JUST IN: Heavy security as Abia court set to deliver judgement in Nnamdi Kanu vs FG suit

Heavily armed security operatives have cordoned off the roads leading to the premises of Abia State High Court complex located on Ikot Ekpene Road Umuahia as the court is set to deliver judgement today on the suit filed by the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu against the federal government. As early as 7:00am , detachment of security personnel had been deployed around the court premises. All the roads leading to the court have also been barricaded, thus forcing motorists and pedestrians to take alternate routes. Journalists and staff of the court as well as people accessing the premises were asked to produce their identity cards before allowing access to the premises. The presiding judge, Justice Benson Anya had during the hearing last year ordered security agents to stop interfering with those coming to the court during the court hearing of Kanu’s suit. He said that the security operatives were creating unnecessary tension by their action. Meanwhile, lawyers and various stakeholders were sighted around the court premises including Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor who is leading leading a team of other lawyers to for Kanu’s. Sighted also was the Counsel to the Chief of Army Staff, Amos Tory among other defendants lawyers. Newsmen from major national and international media houses including the BBC were also around in their numbers. Among the stakeholders was Chief Ugo Chinyere, Igboayaka O Igboayaka, among a host of others.

BREAKING: FG recommends N302 per litre petrol price by February

The federal government may increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, to N302 per litre in February 2022 as part of the recommendation of the National Economic Council (NEC) in November 2021. TheCable understands that this is part of the government’s plan to fully deregulate the PMS prices, eliminating monthly subsidy payments with provisions to ensure fair competition in the market. Petrol price is currently between N162 and N165 per litre in Nigeria. The recommendations were put forward by the NEC ad-hoc committee interfacing with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on the appropriate pricing of PMS in Nigeria. The report was presented by Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state and head of the committee. The committee was established last year by NEC headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to look into the dwindling revenues of states. Other members of the committee include Godwin Obaseki, Kayode Fayemi, and David Umahi, governors of Edo, Ekiti and Ebonyi states respectively; as well as Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); and Mele Kyari, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC); Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning. In May 2021, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had also recommended N385 per litre — but stakeholders, including the federal government, rejected the recommendation. The recommendation has since been reconsidered and dropped by the committee. According to the new report, the committee recommended full deregulation of PMS prices by February 2022 — raising the price by about N130/140 per litre. It also recommended that all retailers should post PMS prices at all times on a designated website and smartphone app — and they are expected to post price changes no earlier than within 15 minutes of the price change. With the recommendations, the committee added that the federal government would save N250 billion per month on petrol subsidy removal. “At current rates, the PMS subsidy is reducing transfers into the federation by about NGN 250 billion per month, and could, if PMS subsidies are not eliminated, result in deductions of NGN 3 trillion in 2022,” the committee’s resolution reads in part. “The large-scale time-limited (6-months) cash transfer proposed as a way of transferring the subsidy “directly to the people” would cost N600 billion but would by paving the way for the elimination of PMS subsidies, enable the federation to recover N3 trillion in revenues that would otherwise go to PMS subsidies. “If PMS subsidies are eliminated by February 2022, N250 billion in deductions would have been incurred, but the remaining N195 billion in anticipated PMS subsidy deductions could be redirected towards FGN funding of the cash-transfer programme.” The NEC committee also recommended a market-based pricing mechanism, as another option, that would ensure petrol price ceilings at least once a month. Abacha Deceived Activists, Prominent Nigerians To Get Into Power – IBB

General Sani Abacha, who ruled the country from 1993 until his death in 1998, deceived politicians to get into power, according to General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB. In an interview with Trust TV, IBB spoke on how Abacha outfoxed them and got into power. Abacha, whom IBB described as his “very good friend”, also served as the Chief of Army Staff during the latter’s military regime from 1985 and was subsequently appointed the Minister of Defence under the same government in 1990. IBB said, “Abacha’s government was very smart. They knew who were the most vociferous discussants about the election, about the coup, about June 12 and so on. They started talking to them and sold a dummy to them and encouraged them to get rid of the interim government; ‘when we get rid of the interim government, we will bring you back to come and take over your democracy so that a civilian government would be installed’. “They sold that dummy to the public and to some prominent persons within the society, and when Abacha stepped in, there were drumming and sighs; ‘Good thing! Next thing is going to be a democratically-elected government’. I knew, we knew, that it wouldn’t be because the argument was: ‘Why should I risk my life only to come and hand over power to you?’ That was what happened.” He also admitted that despite being close allies, Abacha’s military coup did not surprise him. “I knew it will come as a surprise because even though I was outside – outside the service – I knew what was going on,” he explained. Abacha had served as the Minister of Defence and the most senior military officer had come to power by ousting the interim national government formed by IBB and headed by Ernest Shonekan, by forcing the latter to resign. In a widely circulated broadcast on November 17, 1993, Abacha announced to the nation that he had taken over from Shonekan as a result of sociopolitical uncertainties as the time.

Delta APC spokesman Imonina dumps party

The Spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, Delta State chapter, Ogheneluemu Sylvester Imonina, has dumped the party. Imonina tendered his resignation in a letter titled ‘Resignation Of My Membership Of All Progressives Congress And Position As Acting State Publicity Secretary Of The Party.’ In the letter, he said, “I want to use this opportunity to thank the leaders of my ward, LGA, APC, Isoko Nation and members of the party across the state for the support given to me while I contributed my quota to the development of the party. “To everyone who supported me, I say a big thank you.” He, however, failed to state if he was defecting to another party.

Some APC leaders became hostile over my criticisms, says Salihu Lukman on his resignation

Salihu Lukman, former director-general of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), says some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have become tyrants. TheCable had reported how Lukman resigned his position over the controversy surrounding the party’s convention planned for February. Confirming his resignation in a statement on Wednesday, he said since the buildup to the 2019 elections, internal contests in the party have worsen. The former director-general said he would continue with his campaign to return APC to its founding vision. “I can confirm that it is true I have given my resignation to Forum Chairman, His Excellency Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. I restrained myself from making any public statement on the matter because I am still awaiting acceptance,” he said. “I have privately responded to many enquiries from party leaders, friends, family members and clarified that it is true that my decision to resign my position is to enable me to continue with the campaign to return APC to its founding vision, which is to build a party that is not only democratic but oriented based on social democratic principles. “Since the buildup to the 2019 elections, internal contests in the APC began to degenerate. “Some leaders became intolerant and conducted themselves almost as tyrants. Every campaign to get the leadership of the party to commence the process of internal reform was resisted. “Some party leaders in the bid to emerge as candidates of the party for offices became hostile.” According to him, on hearing about his resignation, Bola Tinubu, former Lagos governor, reached out and commended him for championing campaigns to reform the party. “One of the party leaders who honoured me with an invitation to meet him late on Tuesday, January 17, 2022, was Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said. “He commended me for championing the campaigns to reform the party and expressed shock that some members of Forum were intolerant to criticism. “He argued that any party leader who will not accommodate critical opinion on fundamental issue such as respecting decisions and especially a matter as sensitive as organising the National Convention, which is the highest organ of the party, such a person is not a democrat and shouldn’t be associated with a party envisioned to be progressive such as the APC.”

N20bn: Tinubu, Alpha Beta ex-MD discuss out-of-court settlement

A former Managing Director of Alpha Beta Consulting, Dapo Apara, the All Progressives Congress leader, Bola Tinubu; and the current Managing Director of the company, Akin Doherty, have begun discussions on a possible out-of-court settlement following allegations that Tinubu ordered the transfer of over N20bn from Alpha Beta to some private business accounts. The lawyer to the plaintiff, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), said this before the High Court of Lagos State sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square on Tuesday. During the proceedings, Adegboruwa informed the court that the order made on November 2, 2021, for substituted service of all court processes on Tinubu had been complied with by the court bailiff. Adegboruwa stated that the bailiff served Tinubu on November 24, 2021, at his No. 26 Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, address through the courier service of DHL, adding that an affidavit of service had been filed by the bailiff to confirm this position. The court looked through its records and confirmed the position as stated by the lawyer. Adegboruwa also informed the court that the parties and their counsel had met on several occasions with a view to resolving all the issues in controversy amicably and to this end, proposed terms of settlement had been exchanged, which might have explained the absence of the defendants and their counsel in court. The senior advocate then urged the court to grant more time for the parties to consolidate on their settlement talks. Justice Aishat Opesanwo subsequently adjourned the case till March 24, 2022. It will be recalled that Apara filed the suit early last year seeking to hold the defendants accountable for financial transactions in Alpha Beta. In the suit filed by Adegboruwa on behalf of Apara, the former MD said Tinubu controls Alpha Beta, a tax consulting firm that has exclusive rights to monitor and generate revenue on behalf of the Lagos State Government. Apara, who had in 2018 written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accusing Alpha Beta of N100bn tax fraud, asked the court to compel the firm to pay him his entitlements even as he alleged that Tinubu was the one that got him removed from his position for investigating the firm’s finances.

A 25-year-old housewife, Maryam Usman of Sheka quarters in Kano metropolis last Thursday committed suicide, the Kano Police Command has confirmed. The spokesman of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident happened while the deceased had relocated from her matrimonial home to receive medical care under the guidance of her parents at home. Niger Has Recorded 50 Attacks, Lost 220 Lives In January Alone, Says Gov

Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has said not less than 165 civilians, 25 security personnel, and 30 local vigilantes were killed within 17 days this year. The governor announced the figures after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday. He said his state recorded 50 attacks and loss of lives between January 1 and January 17, while not less than 300 communities were also invaded by bandits within the same period, while 200 persons, including three Chinese nationals, were abducted. He, however, expressed optimism that the state would witness remarkable improvement in security. The President had, on Sunday, asked the military to respond “robustly” to the cases of killings and kidnappings in Niger State and to give effect to the strategic objectives through the use of force. The governor said: “This afternoon, I came to visit Mr President to give him an update on the security situation in Niger State with regard to banditry activities, kidnapping, and cattle rustling among others. “We had a very fruitful discussion. We were able to review some of the invasions in the state. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you all. In the last few days, there have been a lot of activities in Niger State. Hopefully, in the next two weeks, we will see some relief with regard to banditry. “I also gave an highlight on some of the challenges. Of course, our size is a disadvantage, almost nine million hectares. We lost some forests. “In January this year alone, we suffered not less than 50 reported attacks and loss of lives, between 1st and 17th January. Within the same period, not less than 300 communities have been invaded by bandits. The number of people kidnapped is 200, including three Chinese nationals. We also lost some security personnel. Their number is 25. Unfortunately, we lost about 165 civilians and 30 local vigilantes. So, it’s a very dire situation that we have been battling since the beginning of this year. “But with the kind of zeal I have seen from our security agencies and all services. I’m very optimistic that the situation will be addressed. And hopefully, we should get a very peaceful state within the shortest possible time. “But there is still a lot of work to do. We share borders with Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kebbi States. And these bandits have the habit of hibernating between forests, moving from Zamfara to Kebbi, and Kebbi to Niger. They take advantage of the cattle routes which they already know. They move on motorcycles. And most the areas and communities they attack have no access roads. So, you cannot drive there. So, our response time is slow. “But going forward, there will be new strategies which I earlier mentioned. It will help us. But I can’t disclose some of those strategies. But basically, the States of Kaduna, Niger, Kebbi would have to work together to address the situation. “What I realize is that they have been taking us on a merry-go-round. When we deal with them in Niger, they move to Kaduna. When Kaduna deals with them, they move to Katsina. They have been hibernating in the forest. Some of these operations need to be handled simultaneously so that we get the result. “We are not happy and we are sad with the developments in these states. We are doing whatever we can, using kinetic and non kinetic efforts to see that we address the present situation.”

Nigerian-born Canadian minister suspended for calling police chief over traffic ticket

Kaycee Madu, a Nigerian-born minister of justice and solicitor-general of Alberta, a province in Western Canada, has been asked to step aside from his ministerial position after he called the police over his traffic offence ticket. Jason Kenney, premier of Alberta, announced on Tuesday via a tweet that he has asked Madu to step aside pending the outcome of a probe into the matter. Madu, who was appointed minister in August 2020, was pulled over on March 10, 2021, and fined $300 for flouting the country’s traffic and safety regulations. He was said to have been on his phone in a school zone. He subsequently called Dale McFee, Edmonton’s police chief, and discussed the ticket with him. The UNILAG law graduate had said he was not on his phone, alleging that he was a victim of racial profiling. The officer indicated that he had observed me driving while distracted, alleging that I was on my phone. I disagreed, stating that I was not on my phone, as it was in an inside pocket,” Madu had said. “Due to the timing of the incident, I wanted to ensure that I was not being unlawfully surveilled following the controversy surrounding the Lethbridge Police Service. I also raised concerns around profiling of racial minorities that was in the media at the time. “Chief McFee assured me that that was most definitely not the case, and I accepted him at his word.” McFee confirmed that Madu called him concerning the ticket, adding that the minister did not ask for it to be cancelled. Minister Madu did contact me via the telephone concerned about a ticket. But just to be very, very clear, he never asked to get out of the ticket,” McFee said. Madu was minister for municipal affairs before he was named minister of justice.

2023 Election: Corrupt Elites Don’t Want Another Buhari – Presidency

The Presidency has said corrupt elites in the country do not want “another Buhari” in 2023 because of their selfish agenda. The Media Aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Tuesday, said the President’s strong legacy would be difficult to dismantle. He explained the reasons why President Buhari cannot take a “business as usual approach” in governance. According to him, many of the political elites in the country cannot wait for the President’s second term in office to end as they wish for a return to the “good old days” of helping themselves to public funds with abandon. The statement read in part, “So many in the political elite of this country cannot wait for the President’s second term in office to end. They yearn for a return to the ‘good old days’ of helping themselves to public funds with abandon, the easy export of ill-gotten money to foreign bank accounts, of acting without responsibility, accountability, or censure. The last thing they want is ‘another Buhari’. “Even though the President will stand down after the election of a successor next year – whether that successor lives up to the exacting standards and example he has set or not – his legacy is strong and will be peculiarly tough to dismantle: “Courts that hold those before it fairly and properly accountable – regardless of their wealth or lack of it; the successful repatriation of stolen funds from decades of export abroad and its use to fund social empowerment, and welfare programmes for the poorest; reforms that have taken the steam out of centuries-long ethnic and tribal disputes – such as the farmer-herder clashes – long used to stoke ethnic and regional tensions by venial politicians for political advantage; and the protection of millions through an effective vaccine roll-out programme. “These are just a tiny handful of the achievements of the President. But, perhaps, his greatest achievement of all is to break the belief that Presidents of Nigeria take the office and use it to enrich themselves and their accessories at the public’s expense. “That wicked spell is broken for good. And it has offended politicians everywhere. They thought the state owed to them while the people provided for the state. Instead, they have witnessed how, when the state owes to them nothing, it provides for the people.”
