NAFDAC Destroys N10bn Fake, Expired Drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed fake, expired and substandard drugs worth over N10 billion. Director General of the agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this on Wednesday in Gombe. She said the products were confiscated by NAFDAC officials from manufacturers, importers and distributors in the six states of the Northeast geo-political zone. Represented by the North-East Zonal Coordinator of the agency, Mr Kenneth Azikwe, the NAFDAC said the products destroyed included substandard, fake and falsely labelled medicines, unwholesome food products, cosmetics, among others. She said the exercise was a testament to the agency’s commitment to rid markets of substandard, falsified, and unwholesome products that pose serious risks to public health. “The products we are about to destroy, including food, drugs, and other regulated items worth N10 billion, were seized through the diligent efforts of our regulatory and enforcement officers in the zone, who work tirelessly to intercept and confiscate these dangerous items. “These products, if allowed to circulate, could have caused untold harm to countless individuals. By removing them from circulation, we are taking a decisive stand against those who seek to profit at the expense of public safety,” Prof. Adeyeye said. The director general reiterated that the agency would ensure that only quality and safe food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water are consumed and sold in Nigeria. She added that NAFDAC would not relent in its efforts to protect the health of Nigerians, through enhanced surveillance activities, and by ensuring that violators are brought to justice. Earlier, the state Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr James Agada, said the agency was aking a decisive stand against dealers of drugs prioritising profits over public safety. He stated that the destruction exercise was a key component of NAFDAC’s market control strategies to ensure only quality products reach markets. Agada assured that the agency would continue to strengthen regulatory frameworks, enhance surveillance, and bring violators to justice.

NLC asks FG to reverse petrol price hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the federal government to reverse the petrol price hike. On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited increased the price of petrol across its retail outlets. In a statement, Joe Ajaero, president of the NLC, said the labour union is “dismayed” by the petrol hike without commensurate financial capacity of Nigerians. Ajaero said the latest petrol price hike has “grossly altered the calculation” of Nigerians, who are still trying to adjust to the current economic realities. “We challenge the government to go to the drawing board and present us with a blueprint for inclusive economic growth and national development instead of this spasmodic ad hocism and palliative policy,” the statement reads. “It needs no stating the fact that the latest wave of increase has grossly altered the calculations of Nigerians once again at a time they were reluctantly coming to terms with their new realities. “It will further deepen poverty as production capacities dip and more jobs are lost with multidimensional negative effects. “In light of this, we urge the government to immediately reverse this rate hike as previous increases did not produce any good results. People only got poorer. “But more fundamentally, the government should be bold enough to tell Nigerians in advance the destination it wants to take the country.”

Appeal Court affirms removal of Enugu PDP Rep member

The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu has upheld the ruling of the House of Representatives tribunal sacking the member representing Igboeze North/Udenu federal constituency, Hon. Simon Atigwe. The Appeal Court which delivered the judgement in Enugu on Wednesday, held that Hon. Atigwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was not duly elected by the valid votes cast in the rerun election. The court therefore declared Dennis Agbo of the Labour Party as the rightful winner of the 3rd February, 2024 re-run election. The judgement was unanimously delivered by the three members of the panel and read out by the chairman of the panel Justice Ekanem. It would be recalled that Hon. Atigwe was declared the winner of the re-run election held on February 3rd, 2024. The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) said the PDP’s candidate polled 23,863 votes to defeat Hon. Dennis Agbo of the Labour Party who garnered 23,226 votes. Hon. Agbo who had earlier won the February 25th, 2023 election but was sacked by the appellate court proceeded to the tribunal to challenge Atigwe’s declaration. Hon. Agbo argued that the election was marred by wrong computation of result, substantial non compliance to the electoral act among others. In their ruling on 14th August, the Tribunal headed by Justice H N Kunaza said that the petition had merit and declared Rt. Hon. Dennis Nnamdi Agbo the actual winner of Igbo Eze North/ Udenu Federal constituency. Justice Kunaza’s panel declared invalid, null and void the 2000 votes added to the PDP candidate and restored the votes of 25th February 2023 of 14229 for the PDP and 28870 for the LP candidate Rt Hon Dennis Agbo. It also held that Atigwe Simon Chukwuemeka was not duly elected by the valid votes cast as the petitioner won with 23,221 and PDP 21,863 votes and as such, the certificate of return issued to Atigwe should be withdrawn and issued to Hon Agbo. The judgement will return Hon. Agbo to the House of Representatives.

Israel Minister Says Attack On Iran Will Be ‘Deadly, Precise And Surprising’

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said on Wednesday that Israel’s retaliation against Iran for last week’s missile barrage will be “deadly, precise and surprising”. “Our attack in Iran will be deadly, precise and surprising,” Gallant said in a statement posted on social media, adding: “Those who try to harm the State of Israel will pay a price.” Mwanwhile, the United States has asked Israel to avoid conducting military operations in Lebanon like it has in Gaza. Briefing journalists on Wednesday, the State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory. “I’m making very clear that there should be no kind of military action in Lebanon that looks anything like Gaza and leaves a result anything like Gaza,” he said. Miller was responding to a question about a video released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. “You have an opportunity to save Lebanon before it falls into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza,” Netanyahu said. “I say to you, the people of Lebanon: Free your country from Hezbollah so that this war can end.” Hezbollah began low-intensity strikes on Israeli troops a day after its Palestinian ally Hamas staged an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, which triggered war in the Gaza Strip. The clashes have rapidly escalated this month, with Israel carrying out extensive strikes at both the border and further inside Lebanon, before launching ground operations in the country late last month. Miller separately said the United States was “particularly concerned” about the humanitarian situation in north Gaza, where the territory’s civil defense agency said Israeli forces have intensified shelling and closed roads, preventing aid delivery. “We are incredibly concerned about the humanitarian situation in all of Gaza, and particularly concerned about the humanitarian situation in north Gaza, and I can tell you, it has been the subject of some very urgent discussions between our two governments,” he said. “We have been making clear to the government of Israel that they have an obligation under international humanitarian law to allow food and water and other needed humanitarian assistance to make it into all parts of Gaza,” Miller said. “We fully expect them to comply with those obligations,” Miller added, while also warning Israel against “conducting operations in Gaza in perpetuity.” AFP

Nigeria Can Become A Refining Hub, Saves Africa’s $17bn Petrol Products Imports – Dangote

Aliko Dangote says Nigeria must enhance its crude oil production capacity and effectively manage its crude supply to ensure adequate feedstock for domestic refineries, in order to transit from a net importer to a net exporter of petroleum products. The Chairman of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Limited made this assertion during his keynote address at a summit held in Lagos by the Crude Oil Refinery Owners Association of Nigeria (CORAN). He was represented at the event which attracted top government officials and key stakeholders from the midstream and downstream sectors by Engr. Mansur Ahmed, Group Executive Director of Dangote Industries limited. Addressing Nigeria’s potential as a refining hub, Dangote expressed concern that despite producing over 3.4 million barrels of crude oil per day, Africa imports around 3 million barrels of petroleum products daily. He noted that these imports, primarily from Europe, Russia, and other regions, are estimated to cost approximately $17 billion in 2023. He said that Nigeria could capitalise on this situation to become a net exporter of refined petroleum products, as the markets would be more competitively served from Nigeria. “Both the crude oil and the petroleum products will travel shorter distances. The logistics costs of floating storage will be eliminated, and countries can purchase their petroleum product requirements just-in-time. Nigeria and Africa can become completely self-sufficient, and we can keep all the value on our shores. We have done it in cement, and we can certainly do it for petroleum products. “It is worth noting that the Dangote Refinery already produces sufficient diesel and jet fuel to meet Nigeria’s demand. We recently started the production of PMS and will soon ramp up to meet Nigeria’s needs. Our refined products have been exported to diverse markets, including Europe, Brazil, the UK, the USA, Singapore, and South Korea,” he added. Dangote emphasised that Nigeria must develop a refining capacity of 1.5 million barrels per day and prioritise domestic crude supply obligations to seize this opportunity. Acknowledging the arising and future challenges, he urged the government to incentivise investors, contrasting this with the Dangote Oil Refinery, which was built without any government incentives. “…It is unfortunate that while countries like Norway are putting oil proceeds into a future fund, in Africa, we are spending oil proceeds from the future. We will also need to prioritise the implementation of domestic crude supply obligations. We will need to expand our crude oil production capacity to support demand from new refining capacity. The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is taking active steps to achieve this through fast-tracking IOC divestments and other initiatives,” he stated. Emphasising that global developments in the petroleum sector, particularly in Europe, will disrupt historical trade flows for refined petroleum products in Africa, Dangote stated that Nigeria is uniquely positioned to capitalise on this opportunity and become a significant player in the global oil industry. He called for consultation, collaboration, and cooperation among stakeholders. “As a vibrant exporter of refined products, Nigeria will witness an improvement in its balance of trade and generate much-needed foreign currency. Nigeria’s potential as a refining hub is clearly not in doubt; let us work together to make it happen,” he urged. The foremost industrialist noted that the summit’s theme, “Making Nigeria a Net Exporter of Petroleum Products,” would have seemed unrealistic a few years ago, and added that despite being Africa’s largest crude oil producer, Nigeria has historically relied on imports to meet its refined petroleum product needs. However, he emphasised that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals is poised to transform Nigeria from a “net importer” to a “net exporter” of refined petroleum products, establishing the country as an emerging player in global downstream trade flows; with refined products already exported to various markets, including Europe, Brazil, the UK, the USA, Singapore, and South Korea.
