How Lack Of Money Almost Ruined My Convocation At UNN — Obi Cubana

Anambra-born businessman, Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has narrated his experience while on his way to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, for his convocation in 1999. In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, he shared a photo of himself, while narrating how he used a ‘night bus’ to travel from Abuja to Nssuka for the convocation. He wrote “1999, we were going to University of Nigeria Nsukka for our convocation ceremony from Abuja, in the company of some of my friends and classmates; Nze, Ultimate, Onwa, Ogali, etc!!! We entered a bus from Area 1 Garki Abuja to Dumez, near Suleja so we could enter the cheaper “night bus” instead of boarding from Jabi Park! “We got tickets for Mercedes Benz 1414 commuter vehicle, attachment! My Uncle, Zubby, bought me a pair of ‘schools’ shoes, having made him proud by making a 2:1 in the political science department! Inside the 1414 Benz bus, there was zero comfort, especially with the ‘attachment’!”(sic) While narrating his experience, Obi Cubana noted that during the trip that lasted for hours, they dared not dose off or rest their head, shoulder on anyone that paid for a ‘full seat’. Obi Cubana said, “You dare not sleep because if you happened to rest your head on the shoulder of a trader that had “full seat”…..na slap or punch, depending on mindset!!”(sic) The businessman further revealed that he later misplaced one leg of the pair of the shoe his uncle gifted him and that almost ruined his convocation. “We managed to get to Obollo Afor in the morning, where we would now take a bus into Nsukka. Getting to where we contributed money to stay for the entire convocation, I realised I lost one leg of the pair of my adored and priceless ‘schooles shoes.’ “It almost ruined my convocation!!! But today, here we are!!! Do people still enter “night bus”? Las las, this generation dey enjoy!!!”(sic)

Rising oil prices not good for Nigeria, says Sylva

Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources, says the increase in prices of global crude oil is not good for the country. Speaking on the rising crude oil prices in an interview with Bloomberg Television, Sylva said that Nigeria’s comfort zone in terms of oil prices was between $70 and $80 per barrel. On Thursday, the global oil benchmark, Brent crude, rose over 5 percent to trade at $102.27 a barrel with escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The minister said Nigeria was not gaining anything from the soaring prices. TheCable had reported that subsidy burden, pipeline shutdowns are among the reasons why Nigeria is not benefitting from high crude oil prices. “I’m hopeful the prices will move around, maybe $80, maybe $70. We are hoping it will come down to somewhere around $70 to $80, which will be sustainable for us to the end of the year,” he said. Last year, Nigeria agreed to voluntarily cut its daily crude oil production by 939,000 barrels between January and March after a meeting with the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies. TheCable had reported how subsidy payments, pipeline shutdowns affected Nigeria from benefitting from high crude oil prices. Sylva said the inability of Nigeria to activate the oil wells it shut down when OPEC instructed producing countries to cut production as well as the lack of investment in the upstream sector is affecting the country’s ability to increase production. He said Nigeria is losing at least 300,000 bpd to its capacity challenge. “We are working hard on that (production increase). What happened to us was the fact that we had to cut back at the time, and, of course, in such a way you can’t cut back mathematically,” he said. “So, you want to cut back 100,000 barrels that you shut out, maybe we’ll shut down about 200,000 to 300,000 barrels. So, at the end of the day, we over-complied because we just couldn’t achieve it mathematically. “In trying to cut down, we cut down too much. And now to come back, it’s not been easy for us to get the wells back to production.” According to the minister, a lot of additional investments would be needed to ramp up production, but he lamented that foreign funding was drying fizzling out for the industry. Answering questions on the supply of gas to Europe, Sylva said he was not aware of discussions with the United States for Nigeria to increase the supply of gas to Europe amid Russia and Ukraine tensions. According to him, if it has to happen, it would take time and investment. He said the country intended to begin supply to the continent through Algeria and Morocco in the near term.

Court to hear DCP Abba Kyari’s bail application on Monday

A federal high court in Abuja has fixed February 28 to hear the bail application of Abba Kyari, suspended deputy commissioner of police (DCP). On February 14, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) declared Kyari wanted “over his involvement in a 25kg cocaine deal”. Hours later, the police announced his arrest and subsequent transfer to the custody of the NDLEA. Kyari filed a fundamental human rights suit against the federal government, describing the drug trafficking allegations against him as trumped-up. On Monday, he approached the Abuja federal high court to seek bail on the grounds of ill health. The application was, however, not heard as Inyang Ekwo, the judge, ordered that the respondents be served with all court processes. He then fixed the hearing of the application for Thursday. However, at the court session, the application could not be heard. Cynthia Ikenna, Kyari’s counsel, told the court that she had served court processes on the respondents as directed on Monday. Although Mike Kassa, respondent counsel, acknowledged service of court processes, he said the application for bail was not included. He told the court that he has already served his counter affidavits on the applicant. But Kyari’s counsel insisted that the bail application was served on the federal government. She also said the proof of service is in the court’s records. The judge directed the applicant to serve the respondent a copy of the motion in court and stood down the matter for an hour. When the matter was called again, Joseph Sunday who announced appearance for the federal government, requested time to enable him respond to the motion. Consequently, the judge adjourned the matter to February 28. The NDLEA, on Monday, obtained an order to further detain Kyari and six others for 14 days.

Nude Videos: Court Strikes Out Charges Against Ex-Imo Gov

A Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out charges of cybercrime against a former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim. Justice Taiwo Taiwo on Thursday struck out the charges after the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) applied to withdraw the charges. A lawyer from the office of the AGF made an application to discontinue the charges, whereupon the court granted same and struck out the charges against Ohakim and associate, Chinedu Okpaleke. The office of the AGF took over the case from the Nigeria Police following a petition by one Chinyere Amuchinwa (née Igwegbe) over alleged threats by Ohakim and Okpaleke to release her nude videos over a N500m land transaction. The saga began in 2020 after Ohakim accused Amuchienwa of failing to account for his 2019 governorship campaign funds, which she countered by accusing him of land fraud located in Ikeja, Lagos. The police in 2021 arrested and detained Amuchienwa following Ohakim’s allegation of blackmail and pointing a gun at him at an Asokoro hotel. On Amuchienwa’s fresh complaint about imminent threats to upload her nude videos, the Legal/Prosecution Section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja filed criminal charges against Ohakim and Okpaleke accusing them of conspiracy to cause annoyance, criminal intimidation, and threat to upload nude pornographic videos of Amuchienwa. The police charge reads, “That you Chinedu Okpaleke ‘m’, Dr Ikedi Ohakim ‘m’, and others now at large, on or about the 13th day of August 2020, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did, by means of computer system or network, send a nude picture, indecent obscene or menacing characters to one Chinyere Amuchienwa ‘f’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention Etc) Act 2015.” The police said the alleged offences are punishable under Section 27(1)(a) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention etc) Act, 2005. section 140 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, 1968

China Says ‘Closely Watching’ Ukraine Situation After Russian Attack

China on Thursday called for restraint on all sides after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an attack on Ukraine, while saying the military operation should not be described as an “invasion”. Putin announced the launch of a major military offensive and ground troops crossed into the country from several directions on Thursday, with explosions heard in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. “China is closely watching the latest situation, and we call on all parties to maintain restraint and prevent the situation from getting out of control,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing where she was repeatedly asked if Beijing condemned the actions. Beijing has trod a cautious line on Ukraine as Moscow massed thousands of troops on the borders, and criticised the West for new sanctions after Russia ordered troops into two breakaway Ukrainian regions it now recognises as independent. Hua on Thursday refused to call the military action an “invasion”, labelling the term “prejudiced”, and dodged questions on whether China was in contact with Russian and Ukrainian leaders. “The Ukraine issue has a very complicated historical background” and was the result of “various factors,” Hua told reporters. China has blamed the United States and its Western allies in recent weeks for “hyping up” the crisis, with Hua saying at an earlier briefing on Wednesday that the US was “adding fuel to the fire.” The Chinese embassy in Ukraine on Thursday warned its citizens to be alert for “severe disturbances” and to stay home as much as possible.

Crypto market loses $250bn in hours as Russia attacks Ukraine

The value of the cryptocurrency market has fallen by $250 billion in a few hours after Russian forces launched an attack on Ukraine early Thursday morning. In a televised speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” designed to achieve the “demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine”. According to data from coinmarketcap.com, the global cryptocurrency market capitalisation stood at N1.55 trillion — a 10.4 percent decline over the last day. Cryptocurrency prices have continued to plunge since reaching record highs in November 2021. The recent volatility is driven by intensified tensions between Russia and Ukraine. At 9:04 am on Friday, Bitcoin, the most popular and world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation declined more than 7.6 percent in the last 24 hours to $35,274. Ether, the coin linked to the Ethereum blockchain and the second-largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalisation, also fell about 11.9 percent to $2,368.98. “Many crypto investors have been humbled by the last crash. They are hesitant to increase holdings given the tremendous uncertainty for risky assets,” Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA, wrote in a note to clients on Thursday. Moya predicted that bitcoin would likely continue to experience decent resistance from the $40,000 level as geopolitical tensions would prevent risky assets from mustering up much of a rally.

Nigeria Would Have Been In Crisis Without Buhari — Ngige

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Nwabueze Ngige, has stated that the country would have been in crisis if not for President Muhammadu Buhari’s “impeccable leadership qualities”. Chris revealed this on Wednesday after his induction as an honorary fellow of the Institute of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Corporate Governance (INSLEC) in Abuja. He stated that if not for Buhari’s leadership qualities, the country would be in an economic and political crisis like Venezuela. He said, “A good leader must be an implementation man. He should be knowledgeable because, after the vision, he will dissect and crystalize them. He should be a jack of all trades and master of all. He may not score distinction in all but should be able to score distinction in many. He must also be courageous to implement hard decisions. If you don’t implement courageously, some of the visions will die or will not be implemented for the good of all. “He must also be compassionate, knowing when to temper justice with mercy, to show the human part of him. He should exude milk of human kindness. “I know that our country is passing through a very rough time now because we have not planned well; it is not this administration. We know we were all dependent on oil. So, when oil prices came crashing and when security issues arose, disrupting production, we were caught napping. Because of that, we went into recession. Later on, COVID-19 forced us to go into a second recession. We are not yet out of the woods. “We thank God; I am part of this government. I know that if we don’t have the kind of leader that we have who is strong like President Muhammadu Buhari, the experience of Nigeria would have been like that of Venezuela.” Ngige added that if not for Buhari, the citizens of Nigeria would have spilled into Cameroon, Niger, and other places as refugees. “But he forced us all to go into agriculture. We made agriculture the first signature program of the administration and provided food security so that we can eat whatever we grow here,” he stated.

The video was shot around 6:48 a.m. local time at the crossing between Senkivka, Ukraine, and Veselovka, Belarus, CNN reports. Reacting to the development, US President, Joe Biden, condemned the military invasion by Russia, describing it as “an unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine”. Biden said, “President Putin has chosen a premeditated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering. Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way. The world will hold Russia accountable.” According to a senior Biden administration official, the US and its allies are planning on Thursday to trigger the “full scale” of the sanctions that have been discussed over the last several weeks in response to the attack. Also, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Jonson, told Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, in a phone call on Thursday that “the West would not stand by as President Putin waged his campaign against the Ukrainian people.” Johnson and Zelensky spoke over the phone after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in the early hours of Thursday, according to a statement tweeted by Downing Street. Johnson told Zelensky on the call that “he was appalled by the unfolding events in Ukraine,” said the statement. The situation is controlled; the Russian troops are suffering losses.” The Ministry also said there had been “no losses among the defenders of Ukraine.”
