Police Detain Journalist

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annexe, Alagbon in Lagos State, has detained FIJ reporter Emmanuel Uti, FIJ reports.

They are accusing him of criminal conspiracy and cyberbullying over FIJ’s November 28, 2024 report titled ‘Lagos Man Paid Expedia Consult’s Beverly Basil N4m for Canada Admission in 2023. She Disappeared With the Money‘.

On Tuesday morning, Uti, in the company of one of FIJ’s lawyers, honoured the police’s invitation to meet with one SP Magaji Ibrahim for what they described as a “fact-finding” activity.

However, more than six hours after he arrived at the station, and after spending hours responding to the police’s questions, the police are holding him incommunicado, deny him access to calls and preparing to lock him up.

Through the lawyer detailed to honour the police invitation, FIJ found out that Uti will detained overnight as things stand, unless something changes.

FIJ also called Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Police Public Relations Officer (FPRO). He promised to look into the matter.
