UNIJOS professor of medicine Chris Piwuna elected as ASUU president

Chris Piwuna, a professor of medicine and a consultant psychiatrist, has been elected president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Emmanuel Osodeke, now his predecessor, confirmed the development to TheCable on Monday.

Piwuna is the immediate past national vice president of ASUU.

The former dean of student affairs at the University of Jos was declared the winner after a four-day election held from May 8 to 12.

The election was held during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo.

Piwuna defeated Adamu Babayo, a professor from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU).

Though ASUU has yet to make an official announcement, Osodeke said the union will likely give an official press release.

The professor of medicine will become the union’s 14th president.

Piwuna graduated from UNIJOS with a Medicine (MBBS) degree in 2000.

He obtained his Master’s degree at the University of Malta in 2013.

He is a West African College of Physicians fellow and a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association.

He is a consultant psychiatrist at the UNIJOS teaching hospital and a former head of the psychiatry unit.

Piwuna’s work is specialised in the quality of life in older adults, with several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
