BREAKING: MTN pays $253.86m balance to NCC for 5G licence

MTN Nigeria has paid the remaining $253.86 million to complete the $273.6 million fifth generation (5G) licence fee to the Federal Government before the February 24 deadline, an industry source said on Thursday. MTN and Mafab Communications were allocated slots for the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum dedicated to the deployment of the technology after emerging winners conducted by Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Abuja last year after 11 rounds of bidding that lasted eight hours. According to the Information Memorandum (IM) for the spectrum auction, the Commission had set $197.4million as reserve price for each slot of the spectrum. Bidders were required to pay 10 per cent of the bid price of $19.74million. But the bid surpassed NCC’s reserve price and went as high as $273.6million. Accordingly, the winners are expected to pay the Winning Bid price, less the Intention-to-Bid Deposit of $19.7million. Details Shortly…

STRIKE: Don’t play with the future of our children, ASUU begs FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN branch, on Thursday, accused the Federal Government of a deliberate attempt to kill the future of Nigerian students so as to perpetuate themselves and their children in leadership positions. ASUU also said that the way Federal Government shy away from the agreements it reached with the Union, indicates that it wants to enthrone a system where the poor would never have access to tertiary education in the country. In a press statement which emanated from a congress of the Union in UNN and signed by the chairman, Comrade Christian Opata, and the Secretary, Comrade Michael Nwokedi, ASUU wondered why it would take series of protests and the interventions of prominent Nigerians before the Federal Government could sign and honour part of the agreement it reached with the Union. Part of the statement also reads “That since the December 23, 2020 Memorandum of Action, MoA, was signed to suspend the nine months strike embarked by our union in 2020, FG is yet to implement the MoA fully. “That the FG appears to be more at home with killing indigenous knowledge and discouraging local content in its pursuit of development. If not, why have they failed to adopt the University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS, which the union developed as a viable alternative to IPPIS- a very corrupt payment platform. The FG subjected UTAS to series of integrity test, yet no such test was conducted on IPPIS. The results of the test on UTAS indicate that Nigerians can solve their problem. However, government is not comfortable with that because it was developed by Nigerians. What a shame! “The 2009 Agreement is still a subject of controversy. To renegotiate it has been a problem. This is when it was supposed to be reviewed every three years. Consequent on the associated delays in the renegotiation, many Nigerian academics left the country and are making waves outside, contributing to the economy of other nations rather than ours. “For a government that has consistently failed to prioritize education to establish universities indiscriminately is laughable and pitiable. Our universities are now glorified secondary schools. It may interest you to know that some state universities in Nigeria owe their staff close to four months arrears of salary. Why establish more when the ones in existence are not properly funded? ” Since 2009 till date, Nigerian lecturers’ salary has remained the same and the lowest throughout Africa. War torn Burundi pays better than Nigeria. Where then is the ‘greed’ of Nigerian lecturers as espoused by governments and its lackeys? ” We plead with Nigerians to plead with the FG not to push us into going back to the trenches. Our children have suffered enough. For us in UNN, we are ready and fully mobilized should government decide not to put its ears to the ground to hear the ballad of the ‘ants,” the Union said.

Adulterated fuel: Buhari orders service providers to compensate aggrieved consumers

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Thursday, directed service providers to fully disclose relevant information concerning the consumption of their products and compensate dissatisfied consumers as proper redress for their complaints. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Thursday titled, ‘Providers of substandard fuel must be held accountable, directs President Buhari’. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, had hinted that the government would look into possible compensation for Nigerians whose automobiles had been damaged by the contaminated fuel. According to Shehu’s statement on Thursday, the President “has ordered that producers and providers of consumable products be held accountable for substandard services and or products sold by them. “The President has also given directives to the relevant government agencies to take every step in line with the laws of the country to ensure the respect and protection of consumers against market abuses and social injustices.” Reacting to the petroleum product shortages linked to the inadvertent supply of products of foreign origin into the Nigerian market, Buhari said the protection of consumer interests is his regime’s priority, and it is, therefore, ready to take all necessary measures to protect consumers from hazardous products, loss or injuries from the consumption of substandard goods. The President directed that in line with the law, “service providers must make full disclosure of relevant information with respect to the consumption of their products and that dissatisfied consumers are entitled to a proper redress of their complaints.”

Lukman: Possibility of northerner emerging PDP presidential candidate is a threat to APC

Salihu Lukman, former director-general of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), says the possibility of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) producing a northern presidential candidate is a threat to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ahead of the 2023 elections, there has been a clamour from various quarters to zone the presidency to the south. In a statement issued on Thursday, Lukman said it is “almost conclusive” that there is no negotiation of zoning the PDP presidential ticket to the south. “The potential that PDP will produce a northern candidate presents a very strong challenge to the APC, which will affect the emergence of a ‘quality leader’ as the presidential candidate of APC,” he said. Lukman said a new organisation known as ‘The Association’ — made up of businessmen, political and civil society leaders, including 14 current governors — is key to opening the political spaces in the PDP and APC. “Therefore, the new political value potentially being created by a group such as the ‘association’ is the possibility of opening the political spaces in the country, including within the current big parties (APC and PDP) to produce higher quality leaders that what would have ordinarily been the case in 2023,” he said. “It will require some superior organising to produce such a higher quality desired different outcome, which is why such an initiative requires the support of all patriotic Nigerians. “The other dynamic is also the question of providing a level playing field for candidates from all parts of the country. “There are many leaders across the country and in both PDP and APC who could have qualified to emerge as candidates with all the ‘quality leadership’ credentials being envisioned with reference to any leadership qualification.” The APC chieftain added that politicians must be made to organise their campaigns based on honesty.

Despite court order DSS denies Kanu access to new clothes, brother alleges

Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has again, raised the alarm that despite court order, the Department of State Services, DSS, has not allowed Kanu access to his new clothes. Kanu’s brother told Vanguard that he had in three occasions, personally taken new clothes to the IPOB Leader currently detained at the DSS headquarters Abuja, but was not allowed by the secret police to hand over the clothes to him. “I was at the DSS headquarters today (Thursday) to give my brother his new clothes but the DSS did not allow me to give him the clothes. This is the third time they are stopping me from giving him his clothes in flagrant violation of court order”, Prince Emmanuel lamented. He also alleged that the DSS denied two guests of Kanu ( a lawyer and another citizen) who came to see him access to him. Kanu’s brother called on the international community to prevail on Nigeria to obey her own court orders and allow his brother unfettered access to his clothes and guests. Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja federal High Court, had during the last court appearance of Kanu, ordered that she would not want to see Kanu again dressed in the same clothe which he wore since his rendition to Nigeria in June 2021. His lawyers had bitterly complained that the IPOB Leader has not been allowed to change his clothes since he was detained at the DSS headquarters, nor has he been allowed access to his religious materials.

2023 Elections: Don’t Interfere With Nigerian Politics, Buhari Warns New Diplomats

President Muhammadu Buhari has advised diplomats in the country to stay within the limits of their schedules and not meddle in the internal politics of the nation as the 2023 elections approach. President Buhari said this at the presentation of Letters of Credence to ambassadors of the Czech Republic, Zdenek Krejci; Italy, Stephano De Leo; Spain, Juan Ignacio Sell Sanz, and Israel, Michael Shual Freeman in Abuja on Thursday. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement titled ‘Observe, but don’t interfere in internal politics, President Buhari tells diplomats ahead of 2023 elections.’ “You are assuming your diplomatic responsibilities in Nigeria at the very interesting political period as Nigeria’s national elections are due in early 2023,” he said. “As you settle down in the face of these developments, it is my hope that you will also be guided by diplomatic practice, to ensure that your activities remain within the limits of your profession as you monitor the build-up to and the conduct of the general elections next year.’’ President Buhari had in October 2021 issued the same caution to diplomats who he also called on to adequately monitor the build-up to and the conduct of the 2023 general elections as well as support the country in addressing rising global insecurity. He urged the ambassadors to build lasting friendships while performing their duties that will go beyond assignments in Nigeria. “We are living in unprecedented times and with so many uncertainties, especially with the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in global insecurity, and the devastation of our environments caused by climate change among other existential threats to our collective peace, progress, and shared values. “Different factors that accounted for these challenges go beyond the abilities of any single country to effectively contain alone. Matters of security have become the business of all the nations of the world to work closely together to build consensus in order to overcome these challenges,’’ he noted. “For us in Nigeria,’’ President Buhari told the diplomats, “we continue to make steady progress despite the daunting challenges, especially in the areas of insecurity, fight against corruption, diversification of the economy, and our efforts in promoting good governance, amongst other aspirations.’’ The president noted that Nigeria’s differences and divergence in culture and religion had contributed immensely in cementing unity, as a people, as well as spurring religious tolerance and respect for one another. On the regional level, the president said Nigeria will continue to work with other member-states of ECOWAS and regional blocs to deal with the problems of terrorism, trans-border crimes, banditry, maritime issues, and unconstitutional change of government. “We are engaging in frank self-retrospection in order to identify and isolate appropriate containment strategies that can help de-escalate the drift into the unconstitutional seizure of power in the sub-region,’’ Buhari added. President Buhari assured of partnership and mutual cooperation in canvassing more Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in the healthcare system, education, infrastructure, local manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, and transportation.

Atiku support groups ask him to drop 2023 bid — and back south-eastern candidate

A coalition of support groups of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has advised the former number two citizen not to run for the presidency in 2023 but support a south-eastern candidate. The coalition is made up of the Middle Belt Network for Atiku, North For North Support Group for Atiku, Turaki Arewa Vanguard for Atiku and South-West Development Frontiers. Abubakar has not officially declared his presidential bid but it is said that he is warming up to run for the highest office in the land — yet again. Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Femi Osabinu, convener of the South-West Development Frontiers, said age is not on the side of the former vice-president. Osabinu said the country needs a young and energetic person who would be able to handle the rigours of office. “We make a clear and undiluted call on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to give second thoughts to his desire to contest for the office of president in the elections again in 2023,” he said. “While Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has served the nation with distinction, as evidenced in the fact that we have been his supporters for years, it is also undeniable that at 77 years of age going into this race, it will be a mismatch of national priorities to support his quest, taking into consideration the unique interplay of circumstances currently confronting our country. “Nigeria needs a young and more energetic unifier, who will be able to handle the rigours of being physically present in crisis spots to make the physical and psychological statement of the government being in charge and committed to finding lasting solutions to our national challenges. “The time is now, if we must save Nigeria, for a younger candidate to take the saddle and take back our country from a particular set of Nigerians who are in their late seventies and eighties “Our members, in their numbers across the country, are on standby in the various political parties and consulting from outside of the parties to ensure that the south eastern presidency is achieved in 2023.” The convener said their call is based on the “mood of the nation”.

Reps Ask NNPC To Suspend Companies That Imported Adulterated Fuel

Members of the House of Representatives have called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to suspend the four companies which recently imported adulterated fuel into the country. The lawmakers also mandated its committee on petroleum downstream to investigate the release and sale of the off-spec Premium Motor Spirit by petrol stations across the country and to bring the culprits to book. The issue was raised on Thursday as a motion of urgent public importance by the Chief Whip of the House, Mohammed Monguno.   The NNPC GMD on Wednesday explained how ‘adulterated’ Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from Belgium and listed the companies – MRS, Emadeb/Hyde/AY Maikifi/Brittania-U Consortium, Oando, and Duke Oil as the culprits. He said NNPC investigation revealed the presence of Methanol in PMS cargoes of the companies. Members of the House of Representatives during the plenary on Thursday also expressed concern over the effect of that adulterated petrol on vehicles and how the cost of transportation, goods, and service has increased. Some of the lawmakers lamented that the system is completely compromised, considering the processes which the fuel must go through before reaching the fuel stations. They asked that Nigerians whose vehicles and equipment were directly affected by the adulterated fuel be compensated.   Adulterated Fuel and Long Queues There was anxiety in Lagos, Abuja, and some parts of the country on Tuesday when long fuel queues emerged due to the scarcity of the product. Some fuel stations were locked while a few which were opened had long queues of motorists waiting to buy fuel. The Federal Government in reaction said the scarcity and panic buying of fuel was due to excess methanol in some fuel. CEO of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Agency, Mr. Farouk Ahmed explained that methanol quantity above Nigeria’s specification was discovered in a supply chain, which was later isolated. The Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, therefore announced that there will be a major investigation to unravel the cause of the unsafe quantity of methanol in petrol imported into the country. Speaking concerning the crisis on Wednesday, NNPC GMD Mele Kyari explained that PMS was imported into the country by four importers from Antwerp in Belgium with quality inspectors failing to detect the high level of Methanol it contained, first at the point of import in Belgium and at the point of arrival in Nigeria.
