Why Obasa was Impeached as Lagos Speaker — Lawmaker

Tobun Abiodun, lawmaker representing Epe constituency 1 in the Lagos assembly, says Mudashiru Obasa was impeached as speaker to save the state and parliament.

On Monday, members of the Lagos assembly impeached Obasa as the speaker over allegations bordering on gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Obasa was elected speaker in 2015 and was serving his third term as leader of the Lagos parliament.

The Lagos lawmakers elected Mojisola Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, as the new speaker of the assembly.

Meranda would serve as the first female speaker of the Lagos legislature.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the impeachment, Abiodun, who was flanked by other lawmakers, said the decision to impeach Obasa was a unanimous one.

Abiodun said members of the assembly had enough of Obasa’s leadership.

“It is just a change of baton. It is only death that is constant. Change is inevitable,” he said.

“The members of the parliament today have decided to change the leadership of the house.

“You know the constitution made it clear that the house has the power to regulate its proceedings.

“The members of the house felt they have had enough of the leadership of Rt. Honourable Mudashiru Obasa.

“Today, we have unanimously agreed that Mojisola Meranda will become the new speaker of the house.

“It was a resolution concorded to by all members of the parliament and so it be.

“We have resolved to work together and ensure that we move the parliament to the next level.

“We cannot open our eyes and allow the parliament to dwindle.

“We owe the constituents a duty of ensuring that the sanity of the house and integrity of the house is restored.

“We have unanimously agreed to carry out this action to save our image, and save the state.”
