plateau State Command, Alabo Alfred, and the spokesman for the Military Taskforce in charge of maintaining peace in the state, Major Samson Zhakom, as well as the state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms were not readily available to comment on the incident as several calls put across to their phone lines rang out.

EFCC should not be scrapped – Fintiri

The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should not be scrapped but rather strengthened for better efficiency. This came in response to a suit filed at the Supreme Court by 16 state governors challenging the legality of the laws establishing the commission. In an interview on Channels TV’s Hard Copy programme on Friday, Fintiri stated, “For me, it is not the right time to abolish the EFCC, whether it was established rightly or wrongly. We need to make it work better. We need to remove the politics that sometimes leads to claims of witch-hunting.” He also criticised the practice of the federal government taking custody of funds seized from state fund embezzlement, calling it “a wrong practice.” “I heard the Attorney General of Oyo State complaining after a court session that, even though funds are shared among the three tiers of government, federal, state, and local, the Federal Government often oversteps by questioning how states and local governments spend their money. “Even when funds are appropriated, the Federal Government takes it into their treasury. I believe this practice should be discontinued,” he added. Earlier, the governor mentioned that he would decide whether to join the suit after reviewing it with his Attorney General.

FactCheck: Claim that Israel gave Chad map of Boko Haram terrorist’s location in 2020, FALSE

Claim @FinPlanKaluAja1 on X claimed that Israel gave Chad a map showing the pinpoint location of Boko Haram nests in the desert in 2020. Verdict This claim is FALSE. Although reports confirmed that the Chad military repelled and killed many Boko Haram terrorists in April 2020, there’s nowhere in these reports that stated that Israel aided the Chadian military. Full Text An X user @FinPlanKaluAja1 has claimed that when Boko Haram attacked Chad, Isreal gave Idris Derby the map showing the pinpoint location of Boko Haram nests in the desert The X user on September 29, also claimed that ALL the Boko Haram fighters were eliminated after this. The post generated over 500k views, 5k likes, and more than 1k reposts. Many persons commented on the post and believed that this claim was true. Idris Déby was the 6th President of Chad from 1991—2021. Déby was injured on 19 April while commanding troops on the frontline fighting the northern rebel incursion by the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) and died the following day. Background To This Claim On March 25th, Boko Haram Islamist militants killed 92 Chadian soldiers in an attack on an island in Lake Chad. President Idriss Déby said on a visit to the area that the raid was the jihadists’ deadliest yet in Chad. Lake Chad is the region where forces from Chad, Nigeria, and Niger have been fighting the insurgents in a joint campaign for the last five years. Images on state TV in Chad showed Mr. Déby walking among burnt-out armored vehicles.“I have taken part in many operations… but never in our history have we lost so many men at one time,” the Reuters news agency quoted him as saying.According to military sources quoted by the AFP news agency, the attack was on an army base on the island of Boma and lasted for seven hours.Weapons were captured by the insurgents, who escaped with them in speedboats, they said. Verification Responding to the March 25 attack by the terrorists, the Chadian army said on April 10, 2020, that it had wound up an offensive against Boko Haram jihadists in the Lake Chad border region in which 52 troops and 1,000 jihadists were killed. Army spokesman Colonel Azem Bermendoa Agouna told AFP that the operation, launched after nearly 100 soldiers were killed in March, ended Wednesday after the Nigerian jihadists were forced out of the country. It is the first official snapshot of the outcome of Operation Bohoma Anger, launched after Chad’s armed forces suffered the biggest one-day loss in their history. Chad had declared departments near the lake “a war zone” to give the military free rein for the offensive. The Chadian troops chased the Boko Haram fighters “deep into Niger and Nigeria until their armies took over the fight,” Agouna said. Two Nigerian security sources confirmed that the Boko Haram fighters were forced to retreat. See other news publications that corroborated this report Here and Here. No report anywhere stated that Israel gave Chad a map showing the pinpoint location of Boko Haram nests in the desert. Continuous Attacks By Insurgents In 2021, 2022 In Chad In August 2021, at least 26 Chadian soldiers were killed after they were reportedly ambushed by jihadis while on patrol in the volatile Lake Chad region, the Chadian military said Thursday. “Twenty-six members of the Chadian army fell on the field of honor, 14 others have been wounded, including eight seriously,” army spokesperson General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said. “Several terrorists were neutralized and cleanup operations continue.” The attack reportedly took place at the Lake Chad island of Tchoukou Telia. In November 2022, Boko Haram terrorists killed ten Chadian soldiers in an attack on an island in Lake Chad. The terrorists looted the forward military post at Bouka-Toullorom island during the attack in the early hours of Nov 22. Among the victims was the Commander of the Ngouboua military sector, whose name was not mentioned. Conclusion The X user intentionally made up a story to misinform the public. There’s nowhere it can authoritatively be confirmed that Israel gave Chad a map showing the pinpoint location of Boko Haram terrorists in the desert.

Over one million more Nigerians hit by severe food crisis in 2024 – Report

Nigeria is facing a worsening food security crisis, with more than one million additional people experiencing severe food insecurity in 2024 compared to the previous year. This is according to the recently released Food Security Update Report by the World Bank. The report indicated that Nigeria, alongside Ethiopia and Yemen, witnessed a significant rise in the number of people facing acute food shortages. “Conversely, some countries saw improvements. Nations such as Afghanistan, Guatemala, and Kenya reported declines in food insecurity, with more than one million fewer people facing acute food crises, although these countries remained in significant food crisis situations. “On the other hand, 18 countries experienced worsening situations due to factors including intensified conflict and climate-related shocks, such as droughts. Notable examples include Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Yemen, each witnessing an increase of more than one million people facing high levels of food insecurity from the previous year”, according to the report. The report attributed Nigeria’s growing crisis to a mix of climate-induced issues and socio-political instability in various regions. It noted, “In Nigeria, an estimated 1.6 million hectares of land have been inundated, including 342,650 hectares of cropland, affecting 685,770 vulnerable individuals. In Mali, 344,000 people were affected and 1.6 million hectares of land flooded, including nearly 500,000 hectares of cultivated land. “Cameroon, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Togo have also faced flooding, and northern and northeastern Nigeria and Ghana are experiencing dry spells, with adverse effects on crop production and thus food insecurity. “In total, floods and droughts have affected approximately 3.5 million people, who require emergency support. It is estimated that $50m is needed to help 760,200 communities meet their basic food needs.” Data from the report further showed that domestic food price inflation in Nigeria remained among the highest globally, with food prices increasing by 37.5% year-on-year as of August 2024. The surge in prices had put a strain on household incomes, making it increasingly difficult for low-income families to afford basic food items. The report called for urgent intervention to address the immediate food needs of affected populations while also focusing on long-term solutions to improve resilience against climate shocks. The PUNCH had earlier reported that about 172 million Nigerians were unable to afford a healthy diet, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024 report.
