Detained Ekweremadu, wife risk 10-year jail in UK

The desperation to save the life of their daughter yesterday landed former Senate Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka, in London detention. They now face charges bordering on organ harvesting, which attracts a 10-year jail term. The alleged offence involves removing parts of the body against the will of the victim. Their daughter, Sonia, requires a kidney transplant but an attempt to get a donor went awry. The couple was arrested at the Heathrow Airport in London on Tuesday in the presence of protocol officials from the Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom (UK). From the airport, the detectives of the Specialist Crime Team of the Metropolitan Police took them away for interrogation. They were taken to the Uxbridge Magistrate’s Court near the airport yesterday. The judge denied them bail and fixed July 7 for a ruling on jurisdiction. A diplomatic source said the offences against the couple attract a 10-year jail term if found guilty. “The maximum penalty in the UK for these proven offences is imprisonment for 10 years. “Their assets in the UK can also be confiscated.” A delegation from the High Commission led by its Head of Consular and Welfare Section was at the court yesterday to watch the brief. The former Deputy Senate President and his wife have been availed of consular services. A top source, who confided in The Nation, said: “The couple wanted the best for their daughter. They were not out to harvest organs. They have gone through much trouble over the trauma of their daughter who needed a matching donor for a kidney transplant. “They got one and flew him to London only to discover that the kidney did not match her own. I think they decided to send him home and security issues arose. “In the course of an investigation, the Met Police spotted some procedural errors, which violated slavery legislation and child law in the UK. A 15-year-old boy was rated as underage in the UK. “For a while, the Met Police had watch-listed the couple until Ekweremadu was arrested on Tuesday. “Although Ekweremadu was received by Nigeria High Commission protocol officers, he was whisked away by the detectives from Met Police in their presence.” The source clarified that Ekweremadu officially supported the visa application for the supposed kidney donor. The source added: “The affected kidney donor was not smuggled to London and there was nothing discreet about his trip. “But at a point, he did not want to return to Nigeria and it became a security concern.” Ekweremadu on December 28, 2021, approached the Visa Section, British High Commission, Abuja to seek support for a UK visa for Ukpo Mwamini David. The letter reads in part: “I am writing in support of the visa application made by Mr. Ukpo Nwamini David, who is currently having medical investigations for a kidney donation to Ms Sonia Ekweremadu. “David and Sonia will be at the Royal Free Hospital London, and I will be providing the necessary funding. “I have enclosed a statement of my bank account. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require additional information.” A diplomatic source in Nigeria said: “From our records, Ekweremadu was arrested on Tuesday, but the news became public knowledge yesterday. “Our High Commission in London accorded him the usual protocol courtesies when he arrived in London and he was arrested in the presence of our officers. “Our interest is to ensure that the couple gets a fair hearing in line with the enabling UK laws.” Another source, who gave a different insight into why the couple was arrested said: “Met Police suspected that the child donor was picked up somewhere in Lagos for alleged rehabilitation in London by the Ekweremadus. But it turned out that they wanted him to donate his kidney without his consent. “In the hospital records, the boy’s age was allegedly put at 21 but during the pre-transplant examination, he claimed that he was 15 years. “The hospital immediately halted the procedure and sent out intelligence for security agencies to monitor the Ekweremadus. “The supposed donor also raised the alarm to the police when the Ekweremadus sought to return him to Nigeria contrary to what they promised him.” He added: “The age factor was a major challenge for the Ekweremadus for allegedly bringing a teenager and tagging him a 21-year-old. There was no evidence of parental consent. “The other dimension to the case was about the alleged £20,000 found in possession of the Ekweremadus who were not aware that the investigation was at an advanced stage as of May. They may face different charges for the cash on them.”

Senate Minority Leader, Others Visit Wike

Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda visits Governor Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt on June 23, 2022. Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda on Thursday led the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Senate to meet with Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt. Senator Aduda who has been a long-time ally of Governor Wike was nominated as Minority Leader two days ago to replace the former, Enyinaya Abaribe who defected from the PDP. On the entourage are, Deputy Minority Leader, Shuaibu Lau, Minority Whip, Chukwuka Utazi, and Deputy Minority Whip, Danjuma La’ah. Senator Barry Mpigi from Rivers State was on hand to receive the guests alongside Governor Wike. The meeting was held behind closed doors in the private residence of Governor Wike in Port Harcourt. The senators who arrived at about 3:10 pm, departed at about 6 pm, without stating the purpose of their visit. The visit of the Senators happened a few minutes after the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe equally visited Governor Nyesom Wike at his residence. Governor Wike had in the past days received top political figures at his private residence in Port Harcourt. Some of whom have visited the Rivers State Governor include the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, Governors Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. Like the other visits, that of Elder Orubebe was also private. Elder Godsday Orubebe who served in the Goodluck Jonathan administration, resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party this week. In his resignation letter addressed to the National Chairman of the Party, the former Minister said the present situation in the party does not inspire confidence that the party is ready to regain power in 2023 because the party disregarded its constitutional provisions and threw the zoning of the Presidency open, which created a situation that led to the emergence of a Northerner as the party’s presidential candidate, thus making the two topmost positions in the party, after the emergence of another northerner as the National Chairman.

BREAKING: Supreme Court strikes out Buhari, Malami’s suit on Electoral Act

The Supreme Court has struck out the suit by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami seeking to void the provision of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022. In a judgment on Friday, a seven-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, was unanimous in holding that Buhari, having participated in the making of the law by assenting to it, could not turn around to fault its provisions. The court, which upheld the objections raised by the National Assembly and other defendants against the suit, declined to determine it on the merit but declared that the Supreme Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear it and that the suit was an abuse of court process. Justice Emmanuel Agim, in the lead judgment, held that it was an attack on the democratic principle of Separation of Powers for the President to seek to direct/request the Legislature to make a particular law or alter any law. “The President lacks the power to direct the National Assembly to amend or enact an act..it violates the principle of separation of powers. “There is no part of the Constitution that makes the exercise of legislative powers subject to the directive of the President,” the court said.   Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma, yesterday told the newly installed Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace Lucius Ugorji, that much would be expected of him, especially now that the country was passing through the highest level of insecurity and youth restiveness. Uzodimma stated this at Maria Assumpta Cathedral, in Owerri, during the installation of Archbishop Ugorji, to replace the outgoing Archibishop Anthony Obinna, who has proceeded on retirement. According to him, the new Archbishop, will be expected to provide the much-needed direction for both the clergy and laity in the Archdiocese. While noting that the larger society would look forward to him providing unwavering voice for the voiceless, the governor said: “Today’s installation ceremony is a solemn one as it signifies the glorious transition of authority from His Grace, The Most Reverend Anthony John Valentine Obinna, who has been the Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province since March 1994) to His Grace, The Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji (who was appointed his successor in March 2022). “Our new Archbishop, His Grace Ugorji, please permit me to humbly remind you of the obvious – much is expected from you. As you know, the Divine Office of the Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province is the spiritual headquarters of Catholics in Imo and Abia states. “I am gladdened, however, by the fact that your pedigree – your education and vast pastoral experience – make you eminently qualified for the task ahead. Judging from the remarkable achievements you recorded in your previous position as the Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, does not doubt that you are the nodes man for this challenging job at these challenging times.”

UK’s attorney general to decide if Ekweremadus’ trial will go ahead

The attorney general of the England and Wales will decide within 14 days if Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy senate president, and his wife, Beatrice, will face trial in the UK over allegations of human trafficking. The couple were charged to the Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Thursday and remanded in custody until July 7 pending further investigation. Damla Ayas, the crown prosecutor, told on the court that “part of the allegations” against the couple took place in Nigeria. He said the case was “unique” and would require a decision by Sue-Ellen Braverman (pictured), the attorney general, on where the trial will be held. On Thursday, the London metropolitan police announced that the Ekweremadus were charged to court over the allegation of bringing a child to the UK for organ harvesting. The London metropolitan police said they were charged following an investigation by the police’ specialist crime team. The police added that the investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.   WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR Ekweremadu had in December 2021 written a letter to the British high commission in Nigeria backing the visa application of a potential kidney donor to his daughter. He said the donor and his daughter “will be at the Royal Free Hospital London”, adding that he would “be providing the necessary funding”. Although the donor is said to be 21 on his international passport, the Met police said he claims to be 15 and is thus regarded as a minor. The prosecution told the court that an appointment was made for the “teenager” at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead but the consultant refused to proceed because he had concerns “about the 15-year-old boy”. He returned to the address of the Ekweremadus in London before reporting to a police station. Because he is now considered a minor, TheCable is withholding his name.

IPOB: Why Nnamdi Kanu is yet to be granted bail — Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, has told the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson that there have been apprehension in admitting on bail detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because he jumped jumped bail the previous time he was granted bail. President Buhari stated this on Thursday, when he held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of Great Britain on the margins of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda. The President at the meeting reiterated his resolve to respect the maximum term limit in the Nigerian Constitution. The PM, obviously not quite familiar with the maximum two terms limit, had asked if President Buhari would run for office again. To which the latter responded: “Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well.” (General laughter). On the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, not being allowed to see his lawyers privately, the President dispelled such insinuation, saying the detained separatist was being given every opportunity under the law “to justify all the uncomplimentary things he had been saying against Nigeria in Britain.” Said President Buhari: “He felt very safe in Britain, and said awful things against Nigeria. We eventually got him when he stepped out of the United Kingdom, and we sent him to court. Let him defend all that he has said there. His lawyers have access to him. Remember he jumped bail before, how are we sure he won’t do it again, if he’s admitted to bail?” On the keenness expressed by the PM to help Nigeria in the area of security, the President said helping to stabilize Libya could be an initial good step, as the fall of Muammar Gadaffi after 42 years in power unleashed his armed guards on countries in the Sahel, “and they are causing havoc everywhere, as the only thing they know how to do is to shoot guns.” On Boko Haram insurgency, President Buhari said there was serious effort to educate the people on the fact that only an unserious person could kill innocent people, “and say Allah Akbar (God is Great). God is justice. “You can’t take innocent souls, and ascribe it to God. And the education process is working, the people now understand Boko Haram as anti-God, and not about religion.” PM Johnson said he was delighted about the good news on trade between the two countries, adding that the UK was further reducing tariffs on some goods going to Nigeria. He described the relationship between the countries as “very strong attachment,” adding: “I just want to be sure that we are doing enough. It’s a massive partnership for us, and we need to capitalize on it.” The Prime Minister offered condolences on some recent attacks in Nigeria, particularly on churches.

Insecurity: Gumi Cautions Against Indiscriminate Arrest Of Fulani Youths

Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has cautioned security agencies against indiscriminate arrest of Fulani youth under the guise of fighting banditry. Speaking at the venue of the launch of a Nomadic Right Concern group in Kaduna, the Sheikh said so far, there are many innocent Fulani youths and children in custody. He said the group aims to ensure that the innocent Fulani youth arrested for committing no crime get justice, adding that, that will help bring peace to the country. “Just a few days ago, a man called to tell me that security agencies arrested his seven innocent children on 17 May 2022 and since then, there was no news on their whereabouts. There are also many testimonies of the disappearance of Fulani youths and children without a trace. “There are those kept in secure custody and prisons for years without trial. If somebody is arrested for a crime, the laws say he should be taken to court within 24 hours but these youths are kept for years without trial, some have died in custody. This cannot be happening in a country like this. “The Nomadic Right Concern group was introduced to seek justice for the innocent children arrested. Those that are found guilty should be punished by the law but the innocent ones should be released in the interest of justice and equity. such indiscriminate arrest of youth and children must stop,” he said. He explained that the group has among its mandates, finding out the number of Fulani innocent children still incarcerated and getting lawyers to take up their cases. Speaking on the formation of the human rights group, the Chairman, Professor Umar Labdo, said the Nomadic Rights Concern is not for Fulani alone, but for all nomads and pastoralists, irrespective of their ethnicity, region, or religion. He said the organization will provide a voice for the voiceless herders whereby they will be able to address the nation and explain their needs, their hopes, and aspirations.

The twenty-nine abducted Zamfara wedding guests have regained their freedom, a source told Channels Television on Thursday. The Secretary of an association to which the victims belonged in Zamfara State, Ashiru Zurmi said that the victims are currently on their way to Gusau, the state capital. “Our members have regained their freedom today, I can confirm to you. ‘Be careful’ — Adamu warns Machina over Yobe north senatorial ticket

Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has warned Bashir Machina, a party member from Yobe north, over his comments on the party’s senatorial ticket for the district. The APC Yobe north senatorial ticket sparked controversy after Machina, who won the primary, insisted that he would not step down for Senate President Ahmad Lawan. Lawan had, in May, contested for the APC presidential ticket, but lost. Amid the controversy over the ticket, the senate president, who currently represents Yobe north district, was eventually listed as the APC senatorial candidate for the 2023 general election. Speaking in an interview published by BBC Hausa on Thursday, the APC chairman said the issues affecting the party on primaries are not unusual, adding that they will be resolved. “There is no leader who doesn’t receive complaints from the people he is leading and no leader would leave his position because of what the people say,” Adamu said. “In my position as the leader, whatever has happened in the APC since the day I became chairman of the party, I, Abdullahi Adamu, should be blamed.   “If you don’t take the blame as a leader, then who should be blamed? As a leader, you are trying to resolve problems, not increase them. “If you don’t know how to set a trap for a thief, the thief will set the trap for you. Machina should be careful; his issue is getting out of hand. As far I am concerned as chairman, my party did not violate any law. “Is there any law that says you cannot contest for a position after contesting for another one. No law prohibits anyone from doing so.” Speaking on the recent defection of members, Adamu said people can’t be forced to stay in the APC. “If I say there haven’t been people who have left our party, then I have lied,” he said. “No doubt, there are some who after they lost the primaries decided to leave the party and join another one. “Politics is not by force. This is not how we wanted it to be and it is not only our party that its members are leaving.”
