Girls’ School in Abuja Shuts Down for Fear of Attack by Bandits

Due to worsening insecurity and fear of attack by bandits, the Federal Government Girls College, Bwari, Abuja, on Friday, instructed parents to pick their children from the school. Earlier this week, a source told FIJ that the military prevented criminal Fulani herdsmen from making entry into Bwari after killing at least eight people in a neighbouring community. Some school administrators in some Abuja communities, afraid that their facilities would be invaded by bandits, killing and abducting staff and students, closed down. “Yes, I see some students who attend boarding schools around Bwari area returning home. They said that they were told to return home because of the insecurity,” said an Abuja resident who does not want to be named. Over 200 unknown men suspected to be bandits were dropped by a truck in Sabon Wuse area of Niger State, a border town with Bwari in Abuja, Leadership newspaper reported. But the Kaduna State government, according to a report by Premium Times, claimed that the people seen were unarmed Fulani herders moving with their families from Niger to their permanent based in Jos and Bauchi.

Slain Akwa Ibom job-seeker emerges top performer in her graduating class

Iniubong Umoren, the Akwa Ibom job-seeker who was raped and killed a few days ago by a man who had lured her with a fake job interview, has emerged as a top performer in her graduating class in the Department of Philosophy, University of Uyo, Uyo. Miss Umoren, 26, is seventh among the top graduating students in the 2018/2019 class, with a GPA of 4.12, according to the final result released by the University of Uyo. Idorenyin Esikot, associate professor and acting head, Department of Philosophy, University of Uyo, who confirmed the authenticity of the result to PREMIUM TIMES, said Miss Umoren, with such remarkable performance, would have possibly been employed as a lecturer in the department after her mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. She was some few points away from making a first class, Mr Esikot said on Saturday in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, in Uyo. “She was a very committed and focused student, very hard working. In fact, she was very versatile because apart from her academics, she was a footballer, playing for our female team. “She was very social and dependable; she wasn’t the kind of student that would play around. Whatever she does, she was very committed,” he said. Mr Esikot said Miss Umoren’s tragic end was a personal loss to him. “Anytime I remember it, it’s like a nightmare. Very unfortunate,” he said. “If she had been alive and wanted to come into the (teaching) profession, she is the kind of student we would encourage to come into the profession. Because that is a student that never failed a course and was always doing well. Those who know my department, before you can come out top the way she did, then you must agree that she was really hard working. “We have some of our colleagues, who are lecturers (today), who graduated with less GPA than her,” Mr Esikot said. The police had arrested 20-year-old Uduak Akpan who has reportedly confessed to the rape and killing of Miss Umoren. The suspect, described as a serial rapist, had buried Miss Umoren’s body in a shallow grave in his father’s compound. The police and the Akwa Ibom State Government have promised to ensure the slain woman gets justice.

Unknown gunmen kill 13, raze police stations in Akwa Ibom, Rivers

Gunmen suspected to be members of Indigenous People of Biafra, working in collaboration with the Eastern Security Network on Saturday attacked a Divisional Police Headquarters in Odoro Ikpe in Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and killed six persons. It was gathered that the police station was set ablaze and operational vehicles and other valuables destroyed in the attack which occurred in the early hours of that fateful day. The Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the attack said five police officers and a wife to a police officer were killed. He said the police authority in the state is already in Ini LGA for an on-the-spot assessment of the attack. “Yes, there was an attack at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Odoro Ikpe, in Ini Local Government Area. Six persons including five officers and a wife of an officer were killed. I am at the station as we speak,” he said. Our correspondent reports the attacks is latest in the series of attacks against security personnel by suspected members of IPOB and ESN in the state. It was gathered that no fewer than 11 security personnel have been killed and police vehicles and others infrastructures destroyed in the renewed onslaught against the security operatives in the state. The Chairman, Ini LGA, Mr Isreal Idaisin, has roundly condemned the invasion adding that necessary steps have been taken to restore normalcy. In an unsigned statement that is already trending on the internet, he said the armed bandits invaded the police station with sophisticated weapons. “The gunmen who came in two buses and a Sienna, numbering more than 40, arrived Ini LGA with sophisticated weapons and broke into the police facility at precisely 2:45 am, killing five policemen on duty, burning vehicles while inflicting injuries on others.” He alleged that the police officers who attempted to repel the gunmen were overrun. He however commended the youths of the LG whom he said were proactive in raising the alarm which helped to reduce the number of casualties. Seven officers killed as gunmen attack police stations in Rivers Gunmen have killed seven police officers in Rivers state. Nnamdi Omoni, Rivers police spokesman, confirmed the incident on Saturday. He said the attack occurred on Friday night at two police stations and a checkpoint, adding that vehicles belonging to the Rivers command were also set ablaze. Two of the attackers were also said to have been shot dead. “The incident which led to the death of seven Policemen occurred last night at about 2030hrs, where unknown gunmen driven in two branded Hilux vans, attacked the special checkpoint at Choba bridge, where in a surprise attack, killed two Policemen on duty and set ablaze a private car belonging to one of the Policemen,” Omoni said in a statement. “A similar attack was launched at Rumuji Police Station by the same hoodlums who killed two Policemen on duty and burnt a Police patrol vehicle. However, a stiff resistance by the Police prevented the hoodlums from gaining access into the Police station. In the course of exchange of fire, two of the attackers were fatally wounded and died on the spot. “The third attack at Elimgbu Police Station was equally resisted by the Police, though three officers were killed in that attack, but the serious fire engagement made them to abandon their bullet riddled Hilux van, while they escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds with a snatched Sienna bus. “The continued engagement by the Police, also forced them to abandon the Sienna car they were using to escape at the Refinery junction, while their remnants again escaped with bullet wounds.” The police spokesman added that the corpses of the deceased officers have been deposited in the mortuary, and calm has returned to the area. He also noted that Eboka Friday, Rivers police commissioner, has launched an investigation into the incident, while a police team is currently on the trail of the attackers. “It is pertinent to note, that in all three attacks carried out last night, no Police Station/formation was burnt. Regrettably, a total of five assault rifles were lost in the incident,” he said. “The Public is hereby enjoined to increase their security consciousness and report any person or persons with gun wounds to the nearest Police Station.” Despite a curfew imposed in Rivers to forestall such attacks, the latest incident comes days after nine security operatives of the army, police and the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) were killed at various checkpoints around the state.

EndSARS: Witness Plays Video That Claims Army Shot Protesters At Lekki Toll Gate

The Lagos State judicial panel on restitution for victims of SARS related abuses resumed sitting on Saturday with the continuation of the testimony of an EndSARs co-ordinator, Serah Ibrahim. Serah came along with several videos, some of which she said she shot personally with her iPhone. One after the other, she played the videos which according to her demonstrates that soldiers shot at peaceful protesters on the night of October 20. As she played the videos, she explained to the panel that soldiers shot at the harmless protesters and even took away some of the dead bodies. She specifically mentioned that one of the active protesters, Lekan Sanusi was thought to be dead and the soldiers took away his body. She later found out that he was taken to MRS Hospital at Bonny camp where an unidentified nurse helped him to escape. Serah also played videos of some persons who suffered gunshot wounds from bullets allegedly shot by the military with protesters surrounding them and trying to tend to their wounds. When asked if she could authenticate the videos as to the time they were taken and the location, she mentioned that anyone could do this using Google Drive and she proceeded to demonstrate how it could be done. The videos of two mothers who claimed to have lost their children at the protest ground were also played. The videos were contained in the flash drive Serah Ibrahim tendered at the last sitting of the panel. Serah is expected to continue her testimony on May 15. Serah’s testimony is the latest development in the controversy that has trailed the events at the Lekki toll gate on the night of October 20. The army has repeatedly denied that it fatally shot at protesters and the Federal Government has said reports of a massacre at the toll gate was fake news. “The purveyors of fake news and disinformation succeeded in deceiving the entire world that there was mass killing in Lekki, even when till date, not a single body has been produced and not a single family or relative has come out to say their child or ward was killed at Lekki toll gate,” Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said at a press briefing in November. But witnesses, including Nigerian songwriter and musician, Obianuju Udeh, better known as DJ Switch, have insisted that the army took away bodies at the protest ground. Amnesty International reported that 10 persons died during the event, a figure disputed by the Nigerian government. The US government, in a human rights report released in March, said “accurate information on fatalities resulting from the shooting was not available” as at the end of 2020. The EndSARS protests were one of the largest street demonstrations since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999. The protests, mostly championed by young people, started as a campaign against police brutality but quickly metamorphosed into a rallying cry against bad governance.

I believe in one Nigeria, says Akeredolu

The Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, Rotimi Akeredolu has said he believes in one Nigeria. Akeredolu has therefore urged Nigerians to continue to coexist peacefully and pray for the continuous unity and peace of the nation. The Ondo state governor, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde in Akure said Nigeria’s Unity is her strength. He charged the people to continue to work for the progress of the country, adding that irrespective of ethnic backgrounds, Nigerians are one. Olatunde said the governor spoke at the 52nd Ascension of Mount Horeb 2021 of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church (Worldwide) held at the Church Galilee, Ilorin-Ibadan Expressway, Orile-Igbon, Oyo State. While noting that the country is very important to all, the Governor urged the congregation to pray for peace and tranquillity in the country. “Our country is very important to us. I believe our unity is our strength. It is important that those of us on this holy ground pray for our nation. ” Let’s pray to God to allow peace reign in our land. All these problems of banditry and kidnappings should end. Let us seek the face of God. “There is nothing that is beyond prayers. Our God is powerful. Let us to the path of God. Obey him and serve him. He does communicate with us if our heart is pure,” the statement reads The governor who commended the Church for conducting its programmes in various languages being spoken in the country said it is a reflection of the fact that Nigerians are one.

Pentagon to Buhari: US won’t relocate Africa Command to Nigeria

The United States has said there is no plan to relocate its Africa Command from its current base in Germany to Nigeria or any other part of Africa despite the worsening state of insecurity in the region. The US gave the response barely two weeks after the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), appealed to the US government to consider relocating AFRICOM to Africa to assist Nigeria and other adjoining countries to combat worsening terrorism, banditry and other security crises. The President made the plea in a virtual meeting with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on April 27. Germany-based Africa Command (AFRICOM) is the US military headquarters that oversees its operations in Africa. Buhari’s request followed a series of recent military casualties in Nigeria’s decade-long fight against Boko Haram terrorists, fresh expansion of the insurgents’ bases to Niger and Nasarawa States, and heavy waves of abductions and killings by bandits in the North. Buhari said, “The security challenges in Nigeria remain of great concern to us and impacted more negatively, by existing complex negative pressures in the Sahel, Central and West Africa, as well as the Lake Chad Region. “Compounded as the situation remains, Nigeria and her security forces remain resolutely committed to containing them and addressing their root causes. “The support of important and strategic partners like the United States cannot be overstated as the consequences of insecurity will affect all nations, hence the imperative for concerted cooperation and collaboration of all nations to overcome these challenges. “In this connection, and considering the growing security challenges in West and Central Africa, Gulf of Guinea, Lake Chad region and the Sahel, weighing heavily on Africa, it underscores the need for the United States to consider relocating AFRICOM headquarters from Stuttgart, Germany to Africa and near the Theatre of Operation.” However, the US government on Thursday ruled out any plan to relocate AFRICOM from its current base in Germany to Nigeria or any part of Africa. According to the United States Department of Defence’ Pentagon, previous studies have shown that the cost of relocating AFRICOM from Germany to Africa is very huge. In an emailed response to Saturday PUNCH, the Pentagon said although it would continue to value Nigeria and other countries in Africa as important partners, the American government would not consider relocating AFRICOM to any part of the African continent at the moment. This newspaper had asked if the US would consider Nigeria’s request to relocate AFRICOM to the continent. “It would be inappropriate to speculate on any future actions. However, at this time, moving this headquarters (AFRICOM HQ) to Africa is not part of any plans, but USAFRICOM’s commitment to their mission, our African and other partners, remains as strong today as when we launched this command more than a decade ago,” US Pentagon spokesperson, Ms Cindi King, said. King also ruled out any plan to consider Buhari’s request in an ongoing global US defence review. She said, “Although there is an ongoing Global Posture Review, the relocation of Combatant Command headquarters is outside the scope of its assessment. In the case of AFRICOM, previous studies have concluded that the cost associated with the relocation of this headquarters is significant and likely to incur the expense of other engagement opportunities and activities that more directly benefit our valued African partners. “We greatly value the partnership with Nigeria and appreciate President Buhari’s recognition of the United States’ positive contribution to African peace and security, as well as other regional partners that have made similar past pronouncements. The United States remains committed to continuing our close partnership with African countries and organisations to promote security and stability.”

Hadiza Bala Usman: NPA remitted ALL surplus funds

Twenty-four hours after refuting allegations of failing to remit the operating surplus of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to the consolidated revenue fund (CFR), Hadiza Bala Usman was suspended as the managing director of the NPA. In a letter dated May 5, 2021, a copy of which was obtained by TheCable, Usman told Ibrahim Gambari, chief of staff to the president, that the purported failure of the NPA to remit an outstanding balance of N165.32 billion from 2017 to 2018 was a misrepresentation of facts. She said that contrary to the figures given by the budget office as outstanding operating surplus, the NPA had remitted all that was due to the CFR — as stipulated in the fiscal responsibility act of 2007. However, it was too late by the time her letter came as the cold war between her and Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation who supervises NPA, was already on the cusp of boiling over. PROBING THE NPA’S BOOKS After a failed attempt to get external auditors to audit NPA’s books — which Adolphus Aghughu, the auditor-general of the federation, said had been audited — Amaechi wrote Buhari via a March 4 letter to complain that the NPA had not remitted an “operating surplus of N165 billion to the consolidated revenue fund account (CFR) from 2o16 till date”, citing information from the budget office. Acting on the letter and subsequent correspondences, Gambari asked the suspended NPA MD to forward records of the agency’s remittance of operating surplus. By then, Amaechi had furnished the presidency with financial records provided by the budget office, in which NPA’s net profit was listed as N133.08 billion (2017), N88.79 billion (2018), N73.92 billion (2019) and N71.59 billion (Q1 – Q3 of 2020). ‘NPA HAS REMITTED ALL THAT IS DUE TO THE GOVERNMENT’ In her response to Gambari, Usman faulted the net profit as listed by the budget office, saying it was in excess of the actual amounts and that it was contrary to the template provided by the fiscal responsibility act. In a March 2 letter to the ministry of transportation, the budget office had said that the NPA’s operating surpluses were N133.084 billion and N88.79 billion for 2017 and 2018 respectively. But on the contrary, Usman informed the presidency that the NPA had N76.782 as operating surplus for 2017 and N71.48 billion for 2018 in its financial statement prepared in line with the fiscal responsibility act. “Accordingly, the figures so provided by the Budget Office of the Federation as the Operating Surplus for the respective years on which basis they arrived at the shortfall are derived from submission of budgetary provision not the actual amounts derived following the statutory audit of the Authorities financial statements,” she said. “The Authority’s (NPA) computation of its remittances to the CFR are concluded arising from numbers from Audited Financial Statements using the template forwarded to the Authority from the Fiscal Responsibility Commission as herewith attached and not budgetary provision. “The authority has remitted the full amount due to it to CFR for the periods of 2017 and 2018 arising from the Operating Surplus derived from the Audited Financial Statement for the period totalling N76.384 billion as evidenced in attached treasury receipts. “The Authority has remitted a total of N82.687 billion for the period 2019 and 2020 pending the audit of the financial statement at which point the amount so computed arising from the value of the Operating Surplus in the audited financial statement will be remitted to the CFR.” However, by the time the presidency could consider her letter, Amaechi was already meeting with Buhari to make a final case for her suspension, as earlier reported by TheCable.

El-Rufai reaping from evil plotted against Rivers, says Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, says the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government has dragged Nigeria 50 years backward due to its “abysmal” performance. Wike alleged that the APC had mismanaged the opportunity Nigerians gave them to make a difference and deserve to be voted out in 2023. Nigerians gave them to make a difference and deserve to be voted out in 2023. READ ALSO: We didn’t bathe for 56 days in kidnappers’ den –Freed Kaduna students The governor also alleged that Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State was reaping from the evil he plotted against Rivers State in the past He stated this when the Vice President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, Obiageli Ejezie, led other leaders of the association to the Government House, Port Harcourt, to confer on him the 2019/2020 Good Governance Award for his outstanding achievements in project execution in Rivers State. The governor, in a statement by his media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, told the delegation that in 2015, the APC convinced Nigerians that they were going to offer better governance than former President Goodluck Jonathan. He argued that after assuming the top office, the ruling party had continued the country on the path of retrogression. “There can’t be good governance without security and this is based on the rule of law. All of us are living witnesses that in 2015, it was alleged that the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan could not perform. “So, Nigeria needed a change. What has happened to the change? They have taken Nigeria back by 50 years,” he said. Wike wondered for how long the APC-led Federal Government would allow the needless killings and abduction of innocent Nigerians to continue. The governor said, “Now, you wake up every morning, students are being kidnapped in so-and-so state university; people have been killed in so-and-so state. It has become the norm. “Just wake up in the morning and the first thing you will see on the front page of the dailies is ‘10 people have been kidnapped in Niger State; 20 have been killed in Zamfara State, five have been killed in Imo’ and this happens virtually every day. So, where are we heading to?” He accused the Federal Government of instigating security crises in Rivers, saying the APC governors had visited the Presidency to demand the withdrawal of a commissioner of police from Rivers. “Now, in order to cause crises in our state, they brought the CP they wanted. At the end of the day, God did not allow them to have their way. But see what is happening in his state now. When you are plotting evil against somebody, evil will visit you. And that is the problem Governor el-Rufai is facing today in Kaduna State.’’ “I remember when I came in 2015, when they were honouring one of their friends as a minister on live television, Channels, el-Rufai had the temerity to say (my) election could not stand in Rivers State and that they would kick me out,” Wike said. Earlier, Ejezie said the Rotary board of directors had approved Wike as best suited for the 2019/2020 Good Governance Award for his sustainable projects, saying there were “many laudable and sustainable development projects of your government scattered across Rivers State.” Meanwhile, efforts to get the reaction of el-Rufai’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Muyiwa Adekeye, to Wike’s allegation proved abortive as multiple calls to his number did not go through, while a text message sent to his number was still not answered as of press time.

Stop Blackmailing Those Criticizing You, Catholic Bishops Tell FG

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has urged the federal government to address the insecurity ravaging the country rather than spending time trying to blackmail anyone who criticises the present administration. The President, CBCN, Augustine O. Akubeze, gave the advice on Friday in a statement titled “Urgent call to the Federal Government to be open to criticism in addressing the pervading insecurity in Nigeria”. While saying that the recent coup scare was uncalled for, Akabueze said many Nigerians who experienced the brutality of the military are aware that a return to such days is not the prayer or desire of Nigerians. “A Nigerian does not need to be a registered political party card-carrying member before speaking about the failing economy, the daily killings and kidnappings of students, older men and women; babies and infants; people being killed in IDP camps and even in their homes by insurgents. “Every reasonable Nigerian is sick to the stomach to read or hear of a Governor running from insurgents who want to kill him in the State where he is constitutionally the chief security officer. “Nigerians are tired of hearing of bandits taking youths in the University and executing some of them, while others are kept to be used to bargain for ransom,” Akabueze said. According to him, in the midst of all these, the Presidency recently stated that some religious leaders and some Nigerian politicians are plotting to destabilise the country; and the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army noted that there is no plan by the military to take over democratically elected persons. “While we reject any call for the destabilisation of Nigeria or military takeover, we nonetheless say to the Federal Government of Nigeria, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, there is no need to focus your energy, time and resources in any form of propaganda against religious leaders who disagree with your performance. “There is no need to spend so much of your time trying to blackmail anyone who criticises your Government. “We speak out because we do not want Nigeria to collapse. “We are not speaking out for the APC Government to fail we are speaking out so that Nigeria will not fail,” he added. He also said that the federal government must be transparent with every Nigerian in the struggle to revive the economy, industrialise the nation, objectively deal with corruption and significantly reduce the high level of insecurity and unemployment. He said that the Catholic Church wants the federal government to call for a meeting of all stakeholders to have a sincere discussion on the way forward and that such discussions must seek how to implement the much talked about restructuring and devolution of power down to the local government level.
