Mbaka to FG: Release Nnamdi Kanu

The Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria, Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka, has called for the unconditional release of leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. The Catholic priest was reported to have made the call during a sermon on Sunday, at his adoration ground. Mbaka said he made the request when some government agents, whom he did not mention, allegedly came calling with some offers. He said, “Some persons came to me some time ago that they have two slots for me. I told them I don’t need such offers because I have a slot that I need. They said I should mention what I need. “My first request was that they should release Nnamdi Kanu because since you people arrested him, we have lost many lives, so of what use is his arrest if after he was arrested, kidnapping hasn’t stopped in the North? Arresting him doesn’t solve the problem.” “Where were the nation’s security agencies when several students were kidnapped?” he asked while urging the government to use the same energy used in arresting Kanu to arrest kidnappers. Mbaka, while attributed the rise in criminality to the activities of the politicians who purchase arms for the thugs during elections, advised the government to use the same vigour used in arresting Kanu to arrest insecurity, poverty, unemployment, activities of herdsmen, injustice and nepotism.

I Didn’t Kill Super TV CEO’, Chidinma Makes U-Turn

Chidinma Ojukwu, the suspect arrested in connection with the death of Michael Ataga, CEO of Super TV, has denied killing him. Ataga was found dead days after checking into an apartment with the suspect in Lekki, Lagos. The suspect had fled the scene of the crime until she was arrested at her father’s house in Yaba, Lagos. When she was paraded by the police in June, the 300 level student of the University of Lagos had said she killed him while he was trying to force himself on her. She had sought forgiveness, saying she did not want to die. “I regret killing Mr Ataga. I don’t know what my future holds but I don’t want to die. Please, I don’t want to die because of this case. I have not killed before.” “I totally regret everything I did and I am sorry. Mr Ataga’s family, I am deeply sorry for what I did. If I had my life back, I wouldn’t do anything like that. I am deeply sorry and I hope you forgive me,” Chidinma had said at the time. But in a video which is currently in circulation, Chidinma said she knows nothing about Ataga’s death. “I didn’t injure anybody. I don’t know who must have come into the apartment, and did that… I don’t know who that person is. I don’t know what happened. I did not kill him,” the suspect said. She, however, admitted that they spent time together, drinking and smoking before he died. Chidinma claimed that she was not inside the apartment at the time he was killed.

‘Information blackout’! Nigerian Newspapers Unite against Gov’t Censorship

Nigerians who love to get their news from print newspapers woke up on Monday morning to see front pages of their dailies with a picture of a human with a caged mouth. This action is based on a message from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) about the adverse effects of the controversial media bills in the national assembly. The controversial bills are the Nigerian broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) Act amendment bills, the latter of which gives the President the right to appoint the Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Press Council (NPC). Also, all other members of the board shall be appointed by the president on the recommendation of the Minister of Information. There is also a new bill to regulate social and online media that the government is trying to introduce In protest against the media bill, Nigerian Newspapers used their platforms to speak out against government’s planned “Information Blackout”. “It’s not just against the media….it’s about society’s right to know, your right to be heard,” the caption read. Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, has always defended the bills and in June, he urged lawmakers to grant full regulatory powers over internet broadcasting and all online media outfits to government, arguing that the country’s laws must not be subservient to international telecommunication union treaties. Alleged fraud: Court threatens to issue arrest warrant on ex-Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, threatened to issue a warrant of arrest against former Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, if she failed to appear in court by the next adjourned date. Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the warning after Dr Hassan Liman, counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the alleged N5 billion trial against Oduah and eight others told the court that the former minister and one other defendant were not in court to take their plea. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court had earlier fixed Feb. 9 for the arraignment of the former minister and eight others. But due to the fact that Oduah, who currently represents Anambra North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, was not served with the court processes then, the arraignment could not go on. The court also fixed April 19 for the arraignment but due to the strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), the matter could not hold. The lawmaker is facing a fraud charge alongside others in a suit with number: FHC/ABJ/CR/316/20. The anti-corruption agency is alleging that Oduah misappropriated public funds to the tune of N5 billion while serving as Minister of Aviation. When the matter was called, Liman, who informed that the case was scheduled for arraignment, said the anti-corruption agency had carried out the court order made on Feb. 9. “On Feb. 22, 2020, my lord made an order of substituted service on the 5th and 6th defendants in the trial. “We have carried out the order my lord,” he said. Justice Ekwo, however, said that since the court did not sit on the last adjourned date, today’s proceeding should be for a report on the development and another date would be fixed for arraignment. “How many witnesses are you calling,” the judge asked. Liman, who said the EFCC would be calling at least 32 witnesses in the trial, said while some of the witnesses were within the court jurisdiction, others were not. He added that the agency would produce two witnesses in the first day of trial commencement. The lawyer called the court’s attention to the fact that Oduah, who is the 1st defendant, and another defendant listed as 4th in the trial were not in court. “I will fix another date for arraignment and if they like, let them not come,” Ekwo said. The judge, who told the prosecution lawyer to put his house in order, said “once the plea is taken, I am proceeding with the trial.” Ekwo, therefore, warned that any defendant who was not in court in the next adjourned date would be issued with an arrest warrant. “Apart from the 2nd and 3rd defendants, the order defendants are absent today. This is a note of warning that anyone who is absent will be issued with a warrant of arrest,” he ruled. He adjourned the matter until Oct. 19 for arraignment and trial.(NAN)

Ohanaeze faults Governor Bello on rotation of presidency

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has faulted a recent statement credited to Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to the effect that “rotational presidency is unconstitutional,” and that “Nigerians should be allowed to make their choices for the best candidate to emerge for the top post.” Ohanaeze, in a statement issued and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia disclosed that it was reacting to Bello’s speech at the maiden edition of the Governor Yahaya Bello seminar for political and crime correspondents in Abuja on Friday. Ohanaeze observed that “Governor Bello, no doubt, has demonstrated a remarkable obsession with ambition shortly after providence paved way for him to be sworn in as the governor of Kogi State in 2015 at an impressionable age of 40. ‌“There is no doubt that Bello has a date with destiny going by a smooth political ascendancy that life has presented to him.” However, Ohanaeze expressed fears that the youthful governor “is embarking on a political adventure that lacks both conscience and principle. The immortal words of Uthman Dan Fodio that ‘conscience is an open wound and only the truth can heal it’ should serve as a moral compass to Nigerian leaders. Noah Webster had admonished that all the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the inner still voice or conscience.” Going down memory lane on the history of rotation, the apex Igbo group averred that “Governor Bello was still a student, studying accountancy at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria when an agreement was reached between the North and the South with respect to Rotational Presidency. The meeting was held at the National University Commission (NUC) Conference Centre, Abuja in 1998. Dr Chuba Okadigbo spoke on behalf of the South while Alhaji Abubakar Rimi spoke for the North. The likes of Dr Alex Ekwueme, Chief Solomon Lar, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, etc were at the meeting. “The Nigerian statesmen examined the merits and demerits of zoning and rotation of power between the composite zones in Nigeria. At the end, it was resolved that the presidency be conceded to the South and that it would rotate between the South and the North in the interest of equity, unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.” Ohanaeze added that, “The foregoing was the basis for the emergence of presidential candidates of the mainstream political parties from the South West in1999. Since then, the patriotic and peace loving Nigerians have adhered to the rotation principle such that at the end of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo second tenure, President Musa Yar’Adua was elected; Goodluck Jonathan and then President Muhammadu Buhari.” Ohanaeze explained that “the above expose informs the resolution by the Southern Governors that the South should produce the next President of Nigeria after President Buhari.” Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor, therefore, advised Bello that it would serve his interest better if he supported the resolution by his southern colleagues; more so as he is still young. Ohanaeze enjoined Bello to embrace the ethical functional relationship between the morality of an agreement and the legality of the constitution. Ohanaeze contended that for clarity sake, “morality is the universal foundation of Laws. On the other hand, law should be seen to stand in defence of morality.”

State Police Is Not The Answer To Insecurity – Ex-Police Chief

A former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, has voiced concerns against calls for state police across Nigeria. As insecurity worsens in many parts of the country, State Governors and other stakeholders have called for a restructuring of the police. Under the current arrangement, the police is controlled and funded by the Federal Government but states have some room to shape its operations within their jurisdiction. According to Mr Inalegwu, improved funding for police operations will yield better results than restructuring. “I am not an advocate, today, of state police because of my own experience as an officer who has served in various commands,” he said. Mr Inalegwu suggested that state police can lead to widespread abuse of force by local politicians. He said: “Have you heard that in some places, some politicians cannot even visit their homes? And when they visit, things happen. People could come around your eyes and they begin to fire. “Have you heard any local government election they conducted that any other party won apart from the party in that state, where you have the State Independent Electoral Commission? “We can criticise the Nigerian police force, but let’s criticise them in context. “I believe that the Nigerian police officer is the most competent, the most diligent, the most capable officer, but the environment he finds himself . .

Edo won’t fight Oba of Benin over returned artefacts, says Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration won’t engage in “disrespectful exchanges” with the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, over stolen artefacts. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie. This was in reaction to a statement issued by the Oba of Benin asking the Federal Government to temporarily take custody of 1,130 stolen Benin artefacts that are about to be repatriated from Europe. This is as the monarch stated that the rightful destination of the artefacts should be the Benin Royal Museum. The monarch said this following a statement issued by the Edo State Government which revealed that a “transformational” museum would be built in Benin to house the artefacts upon their return. Reacting, Ogie in the statement issued on Monday allayed fears of a conflict between the state government and the Oba of Benin, adding that Governor Obaseki will maintain his immense respect for the monarch. The statement read, “The attention of the Edo State Government (EDSG) has been drawn to the widely publicised media statement issued by the Palace of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II. “It is concerning that the statement appears to have created the impression that there is a major conflict between the interests of the EDSG and His Royal Majesty with regards to the laudable national milestone of having our highly valued artefacts returned home to Nigeria. “The Government of Edo State and the Governor have always acted transparently and in consonance with existing Federal and State laws in all matters relating to the proposed return of the artefacts and monuments. “The actions of the government thus far on this issue have been driven by selfless, patriotic considerations and in the best interest of Edo State and Edo people.” Ogie said, “The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has displayed and will continue to display immense respect for our traditional institutions and therefore will continue to make effort to secure a private audience with His Royal Majesty to discuss his concerns.” He continued, “The Governor has consequently ordered that on no account should anyone, whether in government or acting independently, engage in disrespectful exchanges and/or altercation with our revered Royal Majesty and the Benin Royal Palace. “Governor Obaseki, meanwhile, expresses his gratitude to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) and Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and other officials of the federal government for their patriotic and tireless efforts that have brought us to the verge of this eagerly anticipated achievement which has remained elusive for over a century. “While thanking and congratulating the Federal Government, the President, the Minister, the Royal Palace of the Oba of Benin and all stakeholders who have contributed to the successes so far recorded in this endeavour, the Governor assures that he will continue to work assiduously with all local and international stakeholders for the eventual and final return of these valued records of our great and glorious heritage back to Benin City for the benefit of ALL Edo people, Nigerians and the black race.”
