Lightning kills 76 in India

Several people reportedly taking selfies near a historical fort in northern India were among nearly 80 killed by lightning strikes during the early stages of the annual monsoon season, officials said on Monday. Deadly lightning strikes are common in the vast Asian nation during the June-September deluge, which bring respite from the summer heat across the northern Indian plains. Of the 76 killed, at least 23 people died in the mostly desert state of Rajasthan, including a dozen who were watching the storm cross Jaipur city from watch towers near the famous 12th-century Amer Fort late Sunday, a state disaster department official told AFP. “It was already raining when the people were there. They huddled in the towers as the rainfall intensified,” a senior Jaipur police officer, Saurabh Tiwari, added. He said up to 30 people were on the towers when the lightning struck. Emergency teams were checking if any victims had fallen into a deep moat on one side of the towers. “Some of the injured were left unconscious by the strikes. Others ran out in panic and extreme pain,” he added. Officials told local media some of those killed were taking selfies during the storm. Every year, tens of thousands of tourists visit the Amer Fort, a medieval complex on a hilltop outside Jaipur also known as the Amber Fort. People had been flocking to the fort, which gives a panoramic view of the tourist city of Jaipur, after several weeks of intense heat in the state. In the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, at least 42 people were killed in lightning strikes on Saturday and Sunday, officials said. They did not give further details about where they had been killed. Another 11 people died in the central state of Madhya Pradesh over the weekend, an official at the state’s disaster control room told AFP. Two of them, who had taken their camels and sheep for grazing, were sheltering under a tree when they were hit by lightning, the official said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the victims’ families would be offered compensation. Last month, 27 people were killed and four passengers on a flight were hospitalised after severe turbulence during monsoon storms the eastern state of West Bengal. Nearly 2,900 people were killed by lightning in India in 2019, according to the National Crime Records Bureau — the most recent figures available. The monsoon is crucial to replenishing water supplies in South Asia, but also causes widespread death and destruction across the region each year. (AFP)

Justice Yusuf had last Wednesday ordered the arrest of Mr. Solagberu by security agents for allegedly exhibiting conduct unbecoming of a lawyer after court proceedings by making uncomplimentary remarks in some television stations and social media platforms. The judge equally expressed displeasure over the lawyer’s decision to communicate his withdrawal from the case through a letter delivered by his secretary to the court. He, however, accepted Solagberu’s apology through his counsel, Kehinde Eleja (SAN) and discharged him accordingly. He adjourned the case till Tuesday, June 13, 2021, for the continuation of the hearing.

IMOPOLY staff kick as senior, junior lecturers earn same salary

Members of staff of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo in Ohaji/Egbema council area of the state, have expressed displeasure over what they termed “improper placement of salaries” by the authorities of the institution. It was gathered on Monday that senior lecturers were currently receiving the same salary as junior ones owing to the wrong salary placement. A reliable source from the polytechnic expressed bitterness about the issue, adding that the situation was generating ripples in the school environment. He said, “Presently at IMOPOLY, a junior lecturer is earning the same salary as senior lecturers. The question is who are the cabals behind the missing money? Who placed these senior lecturers wrongly and for what purpose?” However, the IMOPOLY Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Ugorji Onyemachi expressed his indignation that since some of the members were promoted to the position, the salary scale that follows such promotion had not reflected. He wondered if promotion could only be seen on papers without having any impact on salaries. He pointed out that such an act had lingered in the institution for years and remained untreated. The ASUP Chairman, while commending the state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for increasing their salaries from 70 per cent to 100 per cent, added that such executive decision was able to save them the stress of incessant protests.

Miyetti Allah: South-West govs are hiding Igboho

One of the umbrella bodies of herdsmen in Nigeria, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, has alleged that South-West governors are “hiding” wanted Yoruba activist Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho. Spokesman for the group, Saleh Alhassan, stated this in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Monday. But Donald Ojogo, an aide to the Chairman of South-West Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, said it is demeaning for the governors to respond to Miyetti Allah’s accusation. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Department of State Services on July 1, 2021, raided Igboho’s Ibadan residence in Oyo State, detained 13 of his followers, and killed two of the activist’s associates in a “gun duel”. Igboho, a spearhead of the separatist agitation for the Yoruba nation, escaped the bloody raid and was subsequently declared wanted by the secret police on allegations of stockpiling arms to destabilise the country, which he has since denied. The whereabouts of the Yoruba nation agitator, who gained popularity in January, following his eviction notice to suspected killer herders in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State, had since been unknown. Speaking with The PUNCH on Monday, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore spokesman said the DSS should have raided Igboho’s house earlier than it did. Alhassan, however, advised the activist to turn himself in to security operatives because he would be forcefully apprehended. He said, “It is in his (Igboho) own best interest if he submits himself peacefully so that he can face justice. Why is he running? Is he not a revolutionary? He should submit himself before they get him because as it is now, he has been declared wanted, he should present himself to the nearest police station.” The group’s spokesman also alleged that the six governors in the South-West region are hiding Igboho. He said, “All his (Igboho’s) actions are political; he is being used. His godfathers in the South-West should bring him out. “The security agencies are speaking the language he understands, they will get him. I know the governors are hiding him but they (security agents) will get him. “The (Nigerian) State has declared him wanted. He is not more than the state. The governors keeping him should produce him.” “He declared a republic; that was a rebellion. How can you be threatening the sovereignty of the (Nigerian) State and you still have the guts to be walking around and be organising rallies?” Alhassan queried. However, Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said it is belittling for the governors to respond to the allegation by Miyetti Allah. When contacted for a reaction on the allegation by the herders’ group, Ojogo told The PUNCH that “It is not necessary, absolutely demeaning for elected governors to engage an association in a media banter.” Meanwhile, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, another herders’ group in the country, kept mum on Igboho’s imbroglio. “We don’t have any comment on the matter; we don’t talk on political or security issues,” MACBAN Secretary-General, Usman Baba-Ngelzerma, told our correspondent when contacted on Monday.

N’assembly complex flooded after downpour — second time in 3 weeks

For the second time in three weeks, the main building of the national assembly complex played host to a flowing stream of sorts, following a heavy downpour on Monday. The source of the leak was the dome at the complex, which houses a main lobby that leads to the chambers of the senate and the house of representatives. On June 22, the roof had leaked after a heavy downpour, and workers at the complex quickly swung into action to drain the pool of water. However, unlike the previous incident, the lawmakers were not present in both chambers because Monday is not a legislative day. Following the downpour, workers were seen using mops to redirect the water that had leaked into the building. After the initial incident, Senate President Ahmad Lawan had said the flooding of the complex is a “clear” confirmation that the edifice needs repairs. The senate president said the complex is long overdue for rehabilitation, adding that since it was built, there has never been major repairs on it. “The fact there was a leak to me is a clear testimony, confirmation and vindication of the position the national assembly took initially,” Lawan had said. “Everyone knows that this place is overdue for rehabilitation.” In 2019, the national assembly had budgeted over N30 billion for the renovation of the complex. This sparked off criticism as some Nigerians frowned at the sum earmarked for the renovation. Meanwhile, no maintenance work has been carried out on the edifice even after the sum budgeted was reviewed to about N9 billion.

The elder brother of the provost, Nasiru Mainasara told Channels Television that the bandits have been in contact with the family and that negotiations are ongoing for a reduction in the amount demanded. He however confirmed that some prominent members of the community have told the family to stop the negotiation and assured them of his safe rescue. The State Police command however denied knowledge of an ongoing negotiation between the family and the abductors. Spokesperson Mohammed Shehu said the command has deployed search and rescue team to go after the abductors and ensure safe return of the victims.

Imo: Democracy under threat ― Abaribe

Minority Leader and Senator representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe has formally reacted to last Thursday suspension of certain lawmakers in Imo State House of Assembly. Speaker of the State Assembly, Paul Emezim had announced the suspension of the minority leader, Anyadike Nwosu, and five other lawmakers. Honourable Emezim said the suspension was indefinite as he accused the axed lawmakers of “unparliamentary conduct.” ‌ Emezim, also dissolved all standing committees of the house and removed the Chief Whip, Authur Egwim, who was replaced with Obinna Okwara. Abaribe in a statement signed by his media aide, Uchenna Awom decried the development in Imo State and others which he noted was capable of stifling dissenting voices in Parliament. He said the suspension in Imo State House of Assembly suggested circumvention of democratic ethos. He said: “The beauty of democracy he added is embedded in the provision of checks and balances, accommodation of all sheds of opinion and allowing free canvassing of viewpoints in the constitution. “Democracy does not stop at the national level. It must permeate all levels of government i.e, wards, local governments, state and other democratic institutions. In all of these, everybody must enjoy the freedom of expression and association as guaranteed by our Constitution. “So, it is undemocratic and smirks of dictatorship, any attempt by anybody, particularly a parliament for that matter to abhor minority functions and stifle opposition voices, just because you want to pander to executive whims. “It is reprehensible to even contemplate suspension of a minority leader because he questions the executive on things that seem to be antithetical to democratic norms.” The Minority Leader, therefore, advised the State Assemblies to always see every party represented on the floor as partners in progress, whose viewpoints are all geared towards achieving good governance. “Without dissenting opinions, democracy loses its kernel. The essence of liberal democracy is the accommodation of different viewpoints, which is warehoused in the interplay of the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary independently in the political system,” Senator Abaribe added.

UNIZIK students protest fee hike

Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state on Monday protested alleged increase in tuition by the university authorities. The students, who marched round the school environment with placards, also blocked a portion of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway. But Acting Head, Information and Public Relations UNIZIK, Chika Ene, refuted alleged increase in tuition of returning students of the institution for the 2020/2021 academic session. She urged students, staff and the public to treat the report, which she said was targeted at causing unrest and destabilising the university as fake. But the students, during the protest, insisted the increment was true, alleging the university authorities’ connivance with the Student Union Government over the purported increment. One of them, a third year student who spoke to The Nation on condition of anonymity, said they decided to embark on the protest as they could not bear the increment any longer. “When they increased the fees to over N50, 000 last year, we were asked through the SUG executive to bear with the school, promising they will revert to the initial fee of about N26, 000. “But to our greatest surprise, instead of asking us to pay the old fees as promised, we saw additional amount to what we paid last year.” One of the students who spoke with The Nation in confidence, alleged student union government in the institution was a rubber stamp and weak. He questioned why the institution was being addressed as Federal when students pay tuitions higher than obtainable in state-owned universities. According to the source, first year students would pay as high as N156, 000; second year over N80, 000, third year almost N60,000 and final year up to N70,000. However, Acting PRO of the institution, Mrs. Chika Ene denied the allegations, stating such things had never happened in UNIZIK to the best of her knowledge and would never happen She described the Vice Chancellor as a god- fearing gentleman who would never allow such things under his administration, and urged the students to have the fear of God in them Addressing the students in front of the administrative block, Anambra Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Peter Onyenweife, assured them his executives would never be party to any form of increment. He appealed to the students to ensure the protest was peaceful and within the confines of the campus environment. He said: “Any student protesting outside the gate is on your own. Anybody can release gunshots from anywhere, and once that’s done, we’re all gone, and the aim of the protests is defeated. “I’m standing here as your representative. We can never be a party to any form of increment. That’s why we’re here to plead with you…our voices must be heard. “If the same group of students were the same students that gave me support in 2019, I want to assure you that I won’t for any reason support anything that will hurt you. “I want to put my integrity on the line, in all honesty, the VC is currently in Abuja. But the DVC, academics who’s the second in command will brief us on his behalf.” The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Fedrick Odibo, who addressed the students on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, said the institution’s fees structure had been pulled down while discussion with the union was ongoing.
