Arise TV news anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, murdered in robbery attack

The Nigerian media landscape was plunged into mourning on Monday, September 29, 2025, following the tragic and untimely death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a vibrant news anchor, reporter, and producer with Arise Television.

The 29-year-old journalist, affectionately known as Sommie, was killed during a violent armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has sent shockwaves through the news media community, the legal profession, and the nation at large.

According to preliminary reports, armed assailants breached the security of her home, leading to the fatal encounter. The FCT Police Command has confirmed that its operatives have launched a full-scale investigation to unravel the precise circumstances of the invasion and to apprehend those responsible.

In a sober and emotionally charged official statement released by the management and staff of the ARISE News Channel, the organization confirmed the devastating loss. The network described Maduagwu as not merely a colleague, but a “beloved” and “cherished member” of their family, whose passing has left a profound void.

“Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident in her residence in Katampe area of Abuja that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

The tribute painted a picture of a multifaceted and deeply talented individual. Beyond her familiar presence on the television screen, where she was recognized as a “vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” Maduagwu was also a qualified lawyer.

The management extended its “deepest condolences” to her parents, siblings, extended family, and wide circle of friends, acknowledging the unimaginable pain of their loss. In a poignant reflection on her legacy, the statement noted, “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.”

The statement concluded with a firm call to action: “We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
