Over 300 displaced, 30 houses razed’ as gunmen attack Plateau communities

Gunmen have reportedly displaced more than 300 people and set ablaze at least 30 houses in Qua’an-Pan LGA of Plateau state.

The attacks, which occurred in late August across 10 communities in Doemak district, left many residents homeless as farmlands and property were destroyed on the eve of the harvest season.

The affected villages include Nteng, Doop, Zhep Morop, Gyeergu, Kelaghan, Loon, Kwakii and Gorom.

In a statement on Tuesday, Christopher Manship, executive chairman of Qua’an-Pan LGA, called for collective action against the violence.

“I urge our traditional rulers, religious leaders and development associations to join hands with us in condemning these attacks and working towards a permanent solution,” the statement reads.

He noted that security operatives have been deployed in the communities, with his administration “working tirelessly to restore peace and normalcy”.

Manship asked security agencies, including vigilante groups, to remain alert and united in restoring calm.

He also visited the affected villages, assuring displaced residents of his administration’s commitment to their safe return.

Cornelius Doeyok, Plateau commissioner for culture and tourism, commended Manship for rallying stakeholders to address the persistent attacks on the state.
