Deji Adeyanju, the human rights lawyer, has accused the Nigerian police of refusing to release Speed Darlington, the rapper, despite an order from a federal high court order.
The rapper was arrested on November 27 while performing at a show in Owerri, Imo state. He was accused of cyberstalking Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning artiste.
His lawyers Adeyanju and Stan Alieke have described his continued detention as “unjustifiable”.
On December 23, Alieke announced on Instagram that the court had granted Darlington bail.
Adeyanju also posted on X that the court ordered Darlington’s arraignment within 48 hours or his release on bail.
However, Alieke later revealed that Darlington was never arraigned.
In an X post on Thursday, Adeyanju accused the Nigerian police of defying the court’s directive, describing it as a blatant “disrespect to the judiciary”.
“The Nigerian Police have refused to release Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court to do so. This is the highest form of disrespect to the judiciary,” he wrote.
Darlington was first arrested in October. This was after he taunted Burna Boy over his affiliation with the embattled US rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ who is facing multiple charges for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
He asked Burna Boy to explain how he won the Grammy award for his album ‘Twice As Tall’ — a project executive produced by Diddy. He claimed there was a sexual relationship between the duo.
After spending five days in detention, Darlington was granted bail on October 9.
