Confusion As Ebonyi Assembly Gets New Dep Speaker

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has elected and sworn in a new Deputy Speaker, Hon Kingsley Ikoro, who is representing Afikpo North West.

But the dismissed deputy speaker, Hon Obasi Odefe, representing Onicha East, described the action as madness.

The election of Ikoro followed a motion by Hon Onu Nwonye representing Ohaozara West and seconded by Hon Anthony Nwegede of Izzi East with 15 out of the 24 members in attendance.

The motion came barely 24 hours after Hon Odefe raised alarm over plans to impeach him on Saturday.

Odefe, who spoke to journalists a few minutes after the sitting, said he neither resigned his position as deputy speaker and member of the house nor joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said, “What happened at the house today is madness for power. So, I remain the deputy speaker.”
