Since Tinubu became Nigeria’s president in June 2023, at least 2,423 Nigerians have been killed and no less than 1872 people abducted in various attacks across the country. This information was disclosed by Global Rights, an international civil society organisation.
Nigeria has been battling insecurity for more than a decade. Boko Haram, ISWAP and other terrorist organisations have relentlessly wrecked havoc on communities across states in northern Nigeria. Bandits are also beginning to walk in their footsteps, killing and kidnapping innocent Nigerians.
The war against insecurity has been on for years, with no end in sight for Nigeria yet. While campaigning for the presidency in 2023, Tinubu vowed to solve insecurity. However, after over 240 days in office, insecurity is still rife.
The country’s capital city is slowly becoming a shadow of its past. Since November last year, Abuja has been recording killings and abductions by armed criminals. Some families of abducted victims have resorted to crowdfunding for ransom to get their loved ones out of the dens of kidnappers.
In addition to this, Plateau State is experiencing one of the worst attacks in the history of the state.
“Road ambushes have made interstate travel more perilous. Reported incidents such as the abduction of 30 passengers near Katari along the Kaduna-Abuja highway and the kidnapping of 45 passengers in Orokam on the Benue-Enugu route underscore the gravity of the situation,” the report by Global Rights read.
While the Tinubu administration still makes promises to combat insecurity and put an end to these incessant attacks that have claimed the lives of many, Nigerians have yet to see any positive change.
