Muslim-Muslim ticket: Don’t let any pastor or Imam tell you who to vote, Keyamo tells Nigerians

Festus Keyamo, minister of state, labour and employment, says Nigerians should not allow clerics of any faith to influence their voting pattern in the 2023 presidential election. Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had, on Sunday, announced Kashim Shettima, former Borno governor, as his running mate for the 2023 elections. The announcement came shortly after Ibrahim Masari stepped down as the “placeholder” running mate of Tinubu. The Muslim-Muslim ticket had elicited criticism from some Nigerians who described it as an injustice to the Christian community.   Following the announcement, Keyamo had described Shetima as the “perfect” running mate for Tinubu. However, Babachir Lawal, former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), criticised the decision, saying it was a “disastrous error and grave injustice”. However, in a series of tweets on Wednesday, Keyamo asked Nigerians to shun religious sentiments and be focused on performance when voting in 2023. “No one should deceive us, as ordinary Nigerians, be it a pastor or Imam, to vote or not to vote for anyone based on the religious colouration of the ticket,” Keyamo tweeted. “Let the debate begin as to the PERFORMANCE of Bola Yinubu as Gov. of Lagos State and not the issue of same faith ticket.”

We don’t know Peter Obi and he doesn’t know us’, IPOB replies Gumi

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted to Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi’s statement that IPOB’s agitation had slowed down since Peter Obi became Labour Party’s presidential candidate, noting IPOB does not know Peter Obi and he does not know us. IPOB reiterated that its activities are basically to actualise a sovereign nation of Biafra away from Nigeria, adding that it has no business with Nigerian politics or Peter Obi. The separatist group said this in a statement by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, on Wednesday. Gumi, had posted on Facebook, Tuesday: “The IPOB rhetoric and loud voice of Biafra agitations have muffled out with the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labor Party presidential candidate. “To them, Igbo have a platform. It’s clear now that the entire IPOB outcry was a political gimmick to get power.” In its reaction, IPOB said: “The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been drawn to the statements from the Islamic cleric and fundamentalist Sheikh Gumi, alleging that IPOB’s agitation has slowed down in the South Eastern Region since Peter Obi picked up the tickets from Labour Party for presidential race in Nigeria. “This purported statement shows the level of cluelessness and how uninformed he is about IPOB movement and its activities. “Sheikh Gumi must understand that IPOB is not on the same page with him and his cohorts in the North. “We understand that some elements in Nigeria, especially Fulani, were thinking that Peter Obi, who is among those running the race to become Nigeria’s President, would affect us or change our decisions to pursue the freedom of our dear nation Biafra. “We are not capitulating in this fight to liberate Biafra from dungeon that British caged us with Fulani in this contraption packaged as a country Nigeria. “Let him be informed that IPOB has engaged in world class standard freedom fighting, which has successfully brought us thus far. “We have covered the rockiest part in this struggle and no doubt that freedom of Biafra is certain. “IPOB does not engage with any selection process they call ‘Nigeria election’ and we are not interested in their fraudulent ways of selecting the President of Nigeria. “We have said it before now that IPOB does not know Peter Obi and Peter Obi does not know IPOB.”

The political parties included the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Action Alliance (AA). Speaking at the ceremony organised by the National Peace Committee in Osogbo, Bishop Mattew Kukah, urged all political parties featuring in the election to work toward peace. Kukah said Nigeria was in need of a peaceful environment and hence the need to encourage political actors to think toward peace. He said that violence has been one of the fundamental threats to Nigeria’s democracy. According to him, civil society organisations, religious groups, traditional institutions and other key actors have a role to play in achieving peace in Nigeria. Kukah urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political actors and other stakeholders to ensure that the election was free, fair and peaceful. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that the success of the peace accord depended on all stakeholders. Yakubu said that INEC has taken steps to ensure a credible election on July 16 and appealed to all candidates to strive hard to abide by the peace accord. IGP Bans Use Of Spy Number Plates Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered a total ban on all use of Police SPY vehicle number plates by vehicle owners across the states of the federation without exceptions. Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced this in a statement on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. “This is irrespective of whether it is authorised, or not, as all authorizations are hereby revoked indefinitely,” he said. “This order is necessary to forestall the continuous disregard for traffic rules and regulations and other extant laws guiding road use by individuals hiding under the privileges of SPY police number plates.”   As a result, the IGP directed police officers and officers of other security agencies attached to VIPs who use the ‘SPY’ number plates to ensure prompt compliance with the directive or risk being arrested for violation of the order. He asked the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) to give full effect to the directives. Baba specifically directed the AIGs and CPs to ensure that all ‘SPY’ number plates currently in use were confiscated henceforth, but the owners of such vehicles should not be arrested unless they were police officers or officers of other security agencies on escort duties. He, however, warned that while carrying out the assignments, officers must ensure that the rights and privileges of citizens were respected in line with the laws of the land and in accordance with international best practices. “Other security agencies and members of the public are enjoined to cooperate with the police in this regard as the moves are aimed at strengthening our internal security,” Adejobi stated.

US inflation rate jumps to 9.1% — highest in almost 41 years

The annual inflation rate of the United States reached 9.1 percent in June, the highest rate in almost 41 years. The Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) disclosed this on Wednesday in its latest consumer price inflation (CPI) report. It said the pace of the consumer-price index increased in June compared to May’s annual rate of 8.6 percent. According to BLS, the food and energy index are the major components with the highest rate. “The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 1.3 percent in June on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 1.0 percent in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 9.1 percent before seasonal adjustment,” it said. “The increase was broad-based, with the indexes for gasoline, shelter, and food being the largest contributors. The energy index rose 7.5 percent over the month and contributed nearly half of the all items increase, with the gasoline index rising 11.2 percent and the other major component indexes also rising. The food index rose 1.0 percent in June, as did the food at home index. “The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.7 percent in June, after increasing 0.6 percent in the preceding two months. While almost all major component indexes increased over the month, the largest contributors were the indexes for shelter, used cars and trucks, medical care, motor vehicle insurance, and new vehicles. The indexes for motor vehicle repair, apparel, household furnishings and operations, and recreation also increased in June.” It further added that a similar increased rate was last recorded in November 1981. “Among the few major component indexes to decline in June were lodging away from home and airline fares. The all items index increased 9.1 percent for the 12 months ending June, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending November 1981. The all items less food and energy index rose 5.9 percent over the last 12 months. The energy index rose 41.6 percent over the last year, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending April 1980. The food index increased 10.4 percent for the 12-months ending June, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending February 1981,” it added. In May, the federal reserve raised the interest rate by 50 percent basic points to curb rising inflation, the highest hike since 2000. Since the Russia-Ukraine crisis started, global economies have been struggling to tame rising energy and food costs. The development is causing tension and frustration across the cities.

It’s time to vote human being with conscience, trust ― Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has told Nigerians that time has come to vote for “a human being who has conscience and trust” to lead the country. Obi who stated this Wednesday in a remark at the on-going National Convention of the Assemblies of God Nigeria at Okpoto, Ebonyi State, said people should not vote based on tribal sentiments but on competence and performance. The presidential hopeful urged Nigerians to look beyond tribe and vote for candidates based on what they can offer. His words: “Put all of us on a scale; let’s know who we are; let’s ask questions who we are; let’s verify who we are. ” Don’t say: Because Peter Obi is from the South East, I will vote for him. Do not vote for me because I’m an Igbo man. Don’t vote for anybody because he is from the West. Do not vote for anybody because he’s from the North. ” This is time to vote for a human being who has conscience and trust”.

A 28-year-old Kuje Correctional Centre escapee, Yakubu AbdulMumuni, has been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command. The suspect was arrested in Sango-Ota, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. Atiku, Tinubu’s choice of running mates has given victory to Peter Obi’

‘Hon Serguis OgunA group, Organisation for Global Youths Peace Empowerment and Development Initiative ,OGYPEDI, has said the choice of running mates by the presidential candidates of All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Messrs. Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, has paved the way for Peter Obi’s victory. In a statement by its National Coordinator, Mr. Japhet Omene, the group questioned why Atiku didn’t accept the recommendation of PDP committee set up to choose a running mate.   He said picking someone against the position of the party wasn’t a good thing to do. His words: “It is no surprise that a lot of Nigerians are already seeing Atiku as an unserious person and as someone who does not heed counsel. Tinubu on the other hand, committed the worst political blunder by choosing to disregard the sensitive nature of Nigeria’s religious diversity. He willfully committed the worst political blunder by his choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket. The decision is already dividing Nigeria across religious lines. We hope he is aware of the implications because Nigerians are now left with no other choice but to massively vote for Peter Obi who has been prudent in ensuring that Nigerians do not find faults in his candidacy.”

Muslim-Muslim ticket: APC isn’t the only party… there’re options, says Catholic priest

John Oluoma, priest of the Catholic archdiocese of Abuja, says Nigerians who are worried about the Muslim-Muslim ticket fielded by the All Progressives Congress (APC) are not ready to make an informed choice in the 2023 elections. Bola Tinubu, APC presidential candidate, on Sunday, announced Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno, as his running mate. The unveiling of Shettima who is a Muslim like Tinubu elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians, with Christian groups kicking against the decision. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the north had issued a statement criticising Tinubu’s decision, saying the ruling party “has no regard for our diversity” as a country. Also, some members of the APC have resigned from the party over the development. In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Oluoma said Nigerians should not be agitating over APC’s decision to field two Muslims for the 2023 presidential election because there are other candidates. “I honestly do understand why some persons feel scared about it, however, I refuse to validate or consolidate that fear for some reasons. APC is just one party, we have other parties in Nigeria. One of the beauties of democracy is the availability of options,” he wrote. “Crying over APC’s candidates in the midst of other candidates questions our readiness to change the status quo or our capacity to make and accept informed decisions.” The clergyman said the ruling party fielded two Muslims for the top offices in the country for the sake of “electoral victory”. “There’s only one major reason behind the Muslim-Muslim ticket by APC — electoral victory. Without a Muslim VP, the APC will lose significant votes from the North and probably lose the entire presidency. This is the fear and the reason for a Muslim VP,” he said. “Don’t let anyone beguile you to make it a religious problem, if you do, you will keep losing the big picture. I’ll never reduce this issue to a religious problem, it’s more of political dexterity. APC chose electoral votes over religious sentiments. “Of course, APC knows a number of Christians will be offended, but they still went ahead probably knowing that the mathematics of more votes favour them in this issue more than feelings. If you don’t like it, you are right. “If you don’t like it, you are right crying and bemoaning it? That’s where you and I separate. There’s Labour Party driving a political revolution with Peter Obi, invest in it, be part of it, preach it and convert others if Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and All progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu don’t appeal to you. “Whether this is a smart move by APC or not depends on voters. If it’s a bad strategy, it’s the APC that should bemoan it, not you an independent voter. Even card-carrying members of a party are not forced to vote for the candidates of their party. “In the midst of these, I wish to state the following implications: If Tinubu, a Muslim from the south cannot win an election with a Christian VP from the North, northern Muslims, southern Muslims and northern Christians don’t need me to spell it out for them”. The clergyman said Nigerians should not “relegate religious sentiments only when it’s convenient for your particular goal, let’s get thorough and rigorous about it for the good of our country. Actually, Nigeria and Nigerians stand to gain better when we throw away all these sentiments”.
