Seven die in Sokoto canoe mishap

Seven people, including the paddler, have drowned after their canoe capsized in Sokoto state on Monday.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the victims were travelling from Gidan Hussaini to Sabon Garin Hussaini when the incident occurred.

Security operatives quickly responded to the scene, securing the area and restricting access to the riverside to manage the gathering of relatives.

Local rescue team was mobilised to retrieve the bodies, which were later handed over to the victims’ families for burial.

On November 30, a boat conveying over 200 people from Kogi state capsized along the Dambo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger.

Over twenty-two bodies were recovered from the river while many were declared missing.

Earlier in October, 90 bodies were recovered, while 31 people were rescued from a boat accident in Kaiama LGA in Kwara state.
