Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State police spokesperson, has refused to disclose the prime suspect’s reasons for burning 74-year-old woman to death, despite arresting him recently.
Recall that in January, the Anambra State police command arrested four suspects, including a 21-year-old woman, for allegedly burning a 74-year-old wheelchair-bound woman to death in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the suspects, after committing the heinous act, procured a casket and were about to bury the victim’s charred remains when security operatives intervened.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, with police operatives recovering the victim’s burnt remains, her wheelchair, and the casket on Sunday.
During interrogation, the suspect Chinenye confessed that her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, who was then at large, and three others set the victim ablaze and arranged a casket to bury her before the police intervened.”
In the statement, Ikenga said that efforts are underway to apprehend the prime suspect, Ifeanyi Igwe, who ran away.
However, on 4th February, Ikenga announced the arrest of the prime suspect, Ifeanyi Igwe.
But the Anambra police public relations officer didn’t give out the suspect’s reasons for the heinous act.
In a statement, Ikenga noted that the prime suspect was apprehended and was being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a debrief.
He said: “The suspect: Obinna Anene ‘m’ aged 33yrs of Amene Village, Abagana, who was mentioned as the principal suspect in the case of burning and killing of a 74-year-old woman, Alice Anene, at Abagana on 27/01/2025, has been arrested.
“He is being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide SCID Section Awka for a debrief.”
When CrimeFacts News pressed further to know the suspect’s reasons for committing this crime, a response via text message from the Anambra PPRO on Wednesday only stated that the prime suspect, Ifeanyi Igwe was “a prospective tenant to the deceased.”
Mr Ikenga failed to respond to another SMS by CrimeFacts news, insisting on the reasons.
