Reprieve for dehumanized minor, as Journalist attracts scholarship, accommodation for her

Activist journalist, Chidiebube Okeoma, has attracted a secondary school scholarship and accommodation for 12 – year old Amarachi Emmanuel and her elder sibling, Comfort Emmanuel.

Okeoma had in October rescued the minors from their step-mother who allegedly brutalized them for cooking and eating a meal of rice without her permission.

Their step mother who was arrested and remanded in Owerri Correctional Centre is currently being prosecuted in the Owerri Magistrate Court by the Commissioner of Police in the state.

Last Saturday, Okeoma who is the Founder and President of Stand For Humanity Foundation (SFHF), a Non Governmental Organization announced that the two girls had been awarded scholarships by Tendersouls Humanitarian Foundation.

Okeoma, disclosed that Amarachi and Comfort were on Friday enrolled at Amazing Grace international Secondary school located in the Orji axis of Owerri in the state capital.

The journalist disclosed that his team went with Dr Grace Chukwukere, the founder of Tendersouls Humanitarian Foundation to the school on Friday to enroll the children.

Okeoma noted that apart from paying 100 percent of the fees, the foundation bought back-to-school materials, sanitary and toiletries items for the kids.

According to him, Tendersouls Humanitarian Foundation had undertaken the responsibility of seeing the children through secondary school education.

The journalist also informed that he had also secured an apartment in Owerri for the kids, their father and kid brother, courtesy of the Goodwill of House of Representatives member, Hon. Chike Okafor, who gave him money to secure the apartment for the kids.

He added that through the help of some compassionate Nigerians, he had been able to furnish the apartment for the children.

His words: “we have been able to secure secondary school education scholarships for Amarachi and Comfort. This is courtesy of Tendersouls Humanitarian Foundation led by Dr Grace Chukwukere.

“They paid 100 percent of the fees, bought back to school materials and toiletries for the kids. They will undertake the responsibility till they are through with secondary school education. May God bless them.

“Through the help of a member of the House of representatives, Chike Okafor, my foundation, Stand for Humanity Foundation, secured an apartment for them. Some compassionate Nigerians assisted us and we were able to furnish the apartment.

“The idea is to assist the children to become useful in life. We are telling them that humanity is kind and not wicked. We will follow-up on the children’s growth to ensure that they have what they need to excel in life.”

It will be recalled that Amarachi Emmanuel’s mother died in 2018, and her father married a secondary school teacher, Mrs Blessing Emmanuel, in 2019. They live in the Nekede area of Owerri. The girl and her two siblings have been out of school for years.

“The woman compels them to hawk sachet water everyday and make returns to her while their mates are in school.

The girl alleges that her step mum dehumanizes them. They sell sachet water for her from morning till night, and most nights, she goes to bed hungry.

Her lips, eyes, vagina, left leg, right hand, and stomach are marked with burns and matchet cuts allegedly inflicted on her by her step mum.
