Mob sets ablaze two revenue collectors for ‘causing accident’ in Anambra

Two revenue collectors working for the Anambra state government have been burnt to death by a mob for allegedly causing the death of a bystander.

The incident happened on Friday at the old market road along Venn road in Onitsha, Anambra state.

It was gathered that some revenue collectors were allegedly dragging the steering wheel of a moving tipper with the driver in a bid to collect some money.

In the process, the tipper driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a bystander, who died instantly.

Angered by the incident, those who witnessed the accident attacked the revenue agents.

Some of the agents escaped while two of them were set ablaze by the mob.

Videos and pictures showing the burnt bodies of the revenue agents have appeared on social media.

Reacting to the incident, Tochukwu Ikenga, Anambra police spokesperson, said the command is working with the relevant authorities to prevent future occurrence of such an incident.

“Anambra police responded swiftly on the receipt of the fatal accident that happened in that area,” Ikenga said

“We are already working with the relevant authorities to ascertain what happened and find an amicable solution to such, especially on future occurrences.”

In November 2023, two suspected robbers were burnt to death by an angry mob at the Onitsha main market in the state.
