Iran warns Israel against targeting nuclear, oil sites

Iran warned Israel on Tuesday against attacking any of its infrastructure amid fears of a possible Israeli assault on oil or nuclear sites following Iran’s missile barrage last week. “Any attack against infrastructure in Iran will provoke an even stronger response,” state television quoted Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as saying. He spoke after Israel said it was preparing a response to Iran’s October 1 missile attack on its arch-enemy, its second on the country in six months. On Monday, an official statement quoted Araghchi as saying Iran did not seek war in the region. On Friday, US President Joe Biden cautioned Israel against attacking oil installations in Iran, one of the world’s top 10 producers of crude. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps General Rassul Sanairad warned Israel on Sunday that any attack on nuclear or energy sites would cross a “red line”. The Fars news agency quoted him as saying following the Israeli threat: “Some political leaders have spoken of a possible change in Iran’s nuclear policy.” In 2022, after an official said Iran had the technical capability to produce a nuclear weapon, the country stressed there had been no change in its nuclear ambitions. Last year Iran slowed the pace of its uranium enrichment, but then in late 2023 accelerated the production of 60 percent enriched uranium, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Enrichment levels of around 90 per cent are required for military use. Iran has always denied any ambition to develop a nuclear weapons capability, insisting its activities are entirely peaceful. Any attack on Iranian nuclear sites “would have an impact on the kind of response by Iran,” General Sanairad said. Tehran says its attack on Israel, when some 200 missiles were fired, was a response to the death in a Beirut air strike of Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-backed Lebanese movement Hezbollah, and of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Iran blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s death, but Israel has not commented.

All Deposits In Nigerian Banks Are Secured, CBN Assures Nigerians

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has assured Nigerians not to panic as it has put in place policies to ensure that all monies deposited in financial institutions across the country are secured. A statement by the apex bank’s Ag. Director, Corporate Communications, Hakama Ali on Tuesday, reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to ensuring the stability and reliability of the Nigerian financial system. The development comes following a fresh uproar across the country on Monday, warning customers of certain banks to immediately withdraw their deposits, as the licences of those banks had been withdrawn by the CBN. The statement said, “The CBN actively ensures that banks adhere to established regulations and best practices to maintain the integrity of our financial system. Regular stress testing is conducted to identify potential vulnerabilities, helping to ensure that our financial institutions are resilient. “In addition, the CBN has implemented Early Warning Systems that proactively detect and address emerging risks, allowing us to provide timely solutions to any foreseen issues. The Bank’s approach to Risk-Based Supervision ensures that it focuses its regulatory efforts on institutions that may pose the highest risk to the financial system. This targeted strategy allows it to maintain a robust oversight mechanism while promoting the overall health of the banking sector.” Furthermore, the CBN said it has established Memoranda of Understanding with the various countries where Nigerian banks’ subsidiaries are located. “This collaboration enhances regulatory coordination and ensures that our banks operate within a safe and sound framework in accordance with banking regulations, both domestically and internationally. “The CBN remains dedicated to fostering a secure banking environment where depositors can be fully confident in the safety of their funds. It will continue to monitor and adapt strategies to safeguard the financial interests of all Nigerians and stakeholders in our financial system,” the statement added.

Rivers Crisis: I’m A Bit Concerned Tinubu Mentioned Only My Name, Says Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed worry over President Bola Tinubu’s mention of his name in his statement on the destruction of local government secretariats in Rivers State. Fubara was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday. Violent clashes erupted in at least four local government areas — with parts of the buildings in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua council premises set ablaze by rampaging political hoodlums, while gunshots were fired sporadically in Ahoada East to resist newly elected council officials on Monday. The burning of LG secretariats followed the withdrawal of the police officers securing the 23 council secretariats by the police early Monday. Though the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the police opted out of the election that produced the newly elected LG chairmen, Fubara insisted that the election be held on Saturday. The Action People’s Party (APP) won 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the oil-rich state while the Action Alliance (AA) won a seat. Fubara immediately swore in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday but some of the LG bosses were attacked upon assumption of office on Monday. Some council secretariats were also set ablaze by political opponents. Late Monday, Tinubu, in a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, ordered the police to secure the local government secretariats in the oil-rich state. The President also “called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law”. Reacting to Tinubu’s statement on the crisis, Fubara said, “I do not have any issue with it (the President’s intervention) but I am a bit concerned when my name was only mentioned. “The issue is very simple. It’s as simple as ABC, everyone in Nigeria, everyone in Rivers State knows where this issue is coming from. It’s not rocket science. We know what the issue is and the issue is not Fubara, it is not. “I believe strongly that with the recent intervention of the Inspector General of Police, maybe we will have a breathing space. “Maybe as a result of him pulling his men out of those secretariats might be one of the reasons they (hoodlums) took advantage of the situation but I will appeal that while the men are there, the elected officers should have the opportunity to do their work, at least, let them provide security for them, which was even what I was thinking of. “I was never of the opinion that the police should pull out completely. No. When they said they were moving out, it was what allowed these miscreants to take advantage of the secretariats to destroy them.”

Fubara To Wike: Let Go Of Rivers, You Can’t Win All Fights

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has urged his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to let go of any grip he desires to have over Rivers State and allow peace reign in the oil-rich state. Fubara, who stated this on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday, said he does not regret conducting the local government election in the state last Saturday despite the resistance by Wike’s men in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). “I have all the guts to do these things,” the governor said, asking his predecessor to let go of whatever hold he thought he had over the South-South state. The governor said he has kept all “understanding” he had with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ensure peace in the state but the issue has continued to escalate. “There is nothing I have not done on this earth for peace to reign. I can tell you the number of times I have knelt to beg that let’s allow this issue to go. I have done everything,” Fubara said. Asked what his message to Wike would be if they met, Fubara said, “I’ll tell him (Wike) that it has gotten to a point where he needs to let go. We need peace in this state. “You don’t necessarily need to win all the fights; at times, you just let go for the sake of the good people of Rivers State and the love that you have always professed for the state. We need to secure the state. “Fubara will leave tomorrow. Who knows who is going to come? It might be through him or another person but we need to secure the state.” ‘No Need To Destroy Rivers’Fubara said election periods are over and it’s time for governance. He urged the FCT minister to give peace a chance. “What I am appealing is: everyone should sheathe their swords. Even to the minister, my oga (my boss), there is no need to destroy this state. “He (Wike) once ruled this state and the state was an envy of every other state. Another person is there now, what we need now is the support, after four years or eight years, who knows? I will also leave and someone else will take over. That should be the spirit. “When it comes to the election period, you can fight and do whatever but now is the time for governance. We need all the support,” the governor said. Fubara said all Nigerians know that he has no hand in the destruction of local government secretariats in Rivers State. The governor noted that he sounded the alarm on Sunday evening when he swore in 23 newly elected LG chairpersons in the state that some aggrieved political actors had mobilised to destabilise the peace of the state on Monday. ikwerre-lga-riversThe incident is coming days after they Rivers LGA polls. Violent clashes erupted in at least four local government areas—with parts of the buildings in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua council premises set ablaze by rampaging political hoodlums, while gunshots were fired sporadically in Ahoada East to resist the new council officials. The burning of LG secretariats followed the withdrawal of the police officers securing the 23 council secretariats by the commissioner of police. Though the PDP, APC, and the police opted out of the exercise that produced the newly elected LG chairmen, Fubara insisted that the election be held on Saturday. After the exercise was held amid heightened tension, the Action People’s Party (APP) won 22 chairmanship positions out of 23 in the oil-rich state while the Action Alliance (AA) won a seat. Fubara immediately swore in the 23 newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday but some of the LG bosses were attacked upon assumption of office on Monday. Some council secretariats were also set ablaze by political opponents. President Bola Tinubu has since ordered the police to secure the local government secretariats in the oil-rich state.

Video Evidence Contradicts Akwa Ibom Electoral Body, Shows PDP Won Akpabio’s LG

Although the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of Essien Udim Local Government Area in Saturday’s election, a video circulating online has shown otherwise. Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who is a ranking member of the APC, hails from Essien Udim. Nigerians have expressed concern over the manner in which LG elections are conducted as the ruling party in the state or any party supported by the sitting governor carries the day. In the case of Akwa Ibom, the ruling party won in all LGAs save for that of Akpabio, according to the results declared by the State electoral commission. Chairman of AKISIEC, Aniedi Ikoiwak, had declared Ntiedo Usoro of the APC as the elected candidate for Essien Udim LGA, while stating that the PDP reportedly won all other LGAs of the state. But a video posted on social media showed Inyang Ating, a professor from the University of Uyo, who served as the Returning Officer (RO) for the election in Essien Udim, declaring PDP’s Enobong Patrick as winner. “I hereby certify that I was the Returning Officer for the election held on the 5th of October 2024. The election was contested, and the candidates received the following votes: Hon. Ntiedo Usoro of the APC: 686 votes; Engr. Enobong Patrick Friday of the PDP: 55,612 votes.” “Engr. Enobong Patrick Friday, having complied with the requirements of the law and having scored the majority of votes, is hereby declared elected. He also received more than 25% of the votes in all 13 wards of Essien Udim. I so declare, and I hereby sign as the Returning Officer,” he had said. A crowd of supporters at the collation centre was heard shouting, “PDP!! Power!!!!!” The use of flashlights by the electoral officials showed the video recording was done late in the day.

VeryDarkMan Releases Another Alleged Bobrisky’s Audio

Social media influencer and activist, Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, has released another purported call recording of controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky. In September, Daily Trust had reported how VeryDarkMan shared an alleged audio of Bobrisky, claiming he bribed some Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials with N15 million to drop the money laundering charge against him. Bobrisky, however, dismissed the audio, stressing that the claim that he was never in prison was false and should be ignored. In the new audio leak released on Monday, VeryDarkMan revealed that Bobrisky had a conversation with another individual on May 16. Bobrisky allegedly admitted to not being in prison but rather in a well-furnished apartment near the prison where he had access to his mobile phone. He reiterated that the EFCC dropped the charges against him after discovering the substantial amount of money in his account. He said: “I don’t have enough time because I don’t talk to people, but I want to talk to you about this because I haven’t been speaking to anyone or replying to messages sent to me. I don’t want anybody to know I have my phone, but you know what happened to me. “So, before the EFCC, of course, they were investigating me about the cars, money, and everything, all this while. I knew they would come for me one day because of all the noise, but it’s okay. “When they were investigating me, they blocked my account, they froze my account. Obviously, they didn’t want me to carry out any transactions during their ongoing investigation. Initially, they added money laundering charges because of the funds they found in my account and the money passed through it. So, they had some money, but we were able to plead with them and give them some funds to drop the money laundering charges against me.” Speaking further, Bobrisky alleged that the money laundering charges were merely an attempt by the EFCC to detain him unjustly. In the leaked audio, he expressed his shock at being taken to court simply for spending his hard-earned money. “I can’t be facing money laundering charges—God forbid. I know they were just looking for something to hold against me because I was not the only one spraying money, but they chose to target me for that, which is strange. But I’m strong and ready for whatever comes my way. One thing that made me happy was that after their investigation, they realised I was not involved in money laundering, fraud, or any illegal dealings with politicians. “They did a thorough check and couldn’t find any evidence against me. They went to my house, seized my car and everything. During their investigation, they saw the people I did business with. I earned all the money I have legitimately through my influencing work. I can easily make around £10,000 from one job. “They don’t know how much I charge, but I clarified that I can charge as much as $100,000 for influencing. So, if you think you can’t do it, remember not all fingers are equal. Some people do it, and God blesses them, too.”

Two brothers kill 60-year-old father in Kogi

Two brothers, aged between 15 and 19 years, have allegedly killed their 60-year-old father, Alhaji Dahiru Yusuf Maileather, in the Sarkin-Noma area of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. An eyewitness disclosed that the incident occurred over the weekend at approximately 8:30 a.m. when Dahiru Yusuf was stabbed to death by one of his sons. The elder brother of the deceased, Alhaji Nuhu Muhammed Bala, confirmed the tragic event, stating that he was at his residence when a sister called him with the news. “When my sister called me, she said our brother had been killed by his son. I quickly ran to my brother’s residence, only to be told he had been moved to a hospital,” he recounted. Bala added that the suspect has since been handed over to the police. He also mentioned that the suspect’s mother and her other two children have fled to an unknown location. The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, confirmed the incident, stating that one of the suspects, identified as Abba Yusuf, has been arrested, while the second brother is still at large. “It is a case of culpable homicide. On 05/10/2024, at about 21:00 hours, a distress call was received by the DPO ‘B’ Division Lokoja that one Alhaji Dahiru Yusuf ‘M’ of Sarkin Noma area had been murdered. Immediately, a DCO and team were dispatched to the scene, where the lifeless body of the deceased was found lying in a pool of his blood with multiple stab wounds all over his body,” Aya said. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was stabbed by his two sons, Abba Yusuf and Aminu Yusuf, along with their divorced mother, Hajia Jummai, due to a prolonged domestic dispute. Further information revealed that both sons had reportedly robbed their father of millions of naira to purchase iPhones. Eyewitnesses testified that the deceased repeatedly called out “ABBA! ABBA!!” as a dying declaration before passing away at SHAFA Hospital, Lokoja. Photographs of the crime scene have been taken, and the corpse has been deposited at the morgue for an autopsy before being released to the deceased’s relatives for burial according to Islamic rites. The exhibit knife and blood-stained clothes were also recovered at the scene. Abba Yusuf has been arrested, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other fleeing suspects. The Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a discreet investigation.

Dangote refinery to get 400,000 barrels of crude daily as Naira-for-crude deal begins

The Federal Government is set to deliver up to 400,000 barrels of Nigerian crude oil daily to the Dangote refinery under its naira-for-crude agreement, a report by Bloomberg stated on Monday. It said this significant development is expected to take place over the next two months, amounting to 24 million barrels of Nigerian supply between October and November 2024. This increase in processing capacity could have substantial implications for both the refinery’s operations and the local oil industry, transforming the region’s import and export markets. This new development follows the announcement by the Federal Government that the naira-for-crude deal has commenced. The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Monday that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is set to begin the supply of crude oil in naira to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery this week with three more refineries set to start the production of Premium Motor Spirit. According to cargo allocations reviewed by Bloomberg News, Dangote’s increasing reliance on local feedstock will disrupt the Atlantic oil market by substantially decreasing Nigeria’s crude exports. The 650,000-barrel-a-day plant — larger than any other in Africa or Europe — will claim 13 to 14 shipments from Nigeria’s typical monthly program of about 50 cargoes. The West African crude market is set to be “substantially tighter” in the fourth quarter because of the supply to Dangote, said Ronan Hodgson, a London-based analyst at FGE. The volumes could even send Nigerian exports below 1 million barrels a day, he said. Some shipments over the next two months may not be delivered as planned, and October’s list includes two cargoes already delayed from September. Still, the scheduled volume is significantly larger than the average 255,000 barrels a day of Nigerian oil taken in by Dangote over the first half of the year as it gradually ramped up processing, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Dangote is already running at 60-70 per cent capacity and will reach its full rate within months, project management firm Engineers India Ltd. Chairman Vartika Shukla said last month. The latest allocations also suggest that Dangote has continued to curtail its buying of US crude, according to traders. Earlier this year, the refinery imported millions of barrels of WTI Midland, before re-selling some of the oil and scrapping plans to buy more. Nigerian National Petroleum Co. reached an agreement with Dangote last month under which the country’s state-owned energy firm will supply crude in return for being the sole distributor of the refinery’s crucial gasoline production. If Dangote’s ramp-up continues to advance in the coming months, Nigeria could start to realize its long-held goal of curbing costly oil product imports. “If the refinery runs at higher rates, the West African market for gasoline and diesel imports will shrink extremely quickly,” FGE’s Hodgson said.

Tinubu asks Fubara to settle “your dispute“ in court

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law. He urged the political actors and their supporters to settle their differences in court, saying, “Self-help has no place in a democratic system.” The President’s admonition follows reports of arson and vandalism of public facilities in Rivers State after last Saturday’s local government elections. In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President ordered the police to guard public facilities to “restore and maintain peace, law and order immediately.” The statement is titled, ‘President Tinubu decries violence in Rivers, directs police to provide security to local government offices.’ The Action People’s Party dominated the recent local government elections in the state when it secured 314 out of 319 councillorship seats across the state’s 23 local government areas. The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the results in Port Harcourt on Sunday. According to the RSIEC, the APP won 314 wards, while the All Progressives Congress, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party and Young People’s Party each clinched one seat. The Rivers State PDP and the APC factions rejected the conduct and outcome of the election on Sunday, saying no election held on Saturday. The Rivers PDP loyal to the former Governor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, vow3d to challenge the results in court. Meanwhile, the incumbent Governor, Fubara, who is now at loggerheads with his predecessor, has since sworn in the newly elected council chairmen of the 23 local government areas. This has sparked tension in the state as supporters of each camp have laid siege to public facilities. In response to recent tension, “the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state,” Onanuga said. The statement read, “He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions. President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately. “While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions. President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism. “He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy. According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.”
