ROAD TO JAIL: Citizens Demand Prosecution of Policemen Dismissed for Kidnapping

In a shocking case of misconduct, three policemen serving with the Abia State Police Command have been dismissed over allegations of kidnapping and extortion.

This is also as citizens and civil society groups demand immediate prosecution of the errant policemen without further delay.

The officers, alongside two civilian accomplices, were arrested for abducting unsuspecting victims along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway and demanding ransom for their release. The incident has sparked outrage among citizens, who are now calling for their immediate prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.

The dismissed officers, identified as Sergeant Jonas Nnamdi (Force No. 501356), Corporal James Daniel (Force No. 511844), and Corporal Ifeanyi Emeka (Force No. 511853), were found guilty after an orderly room trial conducted by the Abia State Police Command. They were reportedly armed with an electric baton, an assault rifle, and a Beretta pistol when they hired a minibus, abducted civilians, and threatened their families for money.

The arrest was made by officers from the Abayi Division in Aba, who acted swiftly following reports of the crime. The suspects have since been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for prosecution, alongside their civilian accomplices. Their official accoutrements have also been retrieved, and they have been stripped of their membership in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the dismissals in a statement issued on February 7, 2025. She emphasized that the state Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and unprofessional conduct. “Discipline and professionalism are the bedrock of the Nigeria Police Force,” she stated, assuring the public that the command is committed to upholding the vision of the Inspector General of Police for a competent, service-driven, and people-friendly police force.

The incident has reignited concerns about the conduct of some law enforcement officers and the need for stricter oversight. Citizens have expressed relief at the swift action taken by the police command but are demanding that the dismissed officers and their accomplices face the full wrath of the law. Many believe that their prosecution will send a strong message to other officers who might be tempted to engage in similar acts of criminality.

As the case moves to the courts, the public is watching closely to ensure that justice is served. The dismissal of the officers is seen as a step in the right direction, but citizens are urging the authorities to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future through stricter vetting, continuous training, and robust accountability mechanisms within the police force.
