Ibezim was not cleared for Imo North Senatorial primary – Screening Committee

While the controversies surrounding last Saturday’s All Progressive Congress senatorial primary for the vacant Imo North seat continues to swirl, the APC Screening Committee for the primary yesterday stunned party faithful with a fresh revelation. The Screening Committee categorically declared that one Mr. Frank Ibezim, who was purportedly declared winner by a faction of the party in the state was not cleared for the primary election. This was disclosed yesterday at a press conference by Dr. Lawrence Chukwu, Chairman, Imo North Senatorial Screening Committee The text of the press conference read in part: “Gentlemen of the press, we are the members of the Imo North Senatorial screening committee of the APC, appointed vide letters of appointment dated 25th August 2020 and duly inaugurated at the party headquarters on the 26th of August by the acting National Secretary, H.E Senator John James Akpan- Udoedehe. “Unfortunately, with utmost dismay, we noticed that our report which cleared five aspirants and disqualified six for very cogent and verifiable reasons were jettisoned. “Both the aspirants cleared and not cleared were allowed to run for the Senatorial primaries, embarrassingly, one of the aspirants not cleared is being touted as having emerged as one of the winners of the said controversial primary election.” The committee noted that eleven Senatorial Aspirants were screened and they include Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume, Hon. Matthew Omegara, Achonu Athanasius Nneji, Uchendu Mark Chijioke, Ibezim Chukwuma Frank, Edith Chidinma Uwajumuogu, Uchenna Onyeiwu-Uba, Eze Joachim Okoro, Bright Nwachukwu, Onuoha Chikwem Chijioke and Iheanacho Celestine Ihim. The committee stated that out of this number only five aspirants were cleared and they include Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume, Uchendu Mark Chijioke, Edith Chidinma Uwajumuogu, Eze Joachim Okoro and Bright Nwachukwu while the remaining six aspirants including Mr. Frank Ibezim were disqualified. The text of the press briefing read further: “Section 3(f) of the guidelines for the nomination of candidates stipulates that only aspirants fully cleared by the party shall be eligible to stand election at the party’s primaries. Section 3(k) also clearly stated that all aspirants must show knowledge of the party’s manifestos and programs and must commit themselves to the full implementation of the party’s goals and objectives. “Not losing sight of section 3(L) which states that all aspirants are to submit evidence of membership of the party for at least one year except a waiver is given. “Therefore, in compliance with section 11 of same guideline stipulating the roles and responsibilities of the screening committee, we have done our job sincerely, honestly and diligently without fear or favour but we have observed that Mr. Frank Ibezim who is purported to be one of the possible flag bearers of our party, was not cleared to contest the Imo North Senatorial primary elections on the following grounds. He did not submit any originals of his educational qualification certificates or properly certified true copies for citing. He presented a statutory declaration of age deposed to by one Emmanuel Ibezim, who happens to be his elder brother. The statutory age declaration was not signed by the declarant, which rendered the document invalid. He submitted another affidavit stating the loss of his academic qualification certificates which was not signed by the deponent, this also rendered the document invalid. The said unsigned affidavit did not have a police extract in support, to show that he reported to the law enforcement authority. Mr. Frank Ibezim submitted the photocopies of his academic certificates which he said were missing namely, WAEC certificate, University degree and NYSC certificate, purportedly certified as true copies of the originals and we made the following observations. a. One person signed a signature on all the photocopies of his certificates and dated them for a fee of N500.00, as though they were being certified as true copies. b. Nothing written on the academic certificates read ‘certified true copies. c. Nothing written on them showed who purportedly certified the certificates as true copies. d. Nothing written on them showed where they were certified in other to prove that the certifier had custody of the originals as required by law. e. For such certificates as WAEC CERTIFICATE, the custodian of the original should be the West African Examinations Council and they should be the ones to certify a photocopy as a true copy of the original f. For such certificates as UNIVERSITY DEGREE obtained from Imo state University, the custodian of the original should be the issuing university and they alone can certify a copy as true copy of the original. g. For such certificates as the NYSC CERTIFICATE, only the National Youth Service Commission can certify a photocopy of the certificate as the true copy of the original as the issuing authority. h. It is important to note that these institutions mentioned are the only ones to do the certifications as the certificates have been reported as missing. i. It is also noteworthy that Mr. Ibezim’s invalid affidavit of loss of certificates was dated in 2010 and he has had them for 10 years without signature and he never made any attempt to contact the issuing authorities to properly certify them assuming, though not conceding that they even existed, and thereby presenting fake documents to the screening committee.

Pastor Ibiyeomie not different from those seeking death of Kano singer for blasphemy

Fredrick Nwabufo We have to face up to the truth; the truth about Christian fundamentalism. The church today has been sculpted in the image of extremists and demagogues – men who arrogate to themselves the power of life and death. They pronounce perdition on those who step on their testy ego and deploy the bloodhounds of hell against those who differ with them. These men are the people Jesus the Christ dismissed as “brood of vipers”. They have taken the word of God and revised it to fit into their foibles and weaknesses. They make themselves god and instruct their followers by a mundane canon. They make God in their own image. It is either their way or the thoroughfare to hell. Really, we have a “Boko Haram problem” in the church. Love, grace, temperance, and compassion have taken leave of the synagogue. Some Christians, if given the latitude, will fight and kill for their pastors. They lost the logic of the gospel and have become mammonised by mammon-seeking pastors. They defend man but not God. First John 3:10 puts a picture to these children of nemesis. “By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practise righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother and sister,” the Bible says. Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries, by his unrighteous paroxysm of attacks on Ifedayo Olarinde, better known as Daddy Freeze, has taken the chief table among the Pharisees Jesus condemned. He let off a volley of abominable invective against Daddy Freeze because the broadcaster differed with Bishop David Oyedepo. Ibiyeomie said Daddy Freeze insulted his “father” – Oyedepo – so, he would “kill and tear” him. Obviously, this is Beelzebub speaking, not God. Ibiyeomie’s words: “Insult me; I won’t comment, but insult Oyedepo …that bastard…. any day I hear you talk about him… Do they know his (Freeze’s) father? Does Daddy Freeze have a father? Who’s his father?” “That half-caste who is born by a Somalian? The day I hear him insult Oyedepo, I’ll deal with him. Oyedepo may not talk, but I can’t be alive and you’d insult my father. I can’t take it. I’ll tear you to pieces, bastard. People who have fathers don’t insult fathers. He’s insulting him because he has no father. Does he (Freeze) look like a Nigerian? Somebody they gave birth to on the ship. “I curse the day he was born. Tell him. This should be the last time he’d talk about Oyedepo. A man who is not married; he has no wife. He can’t take care of his home but he’s coming to talk on TV. If he has one, let him show us his father. Somebody that is a broadcaster, does he have a good job? I will never be alive to see someone insult my father. You’re not born! I’ll kill, arrest him.” What could be more ghastly from an aperture that supposedly preaches the Bible and praises God, and from the altar of God? How is he different from those seeking the death of a singer in Kano for simply making music they put a slant on? Here is what Jesus the Christ has to say to Ibiyeomie in Matthew 23: ‘’They (Ibiyeomie and his ilk) pile heavy burdens on people’s shoulders and won’t lift a finger to help. Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels for everyone to see. They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the meeting places. And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers. ‘’But none of you should be called a teacher. You have only one teacher, and all of you are like brothers and sisters. Don’t call anyone on earth your father. All of you have the same Father in heaven. None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader. Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others. If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honoured.” Really, by this singular egregious act, Ibiyeomie has failed in his calling as a preacher of the gospel. But there is room for repentance in Christianity. As someone who once trained as a pastor myself, I suggest that Ibiyeomie publicly apologise to Daddy Freeze, put on sack-cloth and retreat into fasting and praying seeking the face of God. The Lord is merciful; He will blot out of his unrighteousness. Ibiyeomie is now ICHABOD. Fredrick Nwabufo is a writer and journalist Twitter @FredrickNwabufo

Buhari Speaks on new prices for Electricity, Petrol ,assures Nigerians of steady electricity

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in Abuja assured Nigerians of the willingness and determination of the Federal Government to provide stable electricity to every home and industry, while considering the economic challenges before individuals, families and businesses, explaining that “implementation of a Willing buyer, Willing Seller Policy for the power sector has opened opportunities for increased delivery of electricity.’’ Speaking at the First Year Ministerial Performance Review Retreat at the State House Conference Centre, the President said the target of providing 11,000 megawatts by 2023 was realistic and realizable, and would provide a lifeline for many businesses and improve the living conditions of many Nigerians. President Buhari noted that increase in price of electricity and deregulation of the petroleum sector were crucial decisions that were taken at the beginning of the year, preceding the COVID-19 pandemic, and continuous delay in implementation of the policy of the “Willing Buyer, Willing Seller’’ and deregulation of the petroleum would be detrimental to the economy, placing the burden of regular light cuts and fuel queues on Nigerians. “Implementation of a Willing Buyer, Willing Seller Policy for the power sector, has opened up opportunities for increased delivery of electricity to homes and industries. We are also executing some critical projects through the Transmission, Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme, which will result in the transmission and distribution of a total of 11,000 Megawatts by 2023. “On transportation, we are growing the stock and quality of our road, rail, air and water transport infrastructure. The Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund projects are also progressing very well. These include the 11.9 km Second Niger Bridge, 120 km Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and 375 km Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano Expressway. At the same time, we are actively extending and upgrading our railway networks, as well as our airports which are being raised to international standard with the provision of necessary equipment, to guarantee world class safety standard.’’ The President said the COVID-19 pandemic led to severe downturn in the funds available to finance the nation’s budget “One of the steps we took at the beginning of the crisis in March when oil prices collapsed at the height of the global lockdown, was the deregulation of the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) such that the benefit of lower prices at that time was passed to consumers. “This was welcome by all and sundry. The effect of deregulation though is that PMS prices will change with changes in global oil prices. This means quite regrettably that as oil prices recover we would see some increases in PMS prices. This is what has happened now. When global prices rose, it meant that the price of petrol locally would go up. “There are several negative consequences if Government should even attempt to go back to the business of fixing or subsidizing PMS prices. First of all, it would mean a return to the costly subsidy regime. Today we have 60% less revenues, we just cannot afford the cost. The second danger is the potential return of fuel queues – which has, thankfully, become a thing of the past under this administration. “Nigerians no longer have to endure long queues just to buy petrol, often at highly inflated prices. Also, as I hinted earlier, there is no provision for fuel subsidy in the revised 2020 budget, simply because we are not able to afford it, if reasonable provisions must be made for health, education and other social services. We now simply have no choice. “Nevertheless, I want to assure our compatriots that Government is extremely mindful of the pains that higher prices mean at this time, and we do not take the sacrifices that all Nigerians have to make for granted. We will continue to seek ways and means of cushioning pains especially for the most vulnerable in our midst. We will also remain alert to our responsibilities to ensure that marketers do not exploit citizens by raising pump price arbitrarily. “This is the role that government must now play through the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA). This explains why the PPPRA made the announcement a few days ago setting the range of price that must not be exceeded by marketers. The advantage we now have is that anyone can bring in petroleum products and compete with marketers, that way the price of petrol will be keep coming down.’’ On electricity, the President added that the recent service based tariff adjustment by the Discos had also been a source of concern for the government. “Let me say frankly that like many Nigerians I have been very unhappy about the quality of service given by the Discos, but there are many constraints including poor transmission capacity and distribution capacity. I have already signed off on the first phase of the Siemens project to address many of these issues. “Because of the problems with the privatization exercise, government has had to keep supporting the largely privatized electricity industry. So far to keep the industry going we have spent almost 1.7 trillion, especially by way of supplementing tariffs shortfalls. We do not have the resources at this point to continue in this way and it will be grossly irresponsible to borrow to subsidize a generation and distribution which are both privatized. “But we also have a duty to ensure that the large majority of those who cannot afford to pay cost reflective tariffs are protected from increases. NERC, the industry regulator, therefore approved that tariff adjustments had to be made but only on the basis of guaranteed improvement in service. Under this new arrangement only customers who are guaranteed a minimum of 12 hours of power and above can have their tariffs adjusted. Those who get less than 12 hours supply, or the Band D and E Customers MUST be maintained on lifeline tariffs, meaning that they will experience no increase. “Government has also taken notice of the complaints about arbitrary estimated billing. Accordingly, a mass metering program is being undertaken to provide meters for over

Fire destroys 8 vehicles, 10 shops at Bayelsa Mechanic Village

An early morning inferno on Sunday at the Bayelsa Mechanic Village destroyed eight parked vehicles and 10 shops, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. It was gathered that the fire incident started at about 3.00 am on Sunday but was put out by men of the fire service who responded to a distress call. Mr Denis Ekiyor who resides at Imiringi road, off Tombia roundabout told NAN on Monday that the timely intervention of firemen prevented the fire from escalating. “The fire incident was nipped early enough; the fire service battled to contain it and 10 shops were affected, some cars parked were also burnt and there are 10 of them. “There was nobody there when the fire started, so it did not affect any human life,” Ekiyor stated. Mr Mike Okoli, Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa told NAN in a telephone interview that investigation was underway. Okoli said he had visited the scene and assured the victims and traders that the Police would ensure security of their property while investigation continued. “The Deputy Governor of the state was also there earlier to show concern, empathy and support to the victims”, he said. Egypt discovers 2,500-year-old coffins in Giza

Egypt has announced the discovery of a collection of more than 13 intact sealed coffins, dating back to 2,500 years ago. The coffins were found at an archaeological site in Saqqara necropolis in Giza, said the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in a statement. The coffins, along with three sealed niches, were unearthed inside an 11-meter-deep shaft, according to the statement. Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Minister, Khaled al-Anany and Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), visited the site on Sunday and inspected the excavation work in the shaft. “The discovery marks the largest number of coffins found in one burial place since the discovery of the Asasif Cachette,’’ the minister said, referring to the discovery of 30 ancient coffins in October 2019 at Asasif cemetery in Upper Egypt’s Luxor Province. “The discovery in Saqqara includes a wonderful collection of coloured wooden coffins whose colours and inscriptions are still in a good condition despite the passage of 2,500 years,’’ Waziri, who leads the Egyptian archaeological mission in Saqqara, told Xinhua. Waziri said the exact number of the unearthed coffins as well as the identity and titles of their owners have not yet been determined. But, he added, they will be found out in the coming few days as the excavation work still continues. “The mission continues excavation work on the site and it is expected to result in many other new discoveries of shafts, coloured wooden coffins and statues,’’ the SCA chief added. Initial studies revealed that the coffins are completely sealed and have not been opened since they were buried inside the shaft, according to the ministry. (Xinhua/NAN)

How far can our budding secessionists go?

By Iliyasu Gadu If you spend a good amount of time on the internet following events and trends in Nigeria as I do, you are likely to come across expressions such as; “Nigeria is a doomed country, it cannot work”, ‘’ This Lugardian contraption of people fused together against their will by the British should be divided and let everybody go their separate ways”. To be sure, the division or separation from Nigeria has been canvassed variously by all the regions at one time in one way or another. The first recorded clamour in this regard was by the elites of the colony of Lagos when the British decided to merge Lagos which was then under a separate colonial administration with the rest of Nigeria. The grouse of the Lagosians was not just the merger with the Yoruba hinterland, but worse in their reckoning was joining up with the Northern protectorate with its ‘’Primitive feudal system and the unspeakable barbarities associated with it’’, as they put it then. The next significant call for secession from Nigeria came from the northern region in 1953 following the passing of the McPherson constitution whose provisions the elites of the north kicked against. The result was the calls for ‘’Araba’’ in Hausa or separation in English. There were riots all over the north then and the colonial administration sensing the dangers moved to amend in some cases and in others, expunge some of the contentious provisions. Fast forward to July 1966 following the counter coup by mainly officers of northern origin in revenge against the earlier one in January of the same year where northern political leaders and military figures were killed. In the ensuing uncertainty there were moves by some northerners to separate the north from the rest of Nigeria which was quickly discouraged and squelched. And of course this precipitated the chain reactions that led to the civil war which raged between 1967 and 1970 in which the aggrieved part of the country, Eastern Nigeria sought to secede. Then came the Gideon Orkar coup of April 22, 1990 in which the coup plotters sought to excise the north from the country. Although the mutiny was eventually put down, it however raised a lot of issues regarding the state of relations among the component parts of the country which have been reverberating right up to this day. In our current situation, despite the return to civilian democratic rule and the devolution of powers to constituent states and local constituencies, all intended to allow for representation, the calls for secession have grown steadily and have become more strident. Who are the groups calling for secession in the present circumstances and how far can they go in their bid to actualise it? The most strident calls for secession from the country come from the former Eastern part of the country. The grouses range from perceived marginalisation in representation to appointments in the Nigerian superstructure. Added to that is the perception rightly or wrongly that the continued stay of the eastern region as an entity within the country inhibits the people and area from actualising their potentials for accelerated development. Two main groups, Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, (MASSOB) and its splinter group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are spearheading the efforts for the actualization of the secessionist agenda of the south east. In the South west where feelings of separatism runs high, the groups championing the cause however are not as coordinated and focussed as in the southeast. Between Professor BanjiAkintoye’s Yoruba world Congress, (YWC) and the Afenifere, there has been a lot of talk and threats about separation from Nigeria but no real organization to that effect on ground. One basic observation about the separatist calls is that they all somehow expect that the government of the day will bow to their pressure and grant them their wish either through a conference or outright fiat. They are not like the classical separatist movements that take up arms and organize an insurrection from a territory. Ours mostly organize from the pages of newspapers and the internet using provocative threats and statements. But sensing that no government of any hue in Nigeria can and will grant the separatists their wish, they are looking up to foreign governments and multilateral bodies to aid them either in putting pressure on the government, or in supporting them logistically, diplomatically etc. But here again they have goofed. Nigeria can only be dismembered through the major support of one or several foreign powers acting in concert. And in that they will be acting in their own defined interest and not necessarily those of the secessionists. Indeed the secessionists may just end up being disposable pawns in their hands. But then the process would have set up a dangerous scenario in which Nigeria as a whole becomes one great bleeding field. Syria, Iraq, Libya, Congo DRC and Somalia come to mind. This is not to say however that the grouses of our budding secessionists should not be countenanced or that we should accept the dire situation in the country as given.Certainly our current political economy with the attendant disparities in the social, political and economic facets of our lives is not sustainable and can only result in a rupture in the not too distant future. It is a challenge for new thinking and approach away from the zero sum game that constitutes our politics. As we have seen from the tragic experiences of the countries mentioned above, the international system is unforgiving and grants no favours to countries that do not live up to expectation. While Nigeria does have some built in advantages that to some extent insulates it from some of the issues that brought these countries to their knees, what this means is that the world can only reckon with us if we show ability and commitment to lift ourselves out of our desperate circumstances by our own bootstraps.
