Mali junta plans for transitional President

Rebel troops who have taken power in Mali said on Thursday “a transitional president” would be appointed from either civilian or military ranks. “We are going to set in place a transitional council, with a transitional president who is going to be either military or civilian,” Junta spokesman Ismael Wague told TV channel France 24. “We are in contact with civil society, opposition parties, the majority, everyone, to try to set the transition in place.” Wague said: “It is going to be a transition which will be the shortest possible. You’re not talking about 2023, 2022. (We have) to complete this transition as quickly as possible, and then we go back to doing something different. “I can’t tell you when we are going to hand over power to civilians, because the transition has first to be put in place.” The rebels have called the junta the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, headed by army colonel Assimi Goita. On Tuesday, the mutineers overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was elected in 2018 for a second term and still had three years left to run. Mali President Keita, Prime Minister Boubou Cisse and other top officials are still being detained and their release is a key demand of Mali’s neighbouring countries as well as the African Union, European Union, the United States and UN. The 75-year-old president made a television appearance in the early hours of Wednesday in which he announced his resignation and the dissolution of government, asking: “Do I really have a choice?” “(I must) submit to it, because I don’t want any bloodshed,” Keita said. When asked about Keita’s quote, Wague said: “He didn’t have a choice because he didn’t see how the people were suffering. That doesn’t mean that he didn’t have a choice because he had a gun pressed against the side of his head.” The spokesman said problems had been accumulating and this affected the military, which is struggling with a jihadist insurgency. “Soldiers were no longer able to carry out their core missions,” he said. Wague refused to be drawn on Keita’s fate. “It’s not for us to decide, (it’s) for the judicial system,” he said.

Worker’s headless body found on company premises

The family of Kingsley Obot , a member of staff of Ellan Star Marine , has demanded investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death on the premises of the company . The deceased’ s family urged the Rivers State Commissioner of Police , Joseph Mukan, to take over the investigation from the Woji Police Division, where the case was being handled . The demands were contained in a letter titled , ‘Gruesome Murder of Kingsley Okon Obot by Ellan Star Marine Company , Agbaraja Bridge, Woji, in the Obio / Akpor LGA ’ and dated June 1 , 2020 . The letter , signed by the family’s lawyer , Paulinus Idio, said the deceased’s headless corpse was found on the premises of the company on May 5 , 2020 . The family said the victim worked with the company for about two months before he was allegedly beheaded on its premises during working hours and thrown into the sea. Kingsley last spoke with his wife on the telephone on May 5 , 2020 . His younger brother , Donald , who visited the company, was reportedly informed that he went out to drink and never came back . “ About 30 minutes after Mr. Donald Obot left the company premises, one Boco , a staffer of the same company, called Donald that the sea wave just washed up a corpse and that he should come and see if it was his brother ’s body . Donald rushed back and identified his headless brother . “ Subsequently , with the threat of the SARS officers , they later brought Kingsley’ s head within the company’s yard . The said body was taken with the head to a mortuary in Eleme the same day the brother visited the company , which was on May 29 , 2020 and also found out that a certain chemical was used on the victim ’s body for speedy decomposition ,” the letter read in part . The family alleged that the company had been threatening the life of the worker who found the corpse , adding that many other workers had died mysteriously on the premises . Boco , however , said his life was not under threat . The letter further read , “ Our client reported the case at the Woji Police Division and seven suspects were arrested, but they were all released the same day wherein our client alleged compromise, as the IPO ( Investigating Police Officer ) was constantly calling him to settle with the company and allow the case to die naturally. .“ We are not confident with the operation of the Woji Police Division and we are most fervently calling on you to take over the matter and arrest the perpetrators and investigate the case of murder and conspiracy to cover up .” A spokesman for Ellen Star Marine , Peter Williams , however , denied allegations that many other persons had died on the company ’s premises. Williams said the deceased was believed to have been drunk on the day of the incident and had fallen into the water . He said the family demanded N 150 m from the firm, which he said the company could not afford . Williams said , “ He was a ship officer of the company . From what we learnt , he fell into the water during the COVID- 19 lockdown and many , who had seen him earlier, assumed that he might have gone home. No one knew that he had fallen into the water until one day when a barge was pulled out. “ The guys who usually worked with him were invited by the police . They were released and we discussed a settlement . The family demanded N 150 m and we said it was not done that way. We offered N 500 , 000 and then N 1 .5 m, but the family rejected it .” The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer , Nnamdi Omoni , said he was not aware of the case, but promised to find out and call back.

Power generation sinks to 3,356MW after new 5,420.30MW peak

Power generation in the country fell to 3 ,356 megawatts on Thursday less than two days after a new peak of 5 ,420 .30 MW was achieved . The Transmission Company of Nigeria announced on Thursday that the nation’s power industry had achieved yet another all – time national peak of 5 ,420 .30 MW . The TCN , in a statement titled ‘ power sector records new improved all – time peak of 5 ,420 .30 MW ’ said the 5 ,420 .30 MW was effectively transmitted through the national grid at a frequency of 50 .10 Hz at 9 : 15 pm on Tuesday . But total generation plunged to 3 ,356 .4 MW as of 6 am on Thursday from 3 ,877 .5 MW at the same time on Wednesday, data obtained by one of our correspondents from the Nigerian Electricity System Operator showed. Eleven out of the nation’s 27 power plants did not generate any megawatts of electricity as of 6 am on Thursday , up from 10 the previous day , according to the system operator . The idle plants were Geregu, Sapele , Alaoji , Olorunsogo II , Omotosho II , Ihovbor , Gbarain, Ibom Power, ASCO , AES and Trans – Amadi . “ The power sector lost an estimated N 2 .23 bn on August 19 , 2020 due to constraints from insufficient gas supply , distribution infrastructure and transmission infrastructure,” the Advisory Power Team in the Office of the Vice – President said on Thursday. The system operator put the national peak demand forecast at 28 ,290 MW , installed generation capacity at 12 ,910 .40 MW; available capacity at 7 ,652 .60 MW ; and transmission wheeling capacity at 8 ,100 MW . According to the TCN , the generation of 5 ,420 .30 MW is the highest ever recorded in the nation’s power sector, surpassing the previous peak of 5 ,377 .80 MW recorded on August 1 by 42 . 50 MW . The new peak generation achieved on August 1 came more than one and a half years after the national grid reached 5 ,375 MW peak generation on February 7 , 2019 . The grid has continued to suffer system collapse over the years amid lack of spinning reserve that is meant to forestall such occurrences. The latest total collapse was recorded on June 2 , 2020 , according to the system operator . The TCN said the gradual but steady improvement in electricity delivery in the nation’s power sector was attributable to the interest of the current administration of the President Muhammad’s Buhari . “ The TCN is committed to working assiduously to further stabilise , rehabilitate and expand the grid and urge Nigerians to lend their support by safeguarding electricity installations nationwide ,” it said . The TCN, which manages the national grid , is still fully owned and operated by the government . The distribution and generation companies carved out of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria were handed over to private investors on November 1 , 2013 , following the privatisation of the power sector. The nation generates most of its electricity from gas- fired power plants , while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total generation .

Nigerian Government bans EU flights from Nigeria

Nigeria will enforce the principle of reciprocity in granting permission to airlines to resume operations into the country as it opens its airspace , the Federal Government said on Thursday. According to the government , what this means is that only airlines from countries that allow flights from Nigeria will be allowed to fly into and out of Nigeria. It specifically stated that airlines from the European Union would not be allowed into Nigeria as the EU had recently banned flights and visitors from Nigeria . On July 2 , 2020 , The PUNCH reported that the Council of the European Union had opened its borders to 15 countries, excluding Nigeria . According to information obtained from the EU website at the time , Nigeria was still not a part of the countries from where visitors were allowed into Europe . Speaking at Thursday’s briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID- 19 , the Minister of Aviation , Hadi Sirika, said Nigeria ’s position was informed by the ban placed by some countries on flights from Nigeria . The minister, who was represented by the Director – General , Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority , Capt . Musa Nuhu , argued that the decision was taken in the interest of Nigerians . He said , “ On the list of countries ( that are banned ) , we are working on the comprehensive list, but the main one that came up is when the EU opened their borders effective 1 st July, Nigeria was among the list of 54 countries that were not allowed to enter the EU . “ To my understanding , as the situation changes , they are going to look at the list and change it . But so far , we don’t have any contrary information to that first one that Nigeria is banned from going to the EU . “ So , as we open our airspace , we are going to apply the issue of reciprocity to those ( EU) countries .” Sirika also stated that airlines would be informed on arrangements that had been put in place to ensure that the resumption of flights were hitch – free . He stated that for now, only a few flights per day would be permitted , adding that they would operate as test runs of the protocols put in place to ensure the safe return to international operations. The protocols , according to him, would be made public in due course . Sirika also stated that inbound international passengers would be limited to 1 ,280 . He said only this number would be allowed to fly into the Lagos and Abuja airports once international flights resume on August 29 , 2020 .

Pastors yet to reopen churches were never believers -Oyakhilome

President of the LoveWorld Incorporated , aka Christ Embassy , Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, says pastors who are yet to reopen their churches for physical services after the lockdown occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic were never believers . The Federal Government had , in March , ordered the closure of all public places , including worship centres across the country, as part of measures to curb the spread of the virus. The Presidential Task Force on COVID- 19 later allowed the reopening of worship centres in June , but some states in the South- West region , among others , did not permit the reopening of churches and mosques till August. However , some pastors have announced that their churches won’t reopen because it is still not safe to do so . “ This is a great concern because there were churches that were thought to be churches until recently ,” Oyakhilome said in a sermon this week titled , ‘Your LoveWorld Specials – Season 2 Phase 4 Day 1 ’. In the message aired via social media , the cleric added , “ We find a lot of ministers who were thought to be advocates of the gospel advocating for shutting down the churches . It is pressure like this that reveals what is a church and what is not . Do they really believe in God , the same God of the patriarchs in the Bible? “ I have laid hands on some of the most infectious people on earth and had no fear of being infected. The word of God guarantees life in Christ . When you get to that point where you are afraid of opening churches for fear of being infected , you Haven denied the faith . You never believed. “ You could be a preacher, but your fear and unbelief have put you in bondage . If Jesus is real and you have Him inside you, shouldn ’t you be a healer of diseases? Should you be afraid ? “ The Bible says, ‘If they shall drink any deadly thing , it shall not hurt them’. Don ’t you believe that? Do you question the validity of the words of Jesus?” Oyakhilome also advised governments all over the world to verify information from global organisations amid the pandemic.
