36 states submit report backing state police creation

Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, says 36 state governments have submitted their reports on the creation of state police to the national economic council (NEC).

Sani spoke in Abuja on Thursday after the NEC meeting presided over by Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

Sani stated that many states support the plan to establish state police, noting that virtually every state has security challenges.

The Kaduna governor added that the police, the army, and other relevant security agencies do not have enough personnel to cover all the states.

“That is the reason why most of us agreed that the establishment of state police in Nigeria is the way forward to address the problem of insecurity in the country,” he said.

“So, today one of the topics of discussion at the NEC meeting is the update on the creation of the state police.

“And I can say here that from what is available, virtually most of the states are in agreement with the establishment of state police in Nigeria.”

Sani said the council decided to step down the discussion on the state police until the next NEC meeting in January 2025.

“The council decided to step down the discussion until the next council meeting, because we need to come up with a report from the secretariat,” he said.

“There will be further stakeholder engagement after the panel and deliberation by the members of the NEC.” ⁣

During the NEC meeting on September 4, Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the FCT were issued an ultimatum to submit their reports on the creation of state police on September 9.
