Shekau is dead, says ISWAP

The Islamic State, West African Province (ISWAP) has confirmed that former Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, blew himself up after refusing to surrender following the invasion of his hideout on Wednesday, May 19. This was contained in an internal message from ISWAP leader, Abu Musab Albarnawi, whose recording was obtained by HumAngle on Friday. message from ISWAP leader, Abu Musab Albarnawi, whose recording was obtained by HumAngle on Friday. Synagogue: What TB Joshua said before he died BREAKING: Synagogue confirms death of T B Joshua In his address, which was delivered in Hausa, he described Shekau as “the leader of disobedience and corruption” and said his fighters rejoiced over his death. He said the former terrorist leader, who took over after the death of Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf in 2009, was apprehended “in the most humiliating manner.” “This was someone who committed unimaginable terrorism. How many has he wasted? How many has he killed? How many has he terrorised? But Allah left him alone and prolonged his life. When it was time, Allah set out brave soldiers after receiving orders from Amirul Muminin (leader of the believers),” he said. The ISWAP, which broke away from Shekau’s Boko Haram faction in 2016, disagreed with the late extremist leader over his excessive use of force, especially on Muslims in areas under his influence. According to Albarnawi, the interim leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ordered them to take action on Shekau for deviating and killing “believers.” ISWAP fighters then took their arms, travelled through the Sahara, went into Shekau’s enclave and engaged in a gun battle with his followers. He initially escaped and roamed the bushes of Sambisa for five days, where he suffered seriously. However, ISWAP fighters were able to locate him. He still managed to run away a second time but was chased down, Albarnawi narrated. The rival fighters urged him and his followers to repent, assuring him that if the ISIS leader decided to make him their leader after he had surrendered, they would have no choice but to obey. According to Albarnawi, “Shekau preferred to be humiliated in the afterlife than getting humiliated on earth.” Source: HumAngle.

BREAKING: Tompolo ‘reluctantly’ welcomes Akpabio’s consultations, calls for calm

Ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), has “reluctantly” accepted the outcome of the consultative meeting between stakeholders of the Niger Delta and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio. This is coming hours to the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued by the Niger Delta warlord, Tompolo, last Sunday. The ultimatum had demanded the immediate constitution of a substantive board for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), otherwise, activities in the region will be disrupted. The full statement, signed by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), the Ibe-Ebidouwei of Ijaw Nation reads thus: “RE: PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI AND SENATOR GODSWILL AKPABIO SHOULD AS A MATTER OF URGENCY CONSTITUTE THE SUBSTANTIVE BOARD OF THE NIGER DELTA DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION (NDDC). “I issued a seven-day ultimatum on the above subject matter on Monday, May 31st, 2021. There were lots of concerns expressed by Nigerians on this matter within this period, hence machineries were put in place for consultations among Nigerians, especially from highly placed individuals and organizations from the Niger Delta region, including the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio. “As I expressed in my press statement of Monday, May 31st, 2021, I came into this matter because of love for the region and Nigeria. I make bold to say that I cannot be compromised by money and other material things. However, the only thing one can do for Nigeria in these trying times, where all the six geopolitical zones are in turmoil, is to pray to God for peace and tranquility, particularly for the economic hub of the country, the Niger Delta region. “Therefore, I welcomed the consultative meeting of our revered Traditional rulers from the region, Delta State Government, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) led by its President, Professor Benjamin Okaba, leaders from the Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Ndokwa and other Nationalities with the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Akpabio in attendance, at the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oporoza town on Thursday June 3rd 2021. “The outcome of the meeting has been made known to the public by the Minister. He promised profusely to start the process of the constitution and inauguration of the substantive board of the NDDC immediately (from Friday, June 4th 2021), and that he should be allowed to drive the process to an end on or before the end of June 2021. “As it stands now, I have accepted the outcome of the meeting reluctantly. It is pertinent to state at this juncture that, I do not want anything to disrupt the relative peace we are enjoying in the region. It was on this premise that I accepted the outcome of the meeting. The ultimate goal in this issue is for the Minister to abide by the promise he has made to start the process of constituting the NDDC board now. Government shenanigans must be put away in this matter as constituting the NDDC board is very dear to the heart of the people of the region. “I wish to thank all our revered traditional rulers for their fatherly role they played in the matter, my father, ground leader of the Ijaw Nation and elder statesman, Chief E. K Clark for his concern and intervention in this matter, the Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and his deputy, Barr Kingsley Brutu Otuaro for their intervention, The President of Ijaw National Congress, Professor Benjamin Okaba, The Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rare Admiral A. Hassan, Leaders of the various Ethnic Nationalities for their solidarity, Youths of all the Ethnic Nationalities from the region, Women groups and others too numerous to mention here. I say a thank you to all. “It is my prayer that the needful be done to develop the Niger Delta region as seen in advance climes.”

Not only Twitter — how FG’s directive will affect Facebook, Netflix, WhatsApp

The suspension of Twitter in Nigeria may be the beginning of what the government had planned to do over the years — the regulation of social media. But is Twitter Inc. alone affected by this directive? No. On Friday, the federal government directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence licensing all Over-the-Top (OTT) and social media operators in Nigeria. The statement, made by Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, came as the government suspended the operations of Twitter, the microblogging and social networking service. “The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria,” the minister said. Twitter’s suspension comes days after a post by President Muhammadu Buhari on the 1967 civil war was deleted by the microblogging platform. In a series of posts on Twitter on Tuesday, the president had condemned the attacks on government facilities in the country, and referencing the civil war, threatened to treat those “bent on destroying” Nigeria “through insurrection” in “a language they understand”. Defending Buhari’s post, the information minister had condemned the deletion of the president’s post and accused Twitter of “double standards”. WHAT ARE OTT SERVICES? Over-the-Top (OTT) services are essential media services offered directly to viewers via the internet. Most often, such contents can be streamed on computers, smartphones, and other devices. They bypass cable, broadcast, and satellite television platforms – the type of media services that NBC traditionally act as controller or regulator. In Nigeria, Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, FB Messenger, Skype, iROKOtv, and Netflix are currently running on OTT. HOW WILL THE DIRECTIVE AFFECT SOCIAL MEDIA OPERATIONS? One of the avenues through which Nigerian citizens air their views on the actions and policies of government have been through social media platforms. These platforms have given voice and hope to countless citizens on various issues, including politics, opportunities, and economic powers worldwide. With the regulation, the government will put the users’ right on the line by setting modalities for OTT service operations in the country. The modalities may hamper citizen’s ability to freely and safely express themselves on those platforms. For instance, India set out internet modalities for the operations of social media giants, which include Facebook, Twitter and others, to take responsibility for every user post on their channels. These rules are also obtainable in China, where social media platforms have to censor content before appearing online. Social media companies are also at the mercy of the federal government and could be ordered by the authorities to remove any flagged content. Adeboye Adegoke, a digital right activist at Paradigm Initiative, said the implications are enormous and beyond the big companies like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp. “The government is targetting the bigger players, but the policy has far implications for the smaller ones, most especially indigenous players providing OTT services like VBloggers, Influencers, etc., providing learning, tutorials, and other consultancy services,” he said. “These are the people we need to be more concerned about. “If you have ever been bothered that most leading tech companies are foreign, you will then be faced with bigger issues. Regulating OTT services would kill potentials of young tech genius in the country because the government is not allowing a conducive environment.” For Netflix, iROKOtv, and other streaming platforms, the authorities can also determine the content they stream for the Nigerian audience. Any anti-government content may not scale through. Just like the government’s current battle with Twitter, users’ activities on other social media channels may now come at a cost.
