Video showing men in Nigerian Army uniform caught over killing, not recent

Claim

An X user, @biafra_daily shared a video showing men in Nigerian Army uniform caught for killing “a person ”and claimed it was a recent incident.

Verdict

This claim is MISLEADING. FACTWATCH Nigeria traced this video to the TikTok account that shared it online first and discovered that the video was first published on 17 November 2024.

In early 2025, it seems like social media users are targeting Nigerian security operatives by sharing either AI-generated photos or videos and old videos and images showing these security operatives where they are committing crimes or violating human rights.

In the last FactCheck by FACTWATCH Nigeria, an Associate Professor who should know better, recirculated a 2019 video of a fake police officer in Akwa-Ibom State claiming that it was a DCP in Kaduna State who was arrested for supplying weapons to bandits.

On January 4th, an X user, @biafra_daily, published a video showing men in Nigerian Army uniform who were caught killing “someone.”

The X user posted the video and wrote, “Breaking News:Nigeria Soldiers caught red-handed kidnapping 

The post generated over 1.5k likes as many people condemned what happened.

In the video, the recorder who said the incident happened in Ibefun, claimed that the “unknown soldiers were directed by an APC leader to kill someone in that area.

The men in the Nigerian Army uniform stood and watched as the recorder videoed their faces.

Verification

This FactChecker copied the TikTok username, @mostambitioius, which is watermarked on the video, then searched on TikTok and discovered that the video was first posted by a TikToker, @mostambitious on 17 November 2024. 

As mentioned several in the video, Ibefun is the town that bounds Lagos and Ogun Stateonat the western side along the Ikorodu/Ijebu-Ode new road.

An Instagram account also the video on 24 November 2024.

No recent press statement by the Ogun State government or the Nigerian military concerning the video was found anywhere by this Fact Checker, after thorough searches.

Also, no credible news report anywhere confirmed that this video was recent.

Conclusion

The X user shared an old video as recent. Therefore, it’s MISLEADING.
