Ajaokuta steel to be completed soon -Minister

Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, says Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd. will function to capacity before the regime of Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) comes to an end. Adegbite made this known during the News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja. He said that the federal government had made effort to ensure that the Russian company that built the steel industry would come to Nigeria to conduct technical audit of the company. He said that the Russian team would have been in Nigeria since 2020 for the technical audit but COVID-19 pandemic distorted the plan. NAN recalls that the minister had earlier said that a 60-man team from Russia would arrive in Nigeria to start technical audit of Ajaokuta steel. The agreement on how to revive the steel company was reached during a meeting between Buhari and President Vladimir Putin in Russia in 2019. The Russian government had nominated TPE, the original builder of Ajaokuta Steel Company, to conduct technical audit of the steel company to ascertain the level of work remaining to be completed on the steel company. However, the minister said that the main purpose of the steel company when it was conceived and built was to produce liquid steel, adding that the National Iron Ore Mining Company was set up at Itakpe in Kogi to feed it with iron ore. He explained that liquid steel could be used for building aeroplane and car engine parts, among others. “Ajaokuta Steel Company has not been able to produce liquid steel since it was built –the little hurdles we need to address. “The steel company has worked in the past whereby billet were imported to produce reinforcement but that was not what Ajaokuta steel was built for,” he said. He also said that the ministry had recently trained some youths in the metal sub-sector on national development to ensure human capital development with special emphasis on vibrant metals operators. He said that the workshop was an appropriate strategy meant to launch and mainstream youths into the sector, adding that the three weeks intensive workshop was to work towards the development of the sector. NBA expresses worries over impersonation of lawyers in Imo

The Owerri branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has frowned on the way people impersonate lawyers in the state. According Punch, the Chairman of the Anti-Impersonation Committee of the NBA in the branch, Ihediohanma Akponye, who spoke when members visited the state Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, said fake lawyers were causing huge economic loss to the state. The lawyer said the NBA was unhappy at the spate of fraud-related cases coming up in the state. Akponye stated, “We have observed that Imo State is now riddled with fraud caused by persons that impersonate lawyers. This is very disturbing to the bar, and as a committee, we are committed to ensuring that impersonators face the full wrath of the law. “The Anti-Impersonation Committee of the NBA is determined to identify and flush out fake lawyers and unscrupulous elements, who illegally engage and carry on some businesses that are the exclusive preserve of members of the legal profession, thereby hurting the trust of the public and the economy of the state.” He commended the police in the state for arresting an alleged fake lawyer recently, adding that more persons, who impersonate practitioners of the profession should be apprehended and prosecuted. Akponye said, “It’s important that we say this that only those called to the Nigerian bar are legally qualified to practice as lawyers in Nigeria. Even if you are a graduate, but as long as you are not called to bar, you can’t practice as a lawyer. That your spouse, father or mother is a lawyer does not also qualify you as a lawyer or to parade the NBA stickers.” On the chairman’s entourage to the CP were Ifeoma Ihesie, Peter Oduba, Eke Onyeforo, T. O. B. Okey, Blaise Iwunze, E. C. Onyema, and Williams Okere.

Buhari has hidden agenda to stay beyond 2023 – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the assertion by the Presidency that Nigerians will be waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari “to show the way in 2023” has further heightened public apprehensions of self-succession plot by “the cabal in the Presidency.” The main opposition party was reacting to a statement by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, who suggested in Daura on Tuesday that the PDP and the opposition parties would not be allowed to win the 2023 election. Speaking shortly after observing the Eid prayers in President Muhammadu Buhari’s hometown, Shehu had said: “The President enjoys unshakable support not only in his hometown but also across the country and it is enough for the opposition to admit that the President matters a lot for the ruling party and Nigerians in general. Again he constitutes a political obstacle they cannot dismantle come 2023. ‌ “We believe the PDP and other opposition parties are nursing false hopes of taking power comes 2023. “The masses will never abandon President Buhari’s leadership and the APC. I assure you that in 2023, the masses will be waiting for the President to show the way in courtesy of what he has been building for the country in terms of infrastructure and wellbeing of young people in the country. “Nobody will take the risk by inviting another party to come and take over in 2023.” But in a statement issued by Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP National Publicity Secretary, the party said Nigerians were jolted when the presidential spokesman, ShehuGarba, publicly announced in Daura, Mr. President’s hometown, that President Buhari “constitutes a political obstacle” which those who seek to succeed him, come 2023 “cannot dismantle”. It said such a statement by the Presidency, which is in its last lap of the second and final tenure in office, was not only provocative but also smacks of plots to derail our constitutional democratic order. The party added: “Perhaps the comment by the Buhari Presidency explains why there has been a heavy onslaught against our institutions of democracy as well as the Electoral Act. “Our party and indeed the majority of Nigerian across board and even across party lines caution President Buhari’s handlers to note that such plots cannot stand as it will be firmly resisted by the people. “Shehu Garba should be bold enough to announce that President Buhari will be on the ballot for another term in 2023 and watch how Nigerians will respond. “The 1999 Constitution (as amended) is clear on the tenure of office of the President and such cannot be extended under any guise or conditions whatsoever. “It is imperative for Shehu Garba to note that Nigerians have been subjected to the worst forms of hardship under the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration and will never allow anything that will keep this administration in office a day beyond May 29, 2023.”

President Buhari Urges More Nigerians To Embrace Farming

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged more Nigerians to embrace farming, saying he was surprised to hear that only 2.5 per cent of arable lands in the country is being cultivated. The President said this while addressing journalists at his residence on Tuesday in Daura, the Katsina State capital, after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers. According to him, the Presidential Economic Advisory Council had notified him that only a small percentage of the land in the country had been used for farming, directing security outfits to work more with communities to create a more friendly environment for farmers. The President mandated security outfits to be more relentless in maintaining peace in the country, and ensure a more harmonious relationship with communities so that they can glean intelligence. He said the security situation had improved considerably overtime in the North East and South South, and efforts were being made in North Central and North West, assuring that more will be done to fish out those that had been troubling the peace of the nation and citizens. Earlier at the prayer ground, the Emir of Daura, Faruk Umar Faruk, called on citizens to be more supportive of the President so that he can actualize his vision of improving security and boosting the economy. “Since the President came into power we have seen some positive changes in the country,” the Emir said. “May God continue to strengthen the President with good health and courage to bring peace to the country. God will not allow Nigeria to see shame,’’ he said. “God has been keeping the country and he will keep the country.’’

BREAKING: Soludo, Uzodimma, Wike funded Kanu”s extradition to Nigeria, IPOB alleges

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma, his Rivers counterpart Nyesom Wike, former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Prof Charles Soludo and Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige were some of individuals who supported and funded the extradition of its leader Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya. It further alleged some other businessmen from Imo and Anambra States, including billionaire Emeka Offor also betrayed Kanu. The group added all of them to its ‘traitors’ list, saying they betrayed Kanu allegedly because of their political and economic interests. It insisted Ngige was part of the ‘plot’ but absolved Anambra Governor Willie Obiano and Victor Umeh from involvement in any move against Kanu as earlier alleged. In a statement from its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB maintained the ‘saboteurs’ colluded with the Federal Government to extradite Kanu. The statement reads in part: “Through in-depth investigations and intelligence gathering, we, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), have uncovered more Biafran traitors involved in the betrayal of our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his subsequent abduction and extrarendition from Kenya to Nigeria. “Other people involved will soon publish to the public, our intelligence units are still working to unravel them some Igbo business men and women who were involved in the abominable act in Anambra State and Imo State will soon be exposed to the public. “We, however, wish to absolve Gov. Willie Obiano from any involvement in the act contrary to our earlier statement based on preliminary investigation. “Gov. Willie Obiano was found to be innocent after our intelligence unit conducted further investigations on him. We regret any harm our earlier statement might have caused him. “We don’t act based on rumour or mere propaganda senator Sir Victor Umeh is innocent of the accusations against him, the voice note going viral where they mentioned Victor Umeh is not true and our people should disregard that voice against him anybody involved in such abominable act should desist from such and repent because IPOB will get him or her who are responsible for this cowardly act. “We are responsible enough to admit our error any time any day. So, we apologise to Gov. Obiano and Victor Umeh. “Meanwhile, the following individuals based on our in-depth investigations so far played key roles in the betrayal of our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. “They not only betrayed him but contributed funds to sponsor his extra-ordinary rendition to Nigeria. They include: Emeka Offor, Gov. Nyesom Wike, Chris Ngige Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma and Professor Chukwuma Soludo. “They decided to trap our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because of their political and commercial interests which they consider above the overall good and emancipation of Biafrans. “We want to make it clear to them that Biafra will hold them responsible for whatever happens to our leader. They cannot stop us.”

Ohanaeze to FG: No peace without justice over Kanu, Igboho

Apex Igbo sociocultural group Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has told the Federal Government prosecuting the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu and Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho would amount to nothing without justice. It also expressed surprise at the efficiency with which security operatives arrested Kanu and Igboho without applying similar zeal in treating Boko Haram kingpins, herdsmen and bandits in the North West among other criminal elements. In a statement on Tuesday in Enugu by its spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze said as long as the Federal Government fails to address issues of injustice, many “other Kanus and Igbohos will sooner than later emerge”. According to Ohanaeze, Kanu and Igboho who wittingly or unwittingly are seen as heroes by their people were products of unjust society. The statement reads: “Nigeria security operatives have in recent time shown that they have teeth and can bite. “The question on every mouth is whether they can apply similar zeal in treating the Boko Haram Kingpins; Fulani Herdsmen; the North West Bandits, etc. The foregoing selective efficiency of the security operatives elicits the reason for the making of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho. “One of the departing admonitions of Pope John Paul II, was “if you want peace, then work for justice” It is an age old maxim founded on reason, experience and truth that the only way for peace to reign in society is for justice to be seen to be served to all. “We recall that Chief Sunday Igboho emerged in the scene because he could not endure the daily menace of the herdsmen in the Yoruba localities for a very long time. The herdsmen would kill, maim and rape women at random. “All entreaties to the presidency for a swift action against the AK-47 wielding herdsmen appeared to fall on deaf ears. Then Igboho in a patriotic heroic zeal intervened to save the rural farmers, women and children from the daily menace of the herdsmen. “There is no gainsaying the military operations against the Boko Haram in the North East of Nigeria but the rate at which the herdsmen destroy farm crops, attack villages, kill the indigenes and forcefully occupy their ancestral lands is most callous, unconscionable and condemnable. This is where the intervention of the presidency is most needed; and of course, the Igboho paradox. “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor has maintained the need for the presidency to embrace equity, justice and fairness in public policy formulations and execution. And that the various forms of agitation in Nigeria is an effect and not a cause in itself. “The cause of the agitations is the obvious injustice in federal public policies. “Measures should rather be taken to address the causes of the agitations and only then can Nigeria have peace and sustainable economic growth. “On the other hand, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho who wittingly or unwittingly are now seen as heroes by their people, are but the products of unjust society. “Therefore, a concerted effort in search of the Kanus and the Igbohos without addressing the basis of the agitation is an effort in futility. Otherwise other Kanus and Igbohos will sooner than later emerge”.

FAKE NEWS ALERT: Sunday Igboho not released

Contrary to trending reports that embattled Yoruba Nation Agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho has been released and flown to Germany, he is still being held by the Beninoise authorities, The Nation can confirm. The Nation reports Igboho was arrested at an airport in Cotonou on Monday night. Professor Wale Adeniran of Ilana Omo Odua, umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, confirmed this in a zoom conversation organised by Heritage Multimedia TV monitored by our correspondent on Tuesday evening. Adeniran, a pioneer Commissioner of Education in Osun State and former Director of Institute of African Studies at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, refuted the trending reports that he has been released. He said: “I have just spoken with his lawyer. The lawyer has visited the location where he (Igboho) is been held. “He was not allowed to see him (Igboho) but they confirmed to him that they are holding him in that location. “He was asked to come back tomorrow (Wednesday) by 8:00am to see him. “I asked him hope they are not going to play a funny game of secretly extraditing him, the lawyer told me it is not possible. “We filed an application for political asylum for him over a week ago. With that in process, he cannot be legally extradited from Benin republic. I am very confident about that. “I handle the application myself with the immigration lawyer and he assured me that since that application has been filed, he cannot be extradited. I think we should be rest assured that he will have the opportunity to see him tomorrow.” Adeniran carpeted those falsely reporting he has been released. He said: “Why should people be putting out false information that he has been released which is injurious to this struggle and to the welfare and wellbeing of igboho?” Adeniran disclosed four international lawyers from Benin Republic, Nigeria, France, Britain are on the case but when they saw the trending news, they had to call him to confirm. “When the lawyers saw the false information, they relaxed, I had to tell them it is false. So can you see the damage,” he added.
