During his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate on January 30, 2025, Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee for FBI director, disclosed details of a high-stakes operation in which U.S. SEAL Team Six rescued an American hostage from Nigerian bandits in just 60 seconds. The operation, which took place in northern Nigeria, successfully freed Philip Walton, a 27-year-old son of American missionaries who had been kidnapped by armed bandits from neighboring Niger.
Patel, who played a key role in orchestrating the rescue, revealed that the mission was executed swiftly to prevent the kidnappers from moving Walton to a new location. However, the operation was not without controversy. Patel faced intense questioning from senators over allegations that he falsely claimed the Nigerian government had granted the SEAL Team Six clearance to use its airspace.
According to then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s memoir, the U.S. team only learned mid-flight that the necessary permissions had not been secured. Esper expressed concern about the risks posed by the unauthorized mission, including the possibility of the SEALs being shot down. “I was concerned that being packed in an aircraft burning holes in the sky for an extra hour or so would wear on the special operators, that it might affect their readiness somehow,” Esper wrote.
Esper also noted that some team members suspected Patel had fabricated the story about Nigerian approval. Patel, however, denied these allegations in his book, *Government Gangsters*, accusing unnamed individuals of undermining counterterrorism efforts in Africa and the Middle East to obstruct the president’s agenda. Ultimately, the State Department intervened to secure the required airspace clearance, allowing the mission to proceed successfully.
Despite the operation’s success, Patel’s confirmation as FBI director has faced significant opposition, with senators questioning his judgment and handling of the mission. It remains unclear whether his responses during the hearing have alleviated these concerns.
