
A boat conveying an unspecified number of passengers, along with bags of rice totaling well over 200, has been involved in an accident, killing several persons on board the ill-fated vessel in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State.
Reports obtained from the area revealed that the boat was loaded from the riverine community of Pogi in Kogi State and was crossing to Sogun in Niger State on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, at about 9:00 p.m. on the fateful evening.
An insider source said the boat mishap occurred as a result of a heavy windstorm, with no reports of any survivors.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, further stated that the occupants of the ill-fated boat included individuals from the neighboring states of Kogi and Niger, including some young men from Alaba community in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State.
It was learnt that an unspecified number of persons lost their lives, and several bags of rice purchased by the businessmen being transported to Niger State were lost in the river.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Malam Hussaini Audu Ibrahim, said the agency was yet to receive detailed information regarding the boat accident.
He, however, promised to contact the Lapai Local Government Desk Officer of the agency for more detailed information and said he would issue a press statement as soon as he is able to confirm the situation on the ground.
