Imo: Teenage girl visually impaired by guardian rescued by human rights group

A group, “Stand For Humanity Foundation” has rescued 13-year-old Favour Nuhu from her guardian, Mrs. Joyce Onyinye (30), who allegedly caused the impairment of her right eye through maltreatment.

Founder of the group, Chidiebube Okeoma stated that the girl is now admitted at Imo State University Teaching Hospital for full medical care. Initial medical evaluation has confirmed she has lost sight in the injured eye.

Favour told police that her guardian caused the injury using a laptop cord. The Foundation acted after seeing a viral social media video where the girl, fearing further beatings, described abuse by her “madam.”

Following the video, some whistle-blowers led the group and police to the guardian’s Owerri estate, but the pair had left. They were later found at police headquarters. While the guardian admitted to beating Favour, she denied causing the eye damage.

Police issued a medical order, allowing the Foundation to enroll Favour in Imo State’s free healthcare scheme for vulnerable children. She was immediately referred and admitted to the hospital.

The guardian, granted bail as a nursing mother, remains available for questioning. Stand For Humanity Foundation condemned the abuse, stating, “If you can’t tolerate a child’s excesses, take them back to their parents. You have no right to batter any child.”

The group pledged to press legal charges against the guardian as a deterrent, vowing to continue fighting child abuse: “No child deserves to be dehumanized.”
