2020 WASSCE begins with tough COVID-19 safety protocols

The 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates on Monday commenced across the country under strict COVID-19 protocols. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 1,550,000 candidates would be participating in this year’s examination spread across 19,129 centres nationwide. The examination, which was supposed to commence on April 6 to June 5, was suspended due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic. Patrick Areghan, the Head of National Office (HNO) of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), told journalists during an inspection tour of some centres in Lagos that he was impressed with the level of compliance with the COVID-19 protocols. “Firstly, let me offer thanks to God that the much-awaited examination for this year has finally commenced today. “As I speak, this examination is going on simultaneously across all member states in the region. “As you already know we have visited a couple of schools in the state on this first day of the examination and I will like to say I am highly impressed with what I saw on ground in terms of compliance level by everyone participating in this examination. “We all observe the rules by washing our hands with soap and water, carry(ing) out temperature checks, use of hand sanitisers and face masks or shields. “Even the sitting arrangement of the candidates are very well established by ensuring a two-meter gap from each other. “So, if you ask me, I will say I am very impressed with the level of the compliance of the COVID-19 safety protocol and the smooth take-off of the examination,” the HNO said. Mr Areghan warned that the council would deal decisively with any act of malpractice, irrespective of who was involved. He warned principals of schools that they would equally not be spared, if any act of malpractice was recorded in their respective schools during the duration of the ongoing examination.

UNILAG graduate who punched, raped student jailed 50 years

Ibe Pascal Arogorn An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday sentenced John Otema, an alumnus of the University of Lagos , to 50-years imprisonment for raping a 19- year-old student of the institution. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 34-year-old Mr Otema, a quantity surveyor and facilities manager, was charged before Justice Abiola Soladoye with three counts of rape and assault occasioning harm on two female students. He was found guilty on two- counts of rape and assault occasioning harm in respect of the rape of the 19-year-old student (Student X). He was, however, found not guilty on a charge of raping a 20-year-old student (Student Y) of the institution. He bagged 50-years in prison for the rape and three-years in prison for the assault on student X with both sentences to run concurrently. In absolving Mr Otema of raping student Y, Justice Soladoye noted that the demeanor of student Y in her testimony was mischievous and she would not have claimed that she was raped if Mr Otema had paid her the N50, 000 agreed upon before their rendezvous. The judge quoted a portion of student Y’s testimony which stated, “With intention to scare him off, I asked him for N100,000 but he said he will give me N50,000. “I gave him my account number but he did not credit my account. Friendship with benefits was the crux of our relationship.” The judge described student Y as a game player who had embarked on a sexual frolic. “The defendant, John Osagie Otema in respect of count-one (rape) is found not guilty as there is overwhelming evidence before the court that sexual intercourse between the defendant and PW2 (Student Y) was consensual as it was friendship with benefits,” she said. In convicting Mr Otema of rape and assault occasioning harm of student X, Justice Soladoye noted that in addition to medical evidence and photographs tendered by the prosecution, student X had also identified the defendant as her assailant who bit her back and punched her eyes. “For count-two (rape), the defendant is found guilty and is hereby sentenced to 50- years in prison as the evidence adduced before this court has been proved beyond reasonable doubt by the prosecution. “With regard to count-three (assault occasioning harm) the defendant is found guilty and is hereby sentenced to three-years in prison as the prosecution has done its job diligently by proving the charge beyond reasonable doubt.” The judge decried the spate of sexual violence committed against women and girls. “This State of Excellence has zero tolerance for this sort of crime and the punishment meted out to the defendant will serve as a deterrent to other sex offenders that they too will be caught and brought to justice. “Women and girls like every other member of the society should be respected and not be into prey by sex maniacs,” she said. Earlier the defence counsel, Fred Onyeka, in his plea for mercy, said that Mr Otema is a young man with aged parents who also had his whole life ahead of him “He had the misfortune of this matter coming upon him not long after he left UNILAG. He had a good job before this incident occurred and was destined for the very top of his career. “What has happened will definitely truncate the prospects of his rise to the top of his career if my lord’s intervention in sentencing him does not happen,” Mr Onyeka said. NAN reports that during the trial, six witnesses – the two students, a policewoman, Nkem Ejelonu and three UNILAG staff members — testified for the prosecution. Mr Otema testified solely in his defence. During his testimony he denied committing the offences. According to the prosecution led by Arinola Momoh-Ayokanbi, Mr Otema had sexual intercourse with the student Y without her consent on January 31, 2018 at his home at No. 6, Ajileye St., Bariga, Lagos. The prosecution claimed that earlier that month, Mr Otema had raped student X within the premises of the institution. “On Jan. 17, 2018 while coming from her hostel to Moremi Hall, Otema parked his car and asked student X for directions to Moremi Hall. He compelled her to enter the car under the guise of giving her a ride. “He auto-locked his car and drove her to the Distant Learning Institute (DLI) area where he assaulted her by punching her face several times, he bit her back, ordered her to undress and took her nude photos. The offences contravene Sections 173 and 260(1)(2) of the Criminal Code, Law of Lagos State 2015..

IPOB Issues Death Threats Against Nigerian Journalist, after AFP Interview

Ibe Pascal Chinedu Arogorn Members of the Proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafara (IPOB) has issued fresh death threats to a Nigerian Journalist and Columnist, Frederick Nwabufo . The columnist first had a brush with the proscribed group in June 2019 when he wrote an article asking the South-East to cooperate with Miyetti Allah on security. Irked by the article, some members of the group issued threats against the journalist. In an interview with AFP Fact Check on August 14, the journalist said the movement’s supporters saw President Muhammadu Buhari as an obstacle to the realisation of their separatist goals and employ the body-double narrative to “de-legitimise” the Buhari government. “The (Biafran) leadership needs the controversy to stay alive — to remain relevant,” Nwabufo said in the AFP report. This appears not to have sat well with the group and Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, who issued threats against AFP in a broadcast. Speaking on the fresh threats on Monday, Nwabufo said he woke up to calls from family members in the South-East telling him that IPOB was looking for him. He said, “I woke up to calls from family in the South-East this morning. They told me IPOB was looking for me. They also expressed fear for their own safety. “This is one threat too many. Members of IPOB had issued similar threats before but this is more targeted — with my photo and an insidious message which has been circulated on social media by agents of the proscribed group. “I have decided to take it without reclining. The security agents will be involved this time.” Nwabufo said he was preparing to file a petition with the Department of State Services over the threat. The group attacked Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, at an event in Germany in 2019.

You are after money -El Rufai blast Southern Kaduna Leaders

Ibe Pascal Arogorn Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has revealed that some leaders in the state want money for peace to reign but his administration won’t appease ‘trouble makers’. Crimefacts earlier reported how the Southern part of the state has experienced the worst form of violence in recent times with hundreds of residents murdered by bandits. Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, el- Rufai said, “I have no time for nonsense. I will not appease criminals. I will not appease idle people who have nothing to do but to raise a spectre of genocide. They do that to get money into their bank accounts and get donations from abroad instead of standing up. “Anyone that is moderate, anyone that is promoting peaceful co-existence between various ethnic groups is considered a sell-out. And a governor like me, who does not appease them because they are used to being appeased, they cause troubles, they organise these killings and then, their leaders are invited by the governor, they wine and dine and they are given brown envelopes. That’s what they have been doing for 20 years. “And we came into office and we said no more, nobody who does not encourage peaceful co- existence will have access to the governor or the Government House. I have no time for them. I am using the security agents to carefully mark them and when we accumulate enough evidence, we will get them and put them before a judge.”

My Lawyers will appeal Tribunal Ruling -Diri

Ibe Pascal Chinedu Arogorn Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, has said that he will appeal Monday’s ruling of the state election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja and has instructed his lawyers to challenge the decision ,Crimefacts has learnt . Governor Diri, who spoke shortly after the tribunal ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission wrongly excluded the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party governorship candidate in the November 16, 2009 election, said he had confidence in the judiciary that he would triumph in the end. He said, “We trust in the judiciary and we are appealing the judgment. With God on our side, we will get justice. The governor urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party and his supporters not to panic and to continue to remain calm and law-abiding .

Nsukka Catholic Bishop calls for varsities re-opening

Ibe Pascal Arogorn The Catholic bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, has joined the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS to call for the re-opening of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The students’ body had recently urged the federal government to re-open tertiary institutions in the country to save students from frustration already eating into their psyche, while also calling for strict adherence to all safety protocols geared towards checking the spread of coronavirus at all the institutions learning in Nigeria. In his submission, the bishop while speaking to Journalists at Nsukka on Monday, said that it would be unjust to re-open the economy while keeping the educational institutions responsible for character formation of the youths shut. This development, according to him, was wrong as nations cannot run on economies alone. “We need values and these values are naturally transmitted by religion and proper education,” he pointed out. The cleric called on those in government to urgently do whatever they can, to gradually return the children to the environment of formation and education. He argued that there was a sense of injustice and sin sustaining the continued closure of schools in Nigeria because many of those in high places in government in Nigeria have their children in private universities and tertiary institutions outside the country where lectures are going on online while the children of the poor are loitering at home with most of them unable to resist the temptation to crime. The Nsukka Catholic Bishop who is also the Pro-chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, frowned at the threat of university teachers to continue on their strike action when school reopens, pointing out that their situation can no longer be defended. According to him, “whereas we support whatever effort teachers may make to use legitimate means of getting what is their right, they should bear in mind that it is immoral or sinful for them to continue to be paid for work they are not doing.” He argued that whatever may be the disagreement between university teachers and the government must not be settled at the expense of students and their parents. The Nsukka Catholic Bishop called for all hands to be on deck to return “our children to schools in such a way as to protect them from coronavirus and also protect them from the greater virus of crime and idleness.”

BREAKING many People to resign at Daily Trust Newspaper over ‘N1500 Pay As Published’ Policy

Ibe Pascal Arogorn In a protest against the management of Daily Trust Newspaper, Weekend Editor, Lawal Danjuma, Sokoto Bureau Chief, Rakiya Muhammad, and many reporters of the media organisation have resigned. Crimefacts gathered that the newspaper had in June introduced a policy of converting all editorial staff to pay-as-you-publish basis. By this policy, all reporters who were hitherto on permanent and freelance basis have no fixed salary, allowance or any other periodic benefits but would be paid N1,500 per published story. Some operations staff were also affected. It was also gathered that while this policy was being implemented, the company also sacked a reasonable number of staff. “Basically, the newspaper decided to casualise labour by paying reporters only for stories they write. That means reporters are now easily expendable. They can only be paid based on their stories published. “Only Bureau Chiefs, title editors, and some few line editors were exempted. As a result of this policy, some staff have started tendering resignation,” a reporter with the newspaper told Crimefacts . The reporter disclosed that the management of the newspaper asked all affected staff to sign an oath of secrecy when the news of the unusual casualisation of labour got out in the open. When contacted, a senior management staff of the organisation, who asked not to be named, confirmed the development, however, adding that the board may reverse the decision following the backlash that has greeted the move already.
