Post Date : February 2, 2020

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the candidate of the Action Democratic Party for last year’s Anambra State governorship poll, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Okonkwo.

Okonkwo was arrested by the anti-corruption agency after he instituted a N65bn law suit against the commission. It was learnt that the EFCC had earlier detained Okonkwo for two days and released him on administrative bail.

However, after 18 months of granting him bail, the EFCC failed to charge him for allegedly obtaining money under false pretences. Okonkwo sued the agency for unlawful detention, harassment and freezing of his accounts since May 2019 without any court order. The case came up on Thursday at the Federal High Court, Enugu, but the EFCC was reported not to have filed any defence in the suit. The EFCC, however, picked up Okonkwo immediately after the court adjourned the case till Monday for hearing.

Okonkwo is said to have earlier petitioned the acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, complaining about the action of the South-East Zonal office of the commission.
