AK-47 carrying herdsmen: You are unfit for office, Akeredolu blasts Bauchi gov

For declaring support for herdsmen who carry AK-47 rifles, Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has come under searing criticisms from people across political divides who described his statement as “careless and inciting.” For declaring support for herdsmen who carry AK-47 rifles, Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has come under searing criticisms from people across political divides who described his statement as “careless and inciting.” Mohammed had justified the carrying of the dangerous assault rifles by herdsmen on the premise of self-defence against cattle rustlers and other threats. The chairman of the SouthWest Governors Forum and Ondo State governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, described the Bauchi governor as an anarchist and one who is unfit for public office. Speaking through his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Donald Ojogo, Akeredolu expressed disappointment over the statement credited to the Bauchi governor, describing it as shocking and disappointing. “We are persuaded to believe he didn’t make that statement. If indeed he made that statement and owns up to its contents, it then means that the Bauchi State governor has declared on behalf of the Federal Government, an Executive Order which now allows all Nigerians, herdsmen inclusive, to carry prohibited firearms like assault rifles for self-defence. ”That is exactly what the Governor has done and displayed by his conduct which brazenly depicts that whether other Nigerians like it or not, herdsmen must carry AK-47 for self defence while other non Fulani herdsmen must remain unarmed to be perpetual victims of arms wielding bandits,” Akeredolu said. The governor, who also described the statement as careless talk and inciting said, ”by that statement, the governor has in one breath, agreed that indeed Fulani herdsmen carry AK-47 and at the same time encouraging all to do likewise. “The Bauchi governor has by his conduct and attitude ushered us into the next level on the path to anarchy. He’s not fit for public office, persons of such impecunious disposition and character are not fit for public office. ”As long as Nigeria’s constitution remains unchanged, it is still unlawful for any unauthorised persons to carry prohibited arms. The statement is most despicable, highly recommended for the dust bin of careless talks.”

Dozens Arrested, Stripped As Youths Defy Heavy Security To Occupy Lekki Tollgate

Dozens of protesters, under the tag #OccupyLekkiTollgate, were arrested on Saturday in Lagos as several youths defied the threat by the Lagos Police Command to stop the protest. Daily Trust reports that there was a massive detachment of police at the Toll Plaza, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, in a show of force to stop the protest. The protest was against the decision of the State Judicial Panel of Enquiry to allow the reopening of the Lekki Tollgate, saying justice is yet to be served for those allegedly killed during the October 20, 2020 shooting there. Earlier in the week, the federal and Lagos State governments warned that they would not tolerate the protest, vowing to crack down on the protesters. Despite the threat, some of the protesters trooped out to the Lekki Tollgate early on Saturday, defying the heavy presence of security operatives led by the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Olayinka Egbeyemi. It was a tense atmosphere at the tollgate as the police pounced on the protesters several of whom were arrested. Among those arrested was a famous comedian, Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni. Sources said no fewer than 30 protesters were arrested and taken to unknown locations in different police vans and Black Maria trucks. A video shared on social media platforms showed many of the protesters, including Mr Macaroni, jampacked inside a bus with no clothes on. Several protesters were also beaten up while some were chased away from the tollgate. A few hours later, another group of protesters arrived the tollgate, daring the police to arrest them. “We are all Nigerians and nobody is bigger than this country, we need justice,” one of the protesters, Dayo William, said. Daily Trust observed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, later arrived the scene to assess the situation. However, he rebuffed media requests to give clarification on the number of people arrested. Speaking with one of our correspondents, the President of All Nigerian Youths Reoriented Initiatives (ANYRI) and initiator of ‘New Nigeria’, Comrade Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, described the arrest of the protesters by security operatives at the Lekki Tollgate as “uncivilized, undemocratic and unconstitutional”. Ajadi said the deployed security operatives should have been on the ground to protect the protesters and stop any form of suspicious trick by hoodlums to hijack the peaceful protest. It was learnt that those arrested were first detained at Area J Elemoro before they were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba. However, a mild drama unfolded while the suspects were being driven in a Black Maria to SCID Yaba. It was gathered that the vehicle, which had not been serviced for a long time, broke down in the middle of the road. A police source said those attached to the Black Maria were sighted pushing the vehicle before it eventually started again. Our correspondent gathered that while at SCID, all the suspects, about 30 of them, were forced into another broken down truck parked at Panti. Hours after their arrival, they were arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate Court on a three-count charge of conduct likely to cause breach of peace. The court granted bail to the protesters. A civil society organisation, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), had earlier threatened to pursue legal action if the arrested protesters were not immediately and unconditionally released.

Nobody can force us out of South-West, not ready to go back to North–Miyetti Allah

Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore have vowed to resist any eviction from the South -West , citing their rights as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution to live wherever they desire . Miyetti Allah also vowed to avenge the alleged attacks on and loss of herdsmen and their cattle , saying it would never tolerate any act of injustice on herders. The National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore , Mr Alhassan Saleh , stated these in an interview with Sunday PUNCH against a backdrop of the eviction notices issued to criminal herdsmen by some South – West groups and personalities . Saleh said it was wrong to drive herders out of any part of Nigeria and that even if there were criminals among them , it was the function of the government ’ s security forces to identify and arrest them . He said the eviction of herdsmen from the southern region of the country was a dangerous precedent and that the best way to solve the herders-farmers crisis was for state governments to provide ranches and grazing routes for the herders and their animals. The Ondo State Governor , Rotimi Akeredolu, had in January asked all Fulani herdsmen to vacate the forest reserves in the state. He later issued a seven – day ultimatum to the effect . The governor gave the order at a meeting with leaders of the Hausa /Fulani and Ebira communities in the state, saying the activities of the herdsmen had long been causing a threat to security in the state. He said , “ As the chief law and security officer of the state, it is my constitutional obligation to do everything lawful to protect the lives and property of all residents of the state. In the light of the foregoing , the following orders are hereby issued : “ 1. All forest reserves in the state are to be vacated by herdsmen within the next seven days with effect from Monday , 18th January, 2021. ” The governor had also offered herders who wished to continue their business in the state to register with the appropriate authorities. Akeredolu ’ s directive had generated criticism from the Presidency, which, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity , Garba Shehu, said the governor could not “ unilaterally oust thousands of herders who have lived all their lives in the state on account of the infiltration of the forests by criminals . ” Nevertheless , some South -West stakeholders have also issued similar eviction notices to criminal herdsmen in the region, accusing them of kidnapping, rape , and farmland destruction, among other crimes in places like Ibarapa and Yewa in Oyo and Ogun states , respectively . One of the prominent voices , Yoruba activist and Akoni Oodua of Yoruba land , Sunday Adeyemo ( aka Sunday Igboho) , also asked criminal herdsmen to leave the region. However, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore National Secretary , Saleh , said no group could evict the herders, vowing to resist any eviction from the South – West. He said , “ Nobody has the right ( to evict herdsmen ) . If you say you are going to evict us , we will resist eviction . We have been surviving in harsh environments; if we do not resist, we will be wiped out of the planet . If you kill a herder , don’ t go and sleep , we will revisit you , and it ’ s not because we hate your tribe. People attack herders, and in one way or the other, herders have found a way to retaliate. ” Also , Saleh said nobody could bar foreign herdsmen from entering Nigeria , saying most of the herders entering to the country once settled in Nigeria but relocated to other neighbouring countries like Ghana and Benin republics . He said , “ All those who travelled to the Benin Republic and others are coming back home. All those saying they will bar foreign herders from entering Nigeria are just playing to the gallery because if they are aware of the ECOWAS Protocols , they would know they cannot chase them away. That is why the position of the Bauchi State Governor [ Bala Mohammed] is the true position. You have no right to evict anybody from any part of the country. “ Our number has increased recently because of the tension in Ghana and Benin republics . The ones in Benin Republic have integrated with the Yoruba in such a way that they speak the language . They were initially living in the South -West, and they are coming back , ” he added . Saleh described the eviction notice to herders as propaganda adding that “ innocent” herders were becoming the casualties . He said , “ They expected a reaction from us , maybe by way of attacking other ethnic nationalities. But that is wrong because the herders they are attacking are the innocent herders. Are the criminals representing anybody ? They are doing their criminal enterprise . Our own pain is that the people who are supposed to know are pretending as if they don’ t know . Saleh also asked governors to provide land for ranching for the herders as a solution to the continuous crisis , adding that the eviction of herders would only lead to wider consequences . We aren ’ t ready to relocate to North –Miyetti Allah leaders Similarly , the leaders of Miyetti Allah in some states in the South – East and South – South geopolitical zones have said they are not ready to leave the regions anytime soon . The Northern Elders Forum had on Friday called on herdsmen feeling unsafe in the southern region of the country to relocate to the North. NEF also asked northern governors to prepare to receive herders willing to return to the North. But the South

With 57-43 votes, US Senate quashes impeachment, acquits ex-President Donald Trump

Former US President Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate on Saturday on the charge of inciting the January 6 riot at the Capitol after an unprecedented second impeachment trial that exposed a Republican Party deeply divided over Trump’s conduct and uneasy with his continued role in public life, Bloomberg reported. The vote was 57-43, falling short of the two-thirds majority required for a conviction, with seven Republicans joining with Democrats and independents in finding Trump guilty on the single impeachment count. It was the most Senate support to convict a president since Andrew Johnson’s impeachment trial in 1868. Although the impeachment and the events that precipitated it may have soured some voters on Trump, the acquittal leaves the door open to Trump running for president again in 2024. More to follow….

Fani Kayode: A consistent, inconsistent politician

By DONS EZE, PhD David Oluwafemi Adewunmi Fani-Kayode, controversial, maverick, and feather-weight politician, is known to be loud-mouthed and inconsistent. Even in his private or family life, Femi Fani-Kayode, or FFK, as he is popularly called, is also unstable. With a privileged and distinguished parental background: his great-grand father, being one of the earliest Nigerians to be educated in England; his grand-father, a Cambridge law graduate; and his father, also a Cambridge law graduate, prominent politician and Deputy Premier of the defunct Western Region; Femi Fani-Kayode, no doubt, must have been brought up as a spoilt child. As later to manifest itself both in his public and private life, Femi’s education voyage was floating, rather unstable. He first entered Brighton College, United Kingdom, at the age of eight years, after which he left and went to Holmewood House School in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, South-East England. Femi later left the school and went to Harrow School in Harrow on the Hill, United Kingdom. He then went to Kelly College in Tavistock, also in the United Kingdom, where he finally completed the rest of his public education. Femi Fani-Kayode was at Cambridge University, where his grand-father, his father, and his elder brother, had previously read law, and from there, he went to the Nigerian Law School, and was called to the Nigerian bar in 1985. Femi Fani-Kayode’s political life is chequered and unstable. He jumps from pillar to post, from one political party to the other. In 1989, he was a member of the Nigerian National Congress (NNC), and was elected its national youth leader. Less than a year later, in 1990, he jumped ship and joined the National Republican Convention (NRC), where he was appointed Chief Press Secretary to Chief Tom Ikimi, the NRC National Chairman. In 1991, Femi Fani-Kayode moved again, and was made Special Assistant to Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi, former head of the Nigerian Security Organisation (NSO). During the Abacha’s military junta, Femi Fani-Kayode joined the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), but fled the country in 1996. He came back to Nigeria in 2001 and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and was appointed member of Obassnjo’s Presidential Campaign Team for the 2003 presidential election. After President Obasanjo won that election, Femi Fani-Kayode was rewarded with the appointment of Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the President. He used that position to lambast or attack all perceived opponents of the Obassnjo administration, including those who were opposed to the former President’s alleged Third Term bid. In 2006, Femi Fani-Kayode was appointed Minister of Culture and Tourism, but was later redeployed to the Aviation Ministry, as Minister. When Obassnjo left office in 2007, Femi Fani-Kayode began a weird dance. In November 2009, before Umaru Yar’Adua, Obasanjo’s successor, fell ill, FFK wrote a poem titled, “I Stand And I Fight”, in which he described Yar’Adua as “a sickly tyrant with an Amalikite Foundation”. When Yar’Adua left Nigeria and flown to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, Femi Fani-Kayode wrote a satire titled “Corpsology: Umaru’s Gift to the Modern World”, where he defined “Corpsology” as “the rulership of the living by the dead”. When Yar’Adua finally died, Femi Fani-Kayode dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and joined the All Progressive Congress (APC). He remained with the APC until June 2014, when he again left the party and rejoined the PDP. Now that Femi Fani-Kayode has started romancing with the APC, nobody should be surprised. It is true to type. He had visited the party’s interim National Chairman, Mai Mala Buni, and Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who categorically stated that FFK had joined the ruling party. Perhaps, Femi Fani-Kayode is bringing to bear his unstable married life into the world of politics. He has been married for four or five times, and got divorced on each occasion, thereby changing women like wrapper. His first marriage was to Saratu “Baby” Atta, in 1987. In 1990, they divorced. In 1991, he married Yemisi Olasunbo Adeniji. In 1995, they divorced. Regina-Hanson Amonoo was his third wife. They were married in 1997. He equally divorced her and married Precious Chikwendu, a former beauty queen, in 2014. In 2020, he kicked out Precious Chikwendu, after accusing her of infidelity. FFK is a quick-tempered politician. On August 25, 2020, while attending a press conference during his tour of Southern Nigeria, Femi Fani-kayode insulted and denigrated a journalist who asked him a simply question: “Who is bankrolling your tour?” He burst out in anger and began to dress the poor journalist down. Media houses as well as Nigerians on Twitter and other social networks expressed great displeasure at his barrage of insults. He later publicly apologized to the journalist. Femi Fani-Kayode has no political ideology. He has no permanent friend. He is a fairweather politician. He is an urban gorilla. He is a rolling stone that gathers no moss. Nobody can point at what Femi Fani-Kayode’s membership of the PDP was able to do for the party both during the 2015 and 2019 general elections in Osun State, where he comes from, and in Lagos State, where he lives. If thus, Femi Fani-Kayode finally leaves the PDP and joins the APC, I doubt whether anybody in the PDP will miss his absence, nor even the APC, will see him as an asset.

Lekki-Toll Protest: Peaceful Protest is a human right – Activist fumes

February 13, 2021 A human rights activist and author, Comrade Paul Ikechukwu Njoku, has decried that peaceful protest is a human right to mankind. The rights activist urged the Nigerian Police to apologetically release the peaceful protesters in their detention camps and warned on the looming insurrection in the country, adding that Nigerian courts have severally affirmed the right to peaceful protests. He said, “Section 40 of the 1999 constitution as amended, guarantees the right of citizens to peaceful protest. Our security agents should always secure and protect citizens on peaceful protest in line with the Nigerian constitution, United Nations Charter and African Charter on human and peoples rights”. Comrade Njoku, further noted that the continued police brutality meted out against the peaceful protesters especially at the Lekki-Toll Gate on Saturday, February 13, 2021, is a crass abuse of the fundamental human rights of Nigerians to peaceful protest. “February 13, 2021, is another sad day on human and peoples rights as #Endsars protesters were inhumanly arrested and shoved by the Nigerian police. “It is very sad to note that the Buhari-led government relishes romancing and negotiating with Fulani murderous militia masquerading as herdsmen but repeatedly remains brutish and lethal on the defenceless and peaceful protesters in Nigeria. This is unacceptable. “Killer bandits are treated with executive negotiations, rewards and hospitality whilst the defenceless protesters are arrested, brutalised, maimed, stripped and treated like condemned armed killers for peacefully demonstrating against incompetent leadership and clueless governance”, Mr. Paul, stated.

29 year-old man sentenced to death for killing herdsman in Adamawa

A 29 year old farmer, Sunday Jackson of Dong community in Demsa Local Government Area, Adamawa state has been convicted and sentenced to death by hanging for killing a herdsman. Sunday Jackson who was tried by Honourable Justice Fatima Ahmed Tafida led High Court for culpable homicide punishable with death contrary to section 221 of the penal code law, was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. The convict was found guilty of causing the death of the herdsman, Buba Ardo Bawuro by stabbing him with a knife on the neck in a bush in Kodomti community, Numan LGA. In his extra judicial confessional statement admitted in evidence, Sunday Jackson narrated that while he was working in his farm in a bush in Kodomti, the deceased came and put his cattle in his farm, but when he asked the Fulani herdsman why did he do so, the herdsman did not say anything. According to him, he pursued the animals out of his farm, but the Fulani herdsman brought out his knife and advanced towards him with the knife and that on his part, he had nothing in his hand to defend himself. Sunday Jackson said that he started running and screaming but no one came to his rescue, saying that as he was running, the herdsman trailed him and stabbed him with the knife at the back of his head. He added that he then turned back to hit the deceased with his left leg, but he was not lucky as the deceased used the knife and stabbed him on the left leg. At that point, according to him, he got scared when he discovered that the Fulani herdsman was trying to to stab him again, saying that he held the hand of the deceased, and that as they were struggling, he collected the knife, stabbed him 3 times on his neck and threw away the knife. But when he was arraigned before the court earlier, the defendant and now the convict pleaded not guilty to the offence, and in an effort to establish its case against him, the prosecution called 2 witnesses. Arguing his case earlier, the defence counsel, F. A. Ogbe, told the court that the action of his client was in self defense, and prayed the court to discharge and acquit the farmer and former student G.D.S.S Zangun in Numan LGA. On his part, counsel to the prosecution, N. J. Atiku, urged the court to convict the defendant solely on his confessional statement, and based on the fact that the death of human being had actually occurred. In its verdict on Wednesday, the court presided by Justice Fatima Ahmed Tafida, said that the defendant had confessed to be the one that actually killed the herdsman, and that his confessional statement alone is enough to warrant his conviction. Justice Fatima held that the defendant having disarmed the deceased, had the opportunity to escape for his life but failed to so do, saying that having considered the evidence (exhibits) tendered and the fact that they were not discredited, the prosecution has proved its case against the defendant and sentenced him to death by A 29 year old farmer, Sunday Jackson of Dong community in Demsa Local Government Area, Adamawa state has been convicted and sentenced to death by hanging for killing a herdsman.
