Lekki-Toll Protest: Peaceful Protest is a human right – Activist fumes

February 13, 2021

A human rights activist and author, Comrade Paul Ikechukwu Njoku, has decried that peaceful protest is a human right to mankind.

The rights activist urged the Nigerian Police to apologetically release the peaceful protesters in their detention camps and warned on the looming insurrection in the country, adding that Nigerian courts have severally affirmed the right to peaceful protests.

He said, “Section 40 of the 1999 constitution as amended, guarantees the right of citizens to peaceful protest. Our security agents should always secure and protect citizens on peaceful protest in line with the Nigerian constitution, United Nations Charter and African Charter on human and peoples rights”.

Comrade Njoku, further noted that the continued police brutality meted out against the peaceful protesters especially at the Lekki-Toll Gate on Saturday, February 13, 2021, is a crass abuse of the fundamental human rights of Nigerians to peaceful protest.

“February 13, 2021, is another sad day on human and peoples rights as #Endsars protesters were inhumanly arrested and shoved by the Nigerian police.

“It is very sad to note that the Buhari-led government relishes romancing and negotiating with Fulani murderous militia masquerading as herdsmen but repeatedly remains brutish and lethal on the defenceless and peaceful protesters in Nigeria. This is unacceptable.

“Killer bandits are treated with executive negotiations, rewards and hospitality whilst the defenceless protesters are arrested, brutalised, maimed, stripped and treated like condemned armed killers for peacefully demonstrating against incompetent leadership and clueless governance”, Mr. Paul, stated.
